Who could have thought that classic literature could be so good?
I found this book at my grandmother's garage, hidden among boxes of old, for decades untouched stuff. I had seen dance performance "Anna Karenina" few weeks before finding it, and I wasn't very sure if I understood everything correctly in it. So I decided to read the book to clear some things up. But I really couldn't have guessed that this book would touch me emotionally so hard. I loved it, although I am more a fan of fiction genr

I couldn't stand for a day not to read Anna Karenina - this book really engages the reader and feels like written today, not a century ago. And now I've got a whole week of Christmas Holiday left until I get home and may start reading the other part of the story!

I can't nothing but wonder why I haven't read this book before. From the first pages I could trust Tolstoi and felt this became my favorite book.

My first book of 2018 :) I can’t imagine how glad I was that it was a book written by Tolstoj. It was a gift from my dear husband ❤️
“Ana Karenina” really impressed me with content, the richness of words, the description of every detail, the analysis of the situation. And really, my all feelings went not to Ana’s story, but the story of Levin love :) Exactly Levin was very impressed me as a man, with his male character and so sensational character.

A clear masterpiece of world literature, in my humble opinion. I believe Tolstoy took realism to its height with this novel. I also feel that contemporary novels are more or less continuing the literary realism started in 19th century and if Tolstoy would have lived today he would have been an equally famous writer.

In terms of the novel's characters, I empathized mostly with Levin and I was really happy to see him happy at the end of first volume. Regarding the drama of Anna and Alexei Karenin,

This is the first part, and although wonderfully written to reflect both the heroine's personal drama and the portrait of nineteenth century Russian upper classes everyday lives it doesn't reach the depths of psychological plot seen in War and Peace. I searched for the FR second hand version for 7 years and finally, after such a long time, i finally got the books for 2 euros.

Ergh what to say... When reading classics i always ask myself what makes a certain book a classic. For some it is the writing style, other books are famous for depicting the sentiment of an era, and others just have a great story. According to some this book tells more than a love story, but until now i have not gotten anything out of it except a love story. Well, the b

I read this book a while ago and honestly way too young to understand a story like this (I was 18). I remember liking parts of not but not really "getting" it.

Worth mentioning this is an opus dei approved book. One of about 6 books they always recommend and insist you read. When they approve of a book and try to make you read it you've got to wonder. Some sort of subliminal message in there that probably is along the lines of -don't lead a life of sin, eventually you will regret it and die a cr

Parts of this book were wonderful. The characters are great. However, I got really bored with all of the Russian politics. I kept starting and stopping this book, and in fact put it down for months, because I lost interest every time the political and philosophical issues of the day were the topic of a chapter. Perhaps I need to know more Russian history to truly appreciate this one...

Anna and Vronsky: passion, crime, all-consuming love, yadda yadda yadda...
Maybe I'm too young to understand. (This book will definitely get a re-read some day.)

Personally, I found the quiet and humble tale of Konstantin Levin much more enticing at this particular point in my life.
I had never read as insightful description of love for work as was described through the thoughts of Levin. If I closed my eyes I could just about see the golden grain fields and feel the soft touch of summer wind o

Having just finished part one, I enjoyed the majority of Anna Karenina. I wasn’t sure exactly what to expect as I have only read a couple of Tolstoy’s works before but was surprised by its modern style and how easy it was to read.
Some scenes in the book will forever be in my memory. Namely the steeplechase, horse race, day at the races. Also the farm work, hot summers day, scything of hay. Tolstoy manages to observe and describe these and other scenes to perfection, creating mental images that r

I'm no English major, so this book even if it is a classic wasn't to my liking. It is an interesting study of jealousy and morality but from a very outdated point of view, since it's been written so long ago, and in my opinion hasn't aged well.
I tried to just look past the blatant misogyny, and past the categorization of women into "young and beautiful maidens" and "old, ugly matrons" whom the men can't be blamed to cheat on. I failed miserably.
It's been my first XIX century book in a long ti

Comparing to the movie the book is not so confusing. In this case is true that books are better than movies. I really like the way how the book is written. Sometimes it was hard to read so I had to read some pages twice but in general I liked it. I love the story. I love how there is love described in many ways. Simply it's a classic that everybody must read. ...more

Do not read if you are in any way sad. Tolstoy is so good a writer he makes killing yourself seem like a really good idea. Seriously, be careful when you read this. I had to be talked down.

Recommends it for: Anyone looking for a challenge.
So much has been said about this book, so many reviews, opinions, so I'm just gonna give a brief outline of my response and get out of here. Okay?

I first encountered this book in high school when a teacher, who I respected greatly, enthused about the scene in the book where apparently count Vronsky kisses Anna's open palm in public, creating a thrilling scandal. This image really stuck in my mind, and I looked forward to encountering it in the novel. Well, it's not in the novel! Nearest I can g
