This novel illuminates the plight of a generation of men and women in post-war Vietnam. It explores issues of family and gender, and charts Vietnam's effort to redefine its relationship to its past and future. Ho Anh Thai brings into view the struggle of women who survived their service during the war years. Like male veterans in America and Vietnam, they returned to a society which they had defended, but which in many ways had no place for them. By confronting these issues, Ho Anh Thai has contributed to the debate in Vietnam over the rights of unmarried women with children. Through the lens of this particular time and place, The Women on the Island probes the timeless question of how we find ways to live in harmony with the tangled and contradictory compulsions of our own souls.

Hồ Anh Thái sinh ngày 18 tháng 10 năm 1960 tại Hà Nội. Nguyên quán ông ở Nghệ An. Ông theo học bậc Đại học ngành Quan hệ Quốc tế. Sau khi tốt nghiệp, ông tham gia viết báo và làm công tác ngoại giao ở nhiều quốc gia Âu - Mỹ, đặc biệt là Ấn Độ. Giỏi ngoại ngữ, ông là một nhà ngoại giao, nhà nghiên cứu Ấn Độ, giảng viên. Hiện nay ông là Tiến sĩ ngành Văn hóa phương Đông, công tác tại Bộ Ngoại giao Việt Nam.

Sự nghiệp văn chương

Khởi nghiệp viết văn, Hồ Anh Thái nổi lên như một hiện tượng, với giọng văn trẻ trung, tươi mới, về đời sống thanh niên, sinh viên với những cuộc phiêu lưu, những khát khao khám phá đời sống. Những tác phẩm tiêu biểu của ông thời gian này được biết đến là "Trong sương hồng hiện ra", "Người và xe chạy dưới ánh trăng", "Người đàn bà trên đảo", truyện ngắn "Món tái dê", "Chàng trai ở bến đợi xe"...
Đầu những năm 1990, sau nhiều năm nghiên cứu và làm việc ở nhiều nước Âu - Mỹ, đặc biệt là 6 năm tại Ấn Độ, ông trở lại trên văn đàn với những chùm truyện ngắn độc đáo, hài hước mà thâm trầm về Ấn Độ: "Người đứng một chân", "Người Ấn", 'Tiếng thở dài qua rừng kim tước", "Cuộc đổi chác"...
Từ năm 2000, ông có những tác phẩm được đánh giá cao và gây tranh luận như "Cõi người rung chuông tận thế", "Tự sự 265 ngày", "Bốn lối vào nhà cười", "Mười lẻ một đêm"... Cũng trong năm 2000, ông được bầu là chủ tịch Hội Nhà văn Hà Nội.
Năm 2007, ông trở lại với đề tài Ấn Độ bằng tiểu thuyết "Đức Phật, nàng Savitri và tôi". Đây là cuốn tiểu thuyết đầu tiên của văn học Việt Nam tái hiện chân dung Đức Phật thông qua một cốt truyện hấp dẫn, một văn phong giản dị, một đa cấu trúc có hiệu quả mở rộng chiều kích không gian và thời gian. Sách của ông thường được phát hành với số lượng lớn và đã được dịch ra hơn 10 ngôn ngữ, trong đó có tiếng Anh, tiếng Pháp, tiếng Thụy Điển...

I wanted to like L'île aux femmes, I really did, but for a novel that's supposed to be about women it manages precisely NOT to be about women. There's no explanation as to why on earth the government decided to throw a bunch of women onto an island to cultivate/harvest the farm or whatever (supposedly they're supposed to populate the island with families??? But the men at the military base are too young?? Who knows). There's one strong scene where the women argue the pointlessness of remaining virgins and the unfair status of illegitimate children, but that's it. So yes, Thai touches a little on patriarchal oppression expecting women to remain virgins before marriage and then chaste once married, but he doesn't accomplish anything in the book since the main characters are the men. And I was a little peeved at his arrogance in the interview, where he says "avec un sourire de modestie: J'aime à croire que mon livre a été pour quelque chose dans ces réforms." Uh, believing that his book contributed to the reforming of the family laws passed in 1959 is in no way modest.

Je crois que le livre est si mal noté car le titre ne lui va pas très bien. Vu sa mauvaise moyenne je m'attendais à une lecture déplaisante, mais j’ai été agréablement surprise. Il est vrai qu'on se demande si tous les chapitres sont vraiment rangés dans le bon ordre, on dirait que non mais ça ne m'a pas dérangé outre mesure. Dans la préface de l'édition française l'auteur explique la genèse de ce livre. Apparemment les lois archaïques vietnamiennes concernant les naissances hors mariages et la déchéance des mères ne lui convenaient pas. Un peu après la parution de son livre les lois ont été mise à jour pour être dans l'air du temps.


Très forte ambiance vietnamienne et j'ai appris l'existence d'élevages de tortues marines, mais maintenant il ne reste plus qu'une seule exploitation dans le monde. J'ai bien aimé cette histoire sur une île. Ca me donne envie de lire tous les livres vietnamiens de cette maison d’édition, après tout c'est déjà mon cinquième !

Người Đàn Bà Trên Đảo by Hồ Anh Thái

Nói thế nào nhỉ, quyển này không hẳn quá hay (về cốt truyện), nhưng thu hút mình về câu chữ. Có rất nhiều ẩn ý đằng sau mỗi lời thoại, mỗi nhân vật.
Bàn về ý nghĩa vận động cho điều luật bảo vệ quyền của những đứa con ngoài giá thú có lẽ là điều quá vĩ mô với mình. Cái làm mình gây ấn tượng là cách xây dựng nhân vật với cá tính tuyệt đối, giống như trong suối nguồn, điều mà ngoài thực tế khó mà có được. Sự tuyệt đối này làm mình có những hình mẫu riêng, về những cá tính riêng, như Tường buông thả, như Hòa chuẩn mực, như Vân hướng thiện, như ông Chỉnh bình tĩnh.
Đáng để đọc. Sẽ tìm thêm các cuốn khác cùng tác giả.

A very special, engaging novel! I couldn’t put it down and had to spend the whole night to finish in one read. I’ve never ever read anything like this book before and could never expect the author at such a young age could write such an outstanding book in his generation.

In her novels, Duong Thu Huong makes the case for turn of Vietnamese fiction on the world stage, no small feat from a country where the government is still in name Marxist and in practice not noted for tolerance. It's not impossible; witness the consistent miracle of Iranian cinema. Ho Anh Thai's "The Women on the Island" makes a counter-argument. The set-up is intriguing: an island of women, a microcosm in a way of the generation that lost so many men to war. But Thai, although a noted writer of fiction, is also an employee of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Yes, corruption exist in the novel, but it is redeemed, as is the system, by the implausibly virtuous Hoa, deprived of his post by bureaucratic machinations but vindicated by the Party. There is an uneasy Victorianism about the artist Tuong, who flees the dissolute city for the island where he indulges in the horror of sketching some of the women nude. The book is redeemed by its use of lore from the wars of independence and by one scene where a woman delivers a passionate speech about her loss when the man she hoped to marry died in what the Vietnamese call the American war. In that one speech, as that woman tries to stare down the manipulative functionary leading a witch hunt for the father of a child to be born, the novel comes alive: "He's dead with all the rest, and who did I keep myself for? What do I need with virginity, when all it does is bring me loneliness? The collective can help me strengthen my willpower, it can console me a bit. But the collective can't bring me private happiness." It is a startling moment, made all the more so, because it stands alone itself in the middle of a novel that drifts between a mild criticism of power and a mild affirmation of it.
