Στο βιβλίο αυτό παρατίθενται δύο δοκίμια που ανήκουν στο ίδιο θεματικό πλαίσιο «τέχνη και φασισμός». Το πρώτο αναφέρεται στη Λένι Ρίφενσταλ και το άλλο στο κινηματογραφικό έργο του Γιούργκεν Ζύμπερμπεργκ. Το ενδιαφέρον που παρουσιάζουν για το σημερινό αναγνώστη έχει να κάνει με την ανίχνευση των αιτίων μιας διαφαινόμενης κατά τη δεκαετία του 1970 απενοχοποίησης κάποιων φωτογενών μορφών του φασισμού, των οποίων τα αίτια η Σόντακ εντοπίζει «στις νέες ευκαιρίες που δόθηκαν στην ιδέα του ωραίου» μέσα στην κοινωνία του θεάματος και του life style.

About the author

Susan Sontag was born in New York City on January 16, 1933, grew up in Tucson, Arizona, and attended high school in Los Angeles. She received her B.A. from the College of the University of Chicago and did graduate work in philosophy, literature, and theology at Harvard University and Saint Anne’s College, Oxford.

Her books include four novels, The Benefactor, Death Kit, The Volcano Lover, and In America; a collection of short stories, I, etcetera; several plays, including Alice in Bed and Lady from the Sea; and nine works of nonfiction, starting with Against Interpretation and including On Photography, Illness as Metaphor, Where the Stress Falls, Regarding the Pain of Others, and At the Same Time. In 1982, Farrar, Straus & Giroux published A Susan Sontag Reader.

Ms. Sontag wrote and directed four feature-length films: Duet for Cannibals (1969) and Brother Carl (1971), both in Sweden; Promised Lands (1974), made in Israel during the war of October 1973; and Unguided Tour (1983), from her short story of the same name, made in Italy. Her play Alice in Bed has had productions in the United States, Mexico, Germany, and Holland. Another play, Lady from the Sea, has been produced in Italy, France, Switzerland, Germany, and Korea.

Ms. Sontag also directed plays in the United States and Europe, including a staging of Beckett's Waiting for Godot in the summer of 1993 in besieged Sarajevo, where she spent much of the time between early 1993 and 1996 and was made an honorary citizen of the city.

A human rights activist for more than two decades, Ms. Sontag served from 1987 to 1989 as president of the American Center of PEN, the international writers’ organization dedicated to freedom of expression and the advancement of literature, from which platform she led a number of campaigns on behalf of persecuted and imprisoned writers.

Her stories and essays appeared in newspapers, magazines, and literary publications all over the world, including The New York Times, The New Yorker, The New York Review of Books, The Times Literary Supplement, Art in America, Antaeus, Parnassus, The Threepenny Review, The Nation, and Granta. Her books have been translated into thirty-two languages.

Among Ms. Sontag's many honors are the 2003 Peace Prize of the German Book Trade, the 2003 Prince of Asturias Prize, the 2001 Jerusalem Prize, the National Book Award for In America (2000), and the National Book Critics Circle Award for On Photography (1978). In 1992 she received the Malaparte Prize in Italy, and in 1999 she was named a Commandeur de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French government (she had been named an Officier in the same order in 1984). Between 1990 and 1995 she was a MacArthur Fellow.

Ms. Sontag died in New York City on December 28, 2004.

Αποσαρθρώνοντας τη «γοητεία» του Φασισμού, before it was cool.

Πρώτη επαφή με το έργο της γνωστής δοκιμιογράφου Σούζαν Σοντανγκ και έχω να πω πως εξεπλάγη θετικά. Δηλαδή, είχα διαβάσει κάποια πράγματα απο την Σόνταγκ, αλλά οι συγκεκριμένες μελέτες ήταν αρκετά ενημερωτικές και ενδιαφέρουσες ως προς το θέμα τους.

Το θέμα τους: η Σόνταγκ γράφει σχετικά με τις μεταπολεμικές καλλιτεχνικές προσπάθειες αποστασιοποίησης του Ναζισμού απο τη Ναζιστική τέχνη με αφορμή ένα άλμπουμ φωτογραφιών και μια ταινία (η τετραλογία ταινιών) που κυκλοφόρησαν στη δεκαετία του 1970. Και τα δύο μέσα, είχαν ως θέμα είτε την σύνδεση των δημιουργών του με το Ναζιστικό καθεστώς, είτε τις επιρροές που είχε αυτό στη μετέπειτα ζωή τους. Με αφορμή λοιπόν τις κυκλοφορίες του βιβλίου και της ταινίας, η Σόνταγκ αναδεικνύει τις απόπειρες να γίνει μια απεμπλοκή της Τέχνης απο το Ναζιστικό καθεστώς που την παρήγαγε.

Δηλαδή το άτομο πίσω απο το άλμπουμ φωτογραφιών, είναι η Λένι Ρίφενσταλ που γύριζε ντοκιμαντέρ για λογαριασμό του 3ου Ραίχ με στόχο να προβάλει το «μεγαλείο» του καθεστώτος. Η ίδια έρχεται για να αναβαπτιστεί μεταπολεμικά ως μια σκηνοθέτης μέσα απο προσπάθειες κριτικής της ως προς το έργο της αυτό καθ’αυτό και όχι ως προς τη πολιτική φύση του. Κοινώς, η Σόνταγκ μας λέει πως προσπαθεί να γίνει ένα πλυντήριο με στόχο να δούμε την πιο «γοητευτική» πλευρά του Ναζισμού, αυτή που επικεντρώνεται στο ωραίο, στο καλαίσθητο, την τέχνη που συνδέεται άμεσα η έμμεσα με τις θηριωδίες των Ναζί. Για να δώσω ένα δικό μας παράδειγμα, κάτι αντίστοιχο βλέπαμε με τα πρωινάδικα και τις προβολές lifestyle των χρυσαυγιτών.

Η Σόνταγκ φυσικά δεν μασάει και αποσαρθρώνει πολύ ωραία όλες αυτές τις προσπάθειες. Αν και το δοκίμιο που αναφέρεται στη ταινία του Ζυμπερμεργκ με έχασε λίγο, κατάλαβα τι ήθελε να πει η συγγραφέας και αυτά τα έλεγε πριν 40-50 χρόνια.
Οποιαδήποτε ομοιότητα με το 2021 είναι πέρα για πέρα καθόλου συμπτωματική.

Very thought-provoking piece on Leni Riefenstahl’s work and Nazi influence, or more broadly about the aesthetics of fascism. Particularly provocative points on the eroticism of fascism, how Nazi art can become satirical through over-familiarity and the comparison between the staging of war and sexuality. I think class could be given more consideration when Sontag discusses these points but it’s a good beginning for the analysis; when she does consider the influence of socioeconomic factors I think it asks some interesting questions, e.g.

‘The rituals of domination and enslavement being more and more practiced, the art that is more and more devoted to rendering their themes, are perhaps only a logical extension of an affluent society’s tendency to turn every part of people’s lives into a taste, a choice; to invite them to regard their very lives as a (life) style.’

Susan Sontag is a sharp, intelligent and unique writer and thinker. In her article on the ambiguous German filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl she builds an interesting and strong argument for a reassesment of Riefenstahl's cinema. Furthermore, Sontag makes an exceptional connection between fascism and sexuality that has still relevance until today.

The first part of this article was more interesting in my opinion. The second part, though correct in it's general viewpoint, was stretched too far beyond the potential of the context. A bit outdated in my opinion. A good read nevertheless

(3.5 rounded up to 4). The first part was well thought out and had excellent research to back it up. It left the reader to understand exactly how fascism can be seen as a theatrical performance and how Riefenstahl was the master architect of performing fascism on screen. What Sontag describes as the longing for such ideals was also really interesting, as she gets into what is beyond the surface of fascism in art - going beyond "brutishness and terror" and towards something that aims to capture "the ideal of life as art, the cult of beauty, the fetishism of courage, the dissolution of alienation in ecstatic feelings of community; the repudiation of the intellect; the family of man" (6).
The second part was potentially more interesting, but lacked the same in-depth discussion points as the first part. I was very much interested in it, but the discussions felt a bit lazy and almost like the beginnings of further research that she wanted to just include. Nevertheless some really interesting connections between sexuality as a theatrical performance as much as fascism is. Would love to read more about this.

Ένα εξαιρετικό ανάγνωσμα, στο οποίο όμως προσάπτω την αναντιστοιχία του τίτλου με το περιεχόμενο.

Με βάση το πρώτο δοκίμιο, η έκδοση θα μπορούσε να τιτλοφορείται «Η αισθητική (και ηθική;) του φασισμού», εφόσον η παράθεση και εν μέρει εξήγηση της γοητείας του καταλαμβάνει πολύ λιγότερες σελίδες αναλογικά, σε ένα εν είδει addendum αφιερωμένο στη σεξουαλική λειτουργία της ναζιστικής εικονογραφίας.

Το δεύτερο δοκίμιο είναι μία οπτική πάνω στην ταινία του Syberberg, «Χίτλερ, μια ιστορία από τη Γερμανία» όπου αναλύονται κυρίως (αλλά όχι μόνο) η καλλιτεχνική προσέγγιση και γενικότερη αντίληψη του σκηνοθέτη, συχνά με όρους καλλιτεχνικών ρευμάτων, με γενναία δόση διακειμενικότητας με αναφορές στους Μαν, Βάγκνερ, Μπρεχτ κ.ά. Πρόκειται για ένα γοητευτικότατο δοκίμιο, στο οποίο όμως προσωπικά δεν είδα να γίνεται πουθενά λόγος για τη γοητεία του φασισμού καθεαυτή.

Στο πρώτο σκέλος έχουμε μια ανάλυση των ταινιών της Ρίφενσταλ, που είναι αρκετά ενδιαφέρούσα γιατί πράγματι παραπέμπει στον τίτλο και σε βοηθά σαν αναγνώστης να κατανοήσεις τους τρόπους προπαγάνδας που χρησιμοποίησε η ναζιστικ�� Γερμανία μέσω της παραγωγής ταινιών. Το δεύτερο σκέλος όμως, που αναλύεται η ταινία του Ζύμπερμπεργκ, για κάποιο λόγο μου φάνηκε εντελώς αδιάφορο και κάπως μακριά από το θέμα "συζήτησης" του βιβλίου.

I added this to my want-to-read because I wanted to read more Sontag and it sounded interesting, and then I forgot until today, when I realized my want-to-read was out of control and I needed to knock some things out, so I sorted by page count and started at the short end. 

This is an article with two parts: an examination of the rehabilitation of Leni Riefenstahl's image, post WWII, and the sexualization of Nazi uniforms. Both aspects are about the declawing of fascism and the urge to do so. 

I hadn't realized Riefenstahl had a successful career after the defeat of Nazi Germany, and learning that she did, and that she successfully detached her image from "wildly successful Nazi propagandist" made me feel sick. That feminists claimed her was also nauseating. Yes, she was successful, powerful director. She also contributed to the deaths of millions of women.

It's a short enough read that I'm tempted to just tell people to go read it, rather than trying to figure out what I, personally, think about it, but Sontag is so smart that she deserves some thought on my end. This is the sort of article that I wish I had been assigned while I was in school.

The second section is shorter, and it's about the up-surge in SS uniforms as part of sadomasochistic kink. I would be interested in seeing an update to this; I wouldn't pretend towards any sort of expertise in this field, but I know that Nazi styled uniforms are present in popular media like Star Wars and I don't think that can be attributed to kink. I think, the further we've gotten from World War II, the more aestheticized the Nazis have become.

It was a very interesting read, and one I'll be thinking about for a while longer.
