Sic!

This book was not the best thing in the world, BUT I think it will definitely hold a special place in my heart simply because it's the first time I've read a Russian book in one go and actually truly enjoyed myself without constantly being pulled out by sloppy language and weak plot.

Now this is most definitely not a stab against Russian books as a whole, because I am sure that there are many masterpieces out there, and that English has its fair share of written trash. However, I've been trying to find something light, romantic, funny AS WELL AS well written for soooo loooong, that despite my issues with some of the plot, this was such a welcome breath of fresh air and indulgence in a wonderfully new world all within the Russian imagination.

The worldbuilding was fascinating (possible one of my favourite worlds - even if I perhaps wanted to see more of it). The story felt like an extremely slow start for a romance, or I suppose any book in general for me, but as a romance in particular because it was only at 50%! yes that is FIFTY PERCENT! of the book do we get any sort of progression between the two main characters. I do understand the importance of building up the main character by herself before we are presented with the conflict that she'll face, in order to understand the reasoning of her actions. But I have to say that it did feel FAAR to drawn out. The conflict between the two main characters also kept constantly going in circles through what I can only explain as a very distinct lack of communication of any kind.

Despite all this, I felt like the sole reason I kept on reading those first many chapters was because of the small glimpses of the so called "awful" romantic interest, as well as the truly beautiful writing, with all its wit, spunky comments and constant sexual tension.

I can't say that I loved the main character, but I loved that she GREW. Perhaps not so much in this book, but definitely in the next.

It's probably silly to write a review in English of a book that has not been translated into English, but I felt like I needed to get the words out since it left an impression on me, and I am by far much more eloquent in English than I am in Russian. For now.

If by some odd chance you do speak the language, I recommend the read - it may not be the most magnificent read in the world, but it is fantastically fresh and incredibly tender.

As a side note: a lot of my feelings about the book are very much tied to how much more I loved the second one, and so, if after having read both my review and the first book, you've come back to rant about the lack of anything remotely romantic - read on! This is the sort of duology that, in my opinion, should have just been one book.

End of rant.
