Dark Protector #1

Dark Protector

Rate this book
From the moment I saw her through the window of her flower shop, something other than darkness took root inside me. Charlie shone like a beacon in a world that had long since lost any light. But she was never meant for me, a man that killed without remorse and collected bounties drenched in blood.
I thought staying away would keep her safe, would shield her from me. I was wrong. Danger followed in my wake like death at a slaughter house. I protected her from the threats that circled like black buzzards, kept her safe with kill after kill.
But everything comes with a price, especially second chances for a man like me.
Killing for her was easy. It was living for her that turned out to be the hard part.

Author's Note: This is a full-length romance novel. It's not a super-dark read, no trigger warning. Explicit violence and hot sex included. HEA, no cheating.

4 Stars!!

Celia Aaron’s newest release is purely and simply AWESOME. I loved it! I was immersed in this story from the very first page and I couldn’t put it down for one minute. I’ve read several books by this author and this one is, in my opinion, her best work to date. 'Dark Protector' is gripping, entertaining, filled with suspense, action and steam and also some darkness and violence to keep you intrigued. If you like dark, mobster stories, with alpha anti-heroes and strong, endearing heroines, then you have to give this one a try.

“A woman like her wasn’t meant for a man like me.”

Conrad ‘Con’ Mercer is a dangerous man. He’s a man who kills without remorse. He has been a killer for more than ten years, working as a hitman for the bosses in Philly, doing his job flawlessly and making a name for himself. Conrad has been fascinated with Charlie from the moment he saw her through the window in her flower shop. He knows he’s not the man for a woman like Charlie, but he wants her. Seeing her every day or every night when he parks his car close to her shop is the only thing that calms him, the only thing that brings him peace.

“He moved with aggression, every part of him dripping calculated vengeance. Even his predatory walk screamed danger. Yet he was eerily beautiful for a man who killed without remorse.

Charlie is aware of the man who’s watching her. For some reason she doesn’t feel threatened. The strange thing is, even if she doesn’t know HIM, she somehow feels protected.

Conrad has never planned and never hoped to meet Charlie face to face, but when Charlie finds herself in danger because of him, he’s ready to do anything to protect her. He will do anything for her to be safe, because protecting her has become his reason to be. But the only way he can insure her safety is by being with her non-stop until the danger passes.

“Keeping her close wasn’t an option anymore. It was a necessity. (…) She made an addict out of me. It didn’t make sense, but I couldn’t change it. Maybe I didn’t want to.”

Charlie is not very thrilled her life was turned upside down and now she will have to stay close to Con. While she’s not afraid of him, she desperately wants to get her life back. As time passes, their situation gets complicated when they find out the enemy wants both of them dead.

In order to survive, they have to learn how to trust each other. What happens when the attraction between them becomes too much to ignore? Will Con be able to protect Charlie against the enemy? Will he be able to give her up when the time comes?

“She was a reward I didn’t earn, a gift I didn’t deserve. But like the selfish bastard I was, I would take everything she offered.”

'Dark Protector' is dark, raw, fast-paced and I enjoyed every minute of it. I liked the premise and I found the story-line to be very addictive. Celia Aaron perfectly blends the romance, action and suspense, delivering an entertaining gem that had me hooked from the start. The plot is well-developed with some interesting turns and twists as the story progresses.

Both Con and Charlie are well-portrayed characters and perfect for each other in a very intriguing way. Con is a hardened, calculated killer I really liked reading about. His background is well done and I loved how protective he is towards Charlie. He is sweet, sexy, thoughtful and considerate and in some way, I loved his staking ways. If Charlie seems to be just your usual sweet and innocent heroine at the beginning of the story, as it unfolds, she proves that she’s so much more. She’s strong, a fighter, a bada$$ heroine, with a snarky attitude and a past she wants to forget.

The author did a really great job regarding the chemistry between the two main characters. It is purely and simply fantastic, the sexual tension between them is off the charts at times and the sex scenes are really hot.

“Her nails were heaven on my skin, her tongue paradise on my lips. I kissed her rough, too rough, but every primal instinct that lived inside me demanded that I give her everything I had.”

There’s some insta…something between Con and Charlie but, much to my surprise, I wasn’t bothered by it at all. However, I would have preferred their romantic relationship to be more developed.

As for the supporting characters, I loved Nate and I really hope he will get his own book. He almost stole the show for me!

All in all, 'Dark Protector' is a fantastic read, filled with action, suspense, violence, romance and steam, a great plot and engaging characters!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️! Dark Protector (stand-alone). Hit man’s obsession with florist puts a target on their backs!

“The mottled flesh told the story of blood, pain, and a life lived in service to death. I couldn’t imagine anything different. These hands were violence and nothing more. Even so, I imagined how Charlie’s skin would feel under my rough touch.”

Dark Protector (stand-alone) opens up to florist Charlie being watched by hit man Conrad Mercer, Con. More on why to unfold with story.

When violence erupts and Con’s past catches up with him, Charlie inadvertently gets pulled in and they find themselves on the run.

Under the spell of their intense attraction Charlie must decide who to trust while Con feels powerless to protect.

Five words to describe Conrad Mercer, Con: Complex, protective, flawed, in-control and ruthless.

Five words to describe Charlie: Private, lonely, secretive, loyal and resilient.

Dark Protector, told from dual POVs, is about two lonely souls, who gave up on ever having love, finding it at the most inopportune time while fighting for their lives. Danger, suspense, violence, secrets and blackmail mars their journey sparked by Con’s obsession with Charlie and spiced with lust, sex and confessions. It ends perfectly with surprises in several short epilogues.

I've been on a dark mafia romance kick lately and 'Dark Protector' was just what I was craving. It was violent, dark and had an air of danger about it. It kept me on the edge of my seat, even as I felt confident that things would work out the way I wanted in the end. After all, doesn't it almost always work out?

Charlie has managed to catch the attention of a dangerous man. The owner of a small flower shop, she's noticed the car that frequently parks out front. What she doesn't know is that she has become the obsession of the man sitting inside the car.

Conrad Mercer is a hired gun, trained to kill from a young age. His life is filled with violence and death. Then one day, he sees Charlie through the window of her flower shop. He is immediately taken with the beautiful, young shop owner. She becomes the only source of light in his life. Each day, he parks outside her shop and watches her through the windows. He fantasizes about what could never be, knowing that his mere interest in her puts her life in danger.

When he is followed one day, he is forced to expose himself and kill the threat. Charlie sees the gunfight that plays out on the street in front of her shop. Her suspicions about the danger of the man that frequently parks in front of her shop are confirmed. Strangely, she doesn't feel threatened by him though. In fact, she feels comforted and protected by his presence.

However, Charlie isn't the only person that has noticed Conrad parked outside of her shop on a regular basis. Conrad has enemies watching as well. Assuming that Charlie is his girlfriend, they kidnap her to use against him.

Of course, Conrad immediately jumps into action to save the object of his obsession. This is where the story really takes off. One thing leads to another and the pair are forced to go on the run.

From start to finish, this story held my attention. It was over-the-top and unbelievable at times, but I enjoyed every damn minute. Who doesn't love an anti-hero that seems to be made of Teflon?

Conrad's best friend, Nate, was also a great addition to this story. He was the polar opposite of Conrad, light-hearted and humorous in contrast to Conrad's stern and stoic demeanor. He kind of reminded me of T. M. Frazier's "Preppy" in many ways. Nonetheless, he was a wonderful character and brought a lot to this story. (I hear he has his own book out now, which I'll definitely be reading ASAP.

Overall, this was a great book. It is a standalone and a pretty quick read. If you like mafia romances, this one is a good choice. It is also available as a Kindle Unlimited selection, if you're a member.

Reading a string of books that I liked, but were “just okay” left me on the verge of a major reading slump. With this being my first book by this author, I was nervous going into it. Would this just be one more book that sent me spiraling even further? I am ecstatic to report that I was worried for naught! Thank you, Celia Aaron for pulling me off the edge! Gripping, suspenseful, and action packed, Dark Protector was just what I needed!

Conrad “Con” Mercer spent most of his life as little more than a trained killing machine. Numb, lethal, and loyal to the almighty dollar, he took men’s lives without batting an eye. The organ inside his chest’s only function was to keep him alive. Love wasn’t a word he really understood until he laid eyes on Charlie.

Charlie, a florist with a devastating past, had been coasting through life without really living. When she notices the mysterious man watching her from outside her shop window, she quickly goes from feeling frightened and alarmed to curious and protected. She knows she should probably be freaking out that this guy is basically stalking her, but she’s not. If anything, she wishes he would come in and introduce himself. Maybe then she would get to finally see the face that is always hidden by the shadows. Charlie eventually gets her chance, but not exactly the way she was hoping for.

Hanging out around Charlie turns out to be bad idea when the wrong men take notice. Conrad and Charlie’s worlds collide in a way neither wanted, but after one bloody night, there is no going back. Conrad has followed orders his entire life. He pledges allegiance to the highest bidder. What happens when the man with the money wants Charlie dead? Will he turn his back on his entire way of life to save a woman he has never even spoken to?

I loved this book so much that I don’t even think I can do it justice with my review. The writing is impeccable. Celia Aaron has a true way with words. The dialogue and banter between the characters is some of the best that I have ever read. The story is exciting and entertaining with nonstop action and suspense from start to finish.

However, my favorite thing about this book had to be the characters. They were flawed, complex, and totally endearing. I didn’t want to say good bye to them, so I was very appreciative of the epilogues the author included at the end of the story. Charlie, Conrad, and Nate (more about him later) are phenomenal characters that I think everyone should get the chance to meet.

 photo PicsArt_02-27-04.39.31_zpszhqeako9.png

Charlie may have found herself in a terrifying situation, but she didn’t take anything lying down. Far from a damsel in distress, she was always thinking about her next move and ready to defend herself if necessary. Her awful past relationship resulted in only one good thing….turning Charlie into a survivor. She can hunt, fish, and make a shiv from a toilet brush! How could Conrad help falling in love with her? Strong, sassy, and a good shot, Charlie proved over and over again that she was one hell of a woman!

Hitman or not, Conrad Mercer is a badass force to be reckoned with that I fell in love with from the very first chapter! The man is ruthless, hot, protective, and according to Charlie, has a tongue of legend! Those that aren’t fans of push and pull will love this one. Conrad never wavers when it comes to Charlie. Once he falls for her, he never get scared and runs away. It makes sense when you think about it, because nothing intimidates him. Did I mention he is a total badass? I loved the way he was willing to lay down his life for Charlie without a moment’s hesitation. His life meant nothing without her in it.

My review wouldn’t be complete without talking about the man that completely stole my heart, Nate. Nate is Con’s friend and devoted side kick possessing the uncanny ability to lighten any dark moment with just a few choice words. His quick wit and light hearted attitude put a smile on my face every time he entered the scene. Loyal, sweet, and absolutely hilarious, Nate is one of the most amazing secondary characters I have ever encountered! In other words, back off ladies! He’s mine! If the author doesn’t give him his own book, it will be a tragedy of epic proportions. I will beg if need be. I’m not too proud. I need more Nate in my life!

If I love this book so much, why didn’t I give it a full five stars? One word. Instalove. The good news is that it didn’t interfere with my enjoyment as much as it usually would. To be honest, the story was so awesome I almost forgave it completely.

Overall, Dark Protector is a fantastic story that is perfectly paced, captivating, and hot! I enjoyed it so much I will be reading everything this author has ever written or will write in the future. If you are a fan of romantic suspense or just romance in general, then I recommend this one to you!

*P.S. This would make a great movie. Just sayin.*

I really enjoyed this one. It wasn't as dark as I was anticipating, but that was OK because the story pulled me in and kept me interested. It was well written and had a nice steady pace. Some action and violence. Some smokin' sex scenes as well.

Con was the type of hero, well anti-hero, that I really love. He was a man that did very bad things, but his heart turned to complete mush for his angel Charlie. Charlie was a strong heroine who had suffered many tragedies and came out the other side stronger. She was the perfect woman for Conrad. There weren't a whole lot of secondary characters that take up page space, but Con's friend Nate looks like he has potential to be a hero in an upcoming book. I really liked him, so fingers crossed.

description

This was very "insta lust (love)" to me. Con's stalking sets events into motion that finally brings him and Charlie together (though not in the manner he was hoping for.) Charlie's resistance was really short lived and they quickly moved into the "I love You" stage. While that didn't take away from my enjoyment I think a little more push/pull between Charlie and Con would have made the story stronger overall. There was very little angst (though there was some graphic violence) and absolutely NO OW/OM drama. The epilogue was sweet, though slightly confusing in one part.

Like I said, though, overall I really enjoyed this one. So two thumbs up from yours truly.

Conrad was lethal. No seriously. He was a hired killer. And every time he explained one of his kills or committed one, I fell even deeper for him. If loving him is wrong, I don't wanna be right. He was so sexy no matter what he did, whether it was taking a bullet, shooting someone in the face, or vowing to die, kill and live for Charlie.

Speaking of Charlie, she was pretty badazz herself. Without spelling out the plot, although she didn't have the same skill set as Con, there were times that she definitely held her own. And times when she surprised the heck out of everyone! How many women do you know that will make a shiv out of a toilet brush??? Exactly!!

Most of this story read like a 5-star read for me and just when I was satisfied to reward it with such, the story was over. While it was wrapped up with a neat little bow, it was too pat for me. It felt like too many plot holes were left unfilled. I'm really hoping that these details will be flushed out or clarified in a future book. *fingers crossed*

Well, this was a disappointment. As messed up as the premise for this sounded, I was looking forward to a dark, angsty romance story, but this was far from what I’d consider a good one. Also, it was fairly light. No real angst, edge of your seat moments to speak of.

Charlie, the heroine reminded me of those women from documentaries who write to serial killers in prison and marry them while they are incarcerated. Her “tragic” past left me feeling nothing. First, it lacked the emotion, second the tragedy of it was too convoluted and sort of meh. She had no substance. I really do not understand where Conrad’s obsession with her began. We just got told that he watched her from afar and there was just something about her.... Myeah, sure, ok.

Conrad, the (anti)hero, was not redeemable and I did not think he deserved a happy ever after. He was an angel and a bit of a cheese ball when it came to Charlie, but otherwise he just killed for money. No sob story as to how he came to do it, no additional motivation other than the amount he was getting per kill. His dad had the same profession, he saw it was profitable, learned the ropes and now at 33 he kills with the same ease he drinks his coffee in the morning.

There was just nothing special or interesting about these characters. He was a killer who obsessed about her and she was a girl with issues who gets turned on by a guy who kills and is only nice to her. If you ask me, that’s not romantic.. it’s kinda sick.

Now, apart from the fact that the characters had no depth and were very one dimensional, the plot was also weak. Very weak and unimaginative.

I had high expectations about this one and it was a letdown. The only thing I liked about it was Nate. Maybe I’ll read his book and hopefully for better but I don’t like the premise of how he meets his love interest. Not only is he so much older, but the situation is kinda messed up.

"Death before dishonor."
description

Dark Protector is a dark and delicious action-packed stand-alone by one of my go to authors Celia Aaron. Full of passion, desperation, and honor Conrad and Charlie's tale is sure to please!

description
"When I'd made the mistake of letting someone in, I'd paid dearly for it."
Charlie is a florist who has done her best to live a quiet life in her quiet corner of the earth. When her world is shaken by the sound of gunfire, Charlie is suddenly thrust into the world of mobsters, greed, death, and destruction.

description
"We kissed like we were ravenous for each other. What was left of my soul entwined with hers."
Conrad was born to kill. He is a man who was meant to live in the dark and kill. A contract assassin, he has done well for himself by following orders. When a quiet florist catches his eye, he tries to watch her from a distance. But when Charlie is thrown into the fire only Conrad has the strength to protect her and keep her safe. Charlie is hesitant to trust Conrad at first. After she has experienced great pain, Conrad has a lot to prove in order to win her trust. When passion sparks between the two, they are drawn together and lust and love drown them in a great tsunami.

description
"I'm going to have to fuck you until you know just how bad I can be."
Told in dual POV, Dark Protector has a well constructed plot with plenty of action and intrigue. Both Conrad and Charlie have haunted pasts and the intensity they share between them drives the action. As Conrad pushes harder to gain Charlie's trust, Charlie fights back until she realizes Conrad is her only way to finding peace. Although Conrad and Charlie's connection happened quite fast, the connection was intense and charged with passion and love. I loved the contrast between Conrad and Charlie and together they became a force to be reckoned with.

description

Overall, I highly recommend Dark Protector to my friends who enjoy an action packed read with dark undertones and an alpha male hero who does not stop. I have long been a fan of Ms. Aaron's work and Dark Protector is another great addition to the MUST READ shelf!

4.5 "I'd live and die for you" stars

Conrad/Con Mercer watched her for several months. Her every move, her every breath, face expression were stamped into his memory cause he knew she was out of reach for him. In his line of business there was no place for closeness, and he never even considered it as a posibility until the first time he saw her - Charlie , the beautiful yet guarded florist.
But what he wasn't aware of is the fact that Charlie also noticed this man sitting in his car across her flower shop. She never saw his face, but she felt his presence night after night he stayed parked there in silence and dark. Until his business caught up with him right there, in front of her shop and he had to show his real face.
He moved with aggresion, every part of him dripping calculated vengeance. Even his predatory walk screamed danger. Yet he was eerily beautiful for a man who killed without remorse.

But then that event circled its dark claws around her, making her a pawn in a mafia falldown and used as a bait to lure Conrad out in the line of fire. But that only stirred more rage in him as she became his mission, his cause.
I won't hurt you. You're safer with me than anywhere else.

For the moment, i was safe in the arms of a killer

The games, the betrayal and the lies complicate the position Con and Charlie found themselves in, when Con refuses to take away Charlie's life given as an order by the Boss. In just a matter of few fleeting moments, they both became liabilities, as the high prize bounty is set on them, putting their lives in the line of fire of mafia mercenary.
Con is set on protecting her, no matter what...and if all they have is this moment they will fulfill it and re-live it.
My life is yours. From the moment I first saw you, it was yours. I didn't realize it then, had no idea how much you got me...

You were the only thing that led me through the dark. Seeing you on the other side made it all bearable, even if I would never get to hold you.

but their paths turned out to be destined as the time is running out and working against them, the moments they share are precious and they soon learn how to trust each other, and the attraction soon becomes the comfort and solace, as they slowly reveal each other's scars from the past that molded them into the persons they are now...
I was afraid he'd see the full picture and know just how broken I truly was.

but the past merely shaped them and marked them yet there was the true essence that they found in one another...
i wished a lot of things - that we'd met under different circumstances, that I could spend more time getting to know him, that our days weren't numbered.

and when the time does run out, and they end up fighting for their lives once more, Con will stop at nothing to safe her again...
You're it for me. The only one I want to kill for. The one I'd die for.

I'd die a thousand times over if it meant she got to live for even one more day.

Dark protector was a fast paced, thrilling and raw action filled romance/crime drama with palpable physical chemistry between the two main characters, humorous dialogues in between the action sequences which somehow made it refreshing and exciting in a leisure way while expecting the plot to take you into a turmoil. I did find the relationship between Con and Charlie a bit rushed in the begining but it eventually deepened and developed nearing the end, of which I also felt as being a bit stretched towards the final conclusion.

BUT all in all, this is still a material that will take you on a cinematic like experience and wild thrilling action ride.

Charlie was a flower shop owner. Even though surrounded by beauty, she was battling an ugly past. Yet when she noticed she was being watched, she felt safe instead of fear.

Conrad (Con) Mercer was a ruthless man. As mafia contract killer, he did his works without a speck of emotion. But his soul needs soothing and watching Charlie provided that peace that made his life bearable. But longing for her could be deadly in his line of work.

I like the title and the intense look of the cover. The book itself is not as dark as the cover suggested, but it's still a hot and enjoyable read.

He was a battlefield, his story told with blood and scar tissue.

Con was methodical when it comes to his work and life. But behind the hard shell, he had a space in his heart for possibility of something more.

I’d always thought of her as a delicate flower, but her past had given her thorns. Ones I needed to inspect, to run my hands along them until they drew blood, until I understood every ounce of pain she’d endured.

I like how Charlie was not who I thought she would be. She seemed weak and meek initially, but as the story progressed, she showed she also had something else to offer.

“We got a plan, Sam. It’s real heroic. Ends with one of us getting his dick wet.” Nate stuffed flash grenades into the dark green duffel. “Hopefully, it’s me.”

And then there was Nate, who's actually my favorite character of all. He was the total opposite of Con's dark and brooding persona. He stole the spotlight the moment he was introduced.

The plot is quite simple, but the story was fast pace and quite action packed, so it kept it interesting. And I have to say Nate's character is primed for a spinoff. I hope one day he'll get his own story. As for the relationship part is a little too instant for me considering the book general feel.

Dark Protector is a story of finding comfort with unlikely people. It would appeal to fans of sexy romantic suspense.

P.S.: I love the sentiment of why she chose flower business

“These hands were violence and nothing more. Killing was my religion.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

From the moment I read “Blackwood” I knew that this author was going to graduate to Stalker territory for me. Her ability to suck you in and make you Crave the darkness as if it’s your own light is what I love about her writing and I have no intention of ever going back to what we consider as “normal” reads.

Some say that you can sense evil before it comes and that saying has never been more true once you look into the eyes of Conrad Mercer. Being a contract killer, you have to be somewhat desensitized to certain things and having feelings is one of them. He’s trained to kill and take out anything that comes in his way but he also has a very complicated weakness. And she comes in the form of being a beautiful florist.

“She was my Collateral damage, a victim of the death and destruction that always followed in my wake.

Charlie has been through her fair share of heartbreak in her life and the only thing that’s been giving her a peace of mind lately is her job being a florist. Having a fairly quiet life now, Charlie realizes that she has a Stalker and he’s none other than the contract killer himself. You would think that knowing you’re being watched by a professional killer would scare the beejeezus out of her but for Charlie, there’s a calmness of knowing that he’s watching her and keeping her safe. That is until Con’s dangerous world collides with her.

How far will Con go to protect the woman he calls his Angel?

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

If I had to sum up this story, I would say it was sexy with a little bit of grit, suspenseful and action packed down to very last word. Con was a man who you truly did not want to mess with and when it came to protecting Charlie? He was damn near suicidal. I loved how he always put her first and even though I hated the insta lust, his feelings for her felt genuine.

Now as for Charlie, I loved the fact that she wasn’t this weak heroine who couldn’t handle anything. This was a tough chick that got sh*t done for herself and I admired that about her. Like I said before, I wasn’t a fan of the insta lust/love in this but somehow it worked out and we got one hell of a story. Now can somebody please get Nate his own book?! What do I have to do to make that happen? You want my first born? Done. You’ll probably bring him back within the first hour anyways.

If you love a hot action packed stories, this one has your name all over it.

Conrad is the Mafia's go to guy when they need a mess cleaned up. He's a hitman loyal to the highest bidder and he's okay with the life he leads. Until that life takes the girl he cares about, even though they've never met. Charlie has been his since he started watching her at her florist shop, even if she doesn't know it. But after his enemies kidnap her because of him he knows that once he saves her, he's not going to let her go.

Dark Protector was a very fast paced story and I loved that it never stopped that momentum it had from the beginning. Right from the first chapter we're kept on this race of murders and kidnapping, and the whole story was very intriguing.

I really enjoyed seeing Conrad with Charlie, and it was great that she could surprise this hardened killer. I liked both characters and I felt they suited each other really well. One of Conrad's friends made an appearance too and I hope there will be more to come from him.

Bottom line, this was a great book. It's not very dark so I think anyone that likes a fast suspense to read will enjoy this one.

Conrad “Con” Mercer is a hitman living a solitary life.  Despite accepting his choices, Con doesn’t find much solace amidst the violence until he sees woman that quiets his mind. As he watches her from a distance, she grounds him and gives him a few moments of respite. She is his glimmer of hope and light until his world shatters such purity.

“Tell me your darkest sin, and maybe I’ll tell you one of my hundreds”

Charlie is the proprietor of a local flower shop and mainly keeps to herself for her own reasons. However, when she begins to sense she’s being watched from afar, rather being scared, she feels safe despite not knowing the man cloaked behind darkness. But for Charlie, experiences occur in her life for a reason and this unknown man is about to unleash a chain of events.

“Staying closed off was the only way I knew to survive. When I’d made the mistake of letting someone in, I’d paid dearly for it.”

Conrad knows having a weakness in his line of business can be disastrous because of predatory practices by his colleagues. Unknowingly bringing danger to Charlie’s doorstep, Con has no choice but to protect what he feels is his no matter the consequence. During their time together, Charlie is hesitant to trust Conrad but with limited options, she begins to realize there’s more to him than just a Kevlar protected shell of a man.

“He brought his palm to my cheek. I flinched, but he only used the pad of his thumb to wipe my tear away. “I won’t hurt you. You’re safer with me than anywhere else.”

As truths are revealed, Conrad discovers that Charlie isn’t a shrinking violet and her resilience offers an equalizing balance to their relationship. For the first time, Con begins to be hopeful for a future rather than just being resigned until his number is called. Working together, Charlie and Con try to outrun the bounty on their heads until the only option available becomes glaringly apparent.

“I made all the wrong decisions long before I found my thorny rose, and I deserved death more than most.”

With the tension of fighting a mob boss and his minions, there isn’t much time for Charlie and Conrad to rest, but the intensity of their situation stimulates the awareness of their feelings toward each other. Knowing they must live in the moment, the sexual tension they feel is palpable and when they surrender, it’s combustible.

“Say my name when you come.” I dove back down and fastened my lips around her clit, licking it with the broad side of my tongue until she froze and fractured into a million pieces.”

From the first page, the pace is swift offering vivid play-by-action leading to some serious page turning moments. As for the characters, Conrad’s bad ass persona is sexy and very alpha but knowing there is a softer side to him, adds to his appeal. With Charlie, on the surface she seems like a softie but being able to hold her own really strengthens her character. Additionally, with both willing to sacrifice for each other, shows just how self-less they can be. In addition, Conrad’s friend, Nate, is a worthy character and deserves a mention. His humor and easy going ways made him a standout and really balanced Conrad’s intensity.

As I’ve said before, Celia Aaron is a natural born story-teller gifted with the ability to stylistically craft the written word. Each time I read one of her books, I’m amazed at her range, creativity and skill. In Dark Protector, Ms. Aaron invents a world where two characters would unlikely merge but then shows how everyone deserves a second or even third chance. For those looking for a suspenseful romance, I highly recommend Dark Protector.

"The moment I saw you, something inside me -something I thought it died a long time ago- clicked. I didn't realise it then, but I do now. You're it for me. The first, the last, the only person I want to touch or taste. The only one I want to kill for. The one I'd die for.

Conrad aka Con is:
-an amateur stalker (Charlie knew that he was stalking her for months)
-a professional killer (who only kills, if he is paid to kill) and
-a complete idiot (who does not realise that his enemies will follow him and learn that he likes a girl)

Charlie is:
-a florist who loves her job (she is kidnapped and she thinks of the flowers in her shop that are going to brown and die)
-a survival expert (she can remove bullets from wounds and kill and skin rabbits for dinner) and
-truly attracted to the dark side of Con
("you want to know how evil i am? How many souls I've claimed?"
"Yes."
"I've ripped men's throats out. Spit their blood on the floor as they as they writhed and die."
"Con!"
"I've strangled men with my bare hands. I would do it all again. No hesitation. Do you know why I'd do it all again?"
"Why?"
"Because it led me to you."
)

Luckily they will fall in love with each other and they will try to survive the hell that has broken loose because of Con's enemies.

The book has:
Lots of killings, blood, love, tatoos, secrets, sad childhood stories, flowers, explosions AND a great epilogue.
I had my fun.

4 The-Angel-of-Death Stars

I love Celia Aaron books. They are so amazing. This book, like her other books, was wonderful, fantastic. She really has a special talent for writing Dark books.

Conrad is a paid killer. He is a dangerous man but every day he sits in his car and stares through a flower shop at Charlie. But he has never spoken to her. one day his enemies kidnap Charlie to get him. So he does everything he can to save her.

"I won’t hurt you. You’re safer with me than anywhere else."

For months, Charlie knows some one watches her. she doesn’t know him but whenever she noticed him, she felt safe. But now she finds out who he is.

"I saw a killer in a dark suit with haunting eyes and a lust for murder."

Charlie has a dark secret. A secret that caused her trust issue. She thinks if she let some one in, she’d paid dearly for it.

I liked her character. At first, I thought she is fragile but at some point, I found her brave and strong. The story was well-written. The characters were well-described. Main characters aside, I really liked Nate. What can I say?! I have a thing for funny guys! I wish, Ms. Aaron writes a book for him! I love to read his story too!

I. DID. IT!
I FINALLY FINISHED THIS BOOK!

description

descriptiondescription

** 2 Seductive Lip Bites **

I've been reading this one book... just this one... totally devoted to seeing this one story through. It's taken me DAYS to get through this one... DAYS! Maybe not a big deal for some, but really unusual for me and my reading habits.

Now, please be advised that I appear to be in the teeny, tiny minority in my opinion of this one. I may be the only one of my friends who didn't rave on this book. That's okay with me... I'm fine going against the flow...

description

sitting at a table by myself...

description

standing still while everyone else jumps around...

description

I'd like to make it clear that I really loved the other Celia Aaron books I've had the pleasure of reading. Her Acquisition: The Complete Series... *muah* LOVED it! Unfortunately, this book did not do it for me. Not even a little bit.

description

I was annoyed pretty much straight out of the gate with this one. This story just didn't make sense for me. I think I may have sprained an eye muscle with how much rolling my eyes were doing.

description

Starting from the very beginning. We've got the contract killer who spends his free time parked outside a flower shop pining for a chick he's never spoken to, met, brushed past on the street. Why was he obsessed with her anyway? Under what circumstance did he initially find himself that began his bizarre obsession? He just drove by one day and saw her in the window and decided to start stalking her?

description

Nope, not buying it.

Everything about the h was utterly ridiculous. She knows he's watching for months (a year or something?) and, although she has z-e-r-o clue who the mystery stalker is, she somehow feels "safe" knowing he's creeping on her there in the street behind his car's tinted glass... just always watching her every move. Uh... okay. I find this incredibly odd particularly given her past. Her whole backstory was just disjointed and bizarre. Held captive by an insane doomsday prepper? Really?

description

Then, we've got this insta-love thing that occurs between them. Um... what? Did I miss some voodoo magic going on here? I mean, of course he loves her... he's been Captain Stalker for quite some time now. But, her... ??? I don't know... I just couldn't get behind this "love".

description

I enjoyed the action in this book. And, there were a few moments early on of some alpha-male caveman growling that, we all know, I really enjoy. I must admit... I liked the side character, Nate, far more than the two main characters... so, points for this side guy!

I'd never discourage anyone from reading a book. In fact, I encourage people to pick up as many books as possible... even if your BFF in the whole wide world thinks it's not worth a read. We all dig different things and that's part of the beauty of books in general. So many flavors for everyone! Read some of the fabulous reviews left by others... loads of my pals here on goodreads LOVED this book. It just might be a great read for you! I'd just say, sincerely, from me to you...

“Angelus Mortis.”

The following ratings are out of 5:
Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙
Romance: 💚🖤💙💜❤️
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📘📙📙
World building: 🌎🌍🌏🌎🌏
Character development: 😳🫣🤫😍🥰

The heroine: Charlie - she own’s a flower shop and often sees a nice car with tinted windows parked outside her shop every few nights, though she knows it should scare her, she feels safe when she sees the car. Until one night when there is a shooting outside involving the man in the car.

The Hero: Conrad - He is a killer for the mob and is very good at his job. He recently got a job from the number two man in charge to kill the number one man. He did and there has been some warring within the ranks. It comes to a head when some guys try to punch his ticket while he is in his car outside Charlie’s shop.

The Story: After Charlie is kidnapped because of Conrad, he is determined to save her. His obsession with her is complete and he feels protective of her. He would park outside of her shop because staring at her working would calm his mind and bring him some sort of peace.

This book was steamy and had a strong heroine who is also a bit broken by her past and a killer Hero who is obsessed with her. He starts out a stalker and ends up a protector who is willing to kill for her. The book is told in dual points of view by two narrators, Erin Mallon and Lance Greenfield. Lance does the entire chapters that are told in Conrad’s POV and Erin does the chapters done in Charlie’s POV. I like it better when each narrator does their own part no matter whose point of view the chapter is in, but despite that these two did a good job.

Dark Protector was just okay for me. I didn't feel like there was enough character development for this story to feel "real" to me.
One of the reasons this book did not work for me was the fact that I didn't fully connect with the characters and I didn't really 'get' their connection. Being a big fan of dark and gritty romances, I had really high hopes for this book. I enjoyed the characters of Conrad and Charlie, but the story felt rushed and I would have liked more character development. Also, I've only found Dark Protector mildly dark, surely not as dark as I was expecting.
This was definitely a fast-paced thriller and an emotional roller-coaster....but for some reason it just didn't all come together for me.

I love a hero who may think he's not good enough for his heroine but he will do anything for her...including killing.
"Why would an angel cry for a sinner like me?"~Conrad

Conrad is the epitome of an anti-hero. He kills people for a living. He has no remorse. He kills for whoever pays the highest. He's had his sights on Charlie for while, content to just watch. When she becomes involved in his blow back, he decides he will do anything to protect her.

He was absolutely amazing. I love how he loved Charlie and just could not resist her. He was determined to protect what was his.
"You’re it for me. The first, the last, the only person I want to touch or taste. The only one I want to kill for. The one I’d die for.”~Conrad

Charlie was also a great heroine. She was strong and feisty and wasn't about to just lay down and take it. While she had her reservations at first, understandably so, she realized Conrad was what she needed and he would always take care of her. But she was also what he needed....someone to love.
“I love you more than I’ve loved anything in my whole life. You’re worth dying for.”~Conrad

This was great book and the suspense kept me on pins and needles. I really hope she comes out with Nate's book. I'm looking forward to more.
"You’re mine. You’ve always been mine. I just had to find you.”~Conrad

I loved this book from the first word to the last. There wasn't one thing I didn't like about it. And that's saying something. That doesn't happen very often fir me.

Con is a hot as fuck hitman. As I was reading the story I was wishing that I was Charlie. Is that wrong? This man was the perfect mix of dark and light. He never thought he'd have anything for himself other than the life of a killer that he'd built for himself. He was born into that life. One look at Charlie and he knew he wanted more for himself.

He released the blade and stepped toward me so that the tip pressed against his hard stomach. “My life is yours. From the moment I first saw you, it was yours. I didn’t realize it then, had no idea how much you got to me. Not until I found you in that basement. My mistake led you there. And I deserve to pay for it.”

And Charlie. Damn I have a girl crush on her. Anyone on the outside looking in would think she's a sweet unassuming florist. She was SO MUCH more than that though. She was perfect for Con in every way.

“You were made for me.” I gripped her hair and pulled her head back. “I love you, thorns and all.” I claimed her lips, taking her breath away and replacing it with my own. I needed to be her air, her life. To live for her—there was nothing I’d ever wanted more.

This book was the perfect mix of action, romance, and sex.

3* bad things STARS!

Review @ Midnight Romance

Celia Aaron quickly became my one-click author. She always wrote intriguing story with spices. Nonetheless this latest release, Dark Protector, really intrigued me. It has mafia theme, anti-hero, bad-ass heroine, suspense and of course, romance.

Charlie's life was upside down from a florist then a witness. She was kidnapped and tortured by unknown people. Conrad Mercer is a hit-man for his entire life. He works for the bad guys aka mafia. When his secret crush has been taken away, Conrad will kill for her.

description

The plot was predictable yet fascinating. Stalker guy and the ordinary girl? Same old story. But hold your judgment first. This one has different vibe. Conrad maybe like your usual stalker anti-hero. He's deadly and calculate. Who knows a vicious man like him could harbor a certain kind of love towards a flower girl?
Every life I took, every decision I made—they were all leading me to her. She was a reward I didn’t earn, a gift I didn’t deserve. But like the selfish bastard I was, I would take everything she offered. Each touch bound me to her.

Also Charlie isn't your typical weak heroine. She hide something from her dark past and no one knows. At first, Charlie was terrified because she's clearly in shock and have no idea WTF is going on. Slowly she began to show the real "Charlie". A survivor and bad-ass woman.

While Conrad and Charlie on the run of being target by the mafia, they started to form a connection. Conrad already in lust with her. But for Charlie, he's a killer also her protector. It confuses her and wasn't easy for Charlie but somehow Conrad managed to convince her.
“I don’t deserve you.” He kissed my hair. “But it doesn’t matter. I’ll kill to keep you in my arms where you belong.”
I sighed as sleep tugged me down. “You make murder sound more romantic than it should.”

They began to build trust with sharing their dark past. It called insta-love. Unbelievable, right? The chemistry was too rushed but I enjoyed their sex scenes. Yum! They're insanely HOT together even without chemistry. So dirty but yet so sweet.
“Killer with a heart of gold.”
“Stop.” He bit my lower lip.
“All soft and melty on the inside.”
“I’m warning you.”
“A real sweetheart.”
He smirked. “That’s it.”
“What?” I played innocent.
“I’m going to have to fuck you until you know just how bad I can be.”

description

Of course, they aren't easily ride off into the sunset. Conrad must finish what he started to begin his new page. Charlie isn't a kind of woman who will stand down. The story was too dragging for my taste and take too long. However, it's nicely written and well-balanced between romance and suspense. Overall, Dark Protector is still an enjoyable read despite my issues with the chemistry and insta-love. Still recommend for y'all thrill seekers.

4.5*

I loved this book.

Yes it's crazy and OTT but so entertaining.

Conrad is a killer, the Angel of Death. It's all he's ever known, his father held this position before him and after his death Conrad stepped into his shoes. His life is dark and he knows what he is but the first time he looked through the flower shop window and saw her he felt Peace.

'I got a glimpse of her. And then I knew peace. I could sit for hours and just watch her.'

'How many times had I watched her through the window? I couldn’t count the nights, the moments; there were far too many. Each time, I wanted to go in and say something to her. Each time, I remained just outside her warm halo. A woman like her wasn’t meant for a man like me.'

'I looked down at my scarred and inked knuckles. The mottled flesh told the story of blood, pain, and a life lived in service to death. I couldn’t imagine anything different. These hands were violence and nothing more. Even so, I imagined how Charlie’s skin would feel under my rough touch. Soft, so soft.'

She became the only bright spot on his days, he'd park outside her shop every night feeling calm the second he laid eyes on her again.
He should have realised it would be noticed, he should have known by parking outside her shop every night he was putting her in danger but he didn't and he did and now he has to save her.

Charlie's never seen the guy that parks outside her shop everyday but she feels safe knowing he's there. Then one day she sees him for the first time and her life changes forever.

Conrad is the hot tattooed killer with a soft side and Charlie is way more than she first appears, she's a woman with a past and one not to mess with.

Nate, it's impossible to not love Nate and I'm so glad I read this before his book (which is my next read) he adds humour and now I can't wait to start his book.

"You ready for this?” I hit the button to pop the trunk.
"About as ready as I was when I had to get that prostate exam last year.” He flicked the cigarette butt into an oily puddle. The surface glazed, but didn’t fire. “Kinda worried going into it, but strangely satisfied on the back end.”

Darker and grittier than what I'm used to, but it was so freakin' GOOD!

Conrad is a hitman for hire. The job has been his whole life. He has no family, few friends and undisputed skills that have made him more money than he needs and a reputation of always getting the job done.

All that changes when he lays eyes on an innocent flower shop girl. Suddenly his world isn't so dark and lonely. For a few moments in time, Con watches over her and a little of her light warms his soul.

Charlie has picked up the pieces of her life more than once and she isn't looking for a repeat perfomance. She's, if not happy, at least contect with her safe and routine life. With her own past haunting her and her penchant for keeping her head down, she is not jumping with joy when the mystery person outside her shop gets her embroiled in a power play within a crimanl mob family.

Because somehow, they found out about Con's little obsession with Charlie and her life is now threatened. Teaming up is the only way to keep Charlie alive and Con is willing and able to take on the world to keep his guilty pleasure alive and kicking. Even if that includes Charlie.

Angel of Death Meets his perfect match

It's been a while since I read this the first time. I didn't write the review instantly because I was still savoring it. Also I couldn't really find the words to express how awesome, amazing and beautiful this love story was. I still don't.

Anywho, when I finally found myself ready to review, I got sucked back into the story and found myself instead, re-reading it. And yes, the second time around still warrants a 5 star review. All I can say it that I loved Con! The good and the bad, I loved Charlie with her kick ass attitude and big heart, I loved the action, the humor and the well done ride or die vibe of the whole story. It was right up my alley and I ate it up like a triple scoop sundae. No lie.

The story telling was flawless, the MCs complicated and deep. They were the underdog you go hoarse rooting for. They were brave, ballsy, straight up crazy at times but above all loveable. The villians were easy to loathe and the secondary characters (Hello, Nate!) were amazing. I am so happy that Nate gets his own story and it brings Sabrina back *sigh*

I want Nate's story to so live up the hype because I'm already in love with him lol! And I kind of like that the author came full circle with the characters that most piqued my interest :)

Memorable Moments:
I loved their time at the cabin. It was a bit of down time but it created a stronger bond between Con and Charlie. It was also short lived but kept in time with the rest of the story and didn't slow down the momentum at all.

And pretty much any scene with Nate was memorable. He was hilarious and a good guy in a twisty sarcastic kind of way. You have to read it to know what I'm trying to say over here Lol!

4 “The angel of death” stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

It’s been a long time since I last read a book by this talented author. She’s writes dark so well that am always left wanting more. She doesn’t pull back any punches. I remember reading a trilogy by her and it blew my fucking mind. It was twisted and crazy and super erotic. Although this one was slightly less dark and more action packed. Things she always delivers on are

Dominant hero ✔️
heroine with backbone ✔️
Suspense ✔️
Super steamy ✔️
action-packed ✔️
Romance ✔️

This one wasn’t any different. It was fast paced filled with tons of speed and action and drama. I was unable to put it down. The chemistry between the MCs was intense and off the charts hot. I loved how it picked up speed and till the last page it was filled with twists and turns I didn’t see coming.

”I’d always thought of her as a delicate flower, but her past had given her thorns. Ones I needed to inspect, to run my hands along them until they drew blood, until I understood every ounce of pain she’d endured.”

Conrad has become obsessed with the woman who owns a flower shop. Something about her calms him down. Every day at the same time, he watches her go through her routine wishing he could go talk to her, maybe ask her out and make her his but his profession as a hitman will never allow that. When his enemy gets the wind of his obsession and captures her, all hell breaks lose.

”He moved with aggression, every part of him dripping calculated vengeance. Even his predatory walk screamed danger. Yet he was eerily beautiful for a man who killed without remorse”

Charlie knows someone always watches her almost like stalking but never has she felt in danger. She feels protected and cherished. When suddenly, she watches the man in the car murder someone out on the street, she knows she has to run fast since her memories and wounds from her past are still fresh. But life has a way of putting wrenches in your plan.

Tied up. Alone. Scared. Confused. that’s how she founds herself when she wakes up. Feeling like this might be the end but then comes her knight in shining armour, guns blazing and saves her. But she’s more than furious because he’s the reason behind her kidnapping and now only he can keep her safe.

”What mistake?” My hands trembled as he leaned closer. I backed into the island until I couldn’t move any farther. He kept coming until the hilt pressed against my ribs.
“Wanting you.” He lifted a hand and ran his fingertips across my forehead, then down my cheek. “Wanting you so badly that you were all I could think about sometimes. You were the only thing that led me through the dark. Seeing you on the other side made it all bearable, even if I would never get to hold you.” His voice rasped with raw emotion.

Conrad can’t let her out of his sight or protection even if she begs. Now that she is part of his life, there’s no letting her go. The danger of his enemies is still there which ends up making both of them targets. As they go in hiding, the attraction between them sizzles. Which leads to sharing of their deep darkest secrets, their past and knowing that they connect in more ways than one.

Her eyes widened as I advanced on her and pinned her to the wall. “Con—”
“You want to know how evil I am? How many souls I’ve claimed?” I gripped her hair and yanked her head back.
Her pulse quickened, the beat fluttering at her throat, as she dug her nails into my biceps. “Yes.” Her breathy voice told me all I needed to know. She liked my violence, and fuck if that didn’t turn me on. My cock roared to life and demanded I finally make her mine.

Conrad was intense, caring, possessive, lethal, domineering and utterly in love with Charlie. He was willing to die for her. I loved how Charlie saw past his demons, his darkness calling to her. Their connection built in a short time but it felt genuine and strong. I enjoyed them together and the scenes were super steamy and dirty.

If you guys love a fast paced, intense ride with amazing secondary characters, lots of heat and thrill. Then this is the one for you. Conrad is one irresistible hunk. ♥️

4 stars!

"Dark protector" turned out to be better than I thought. It was one of those books that had a lil of everything. With plenty shoot outs, bad guys, mobsters, and in the middle we have our innocent h, Charlie. She somehow becomes the center of this violence by becoming the obsession of our H Conrad, who just happened to be a hit man.

description

Considering chapter one starts right off the bat with a BAM! Everything moves along at a fast paced. Once Charlie, finds herself the next hit of the mob and having no choice but to trust Con.

description

These two made a great couple they just had the chemistry. I really liked Charlie, she was a strong h considering all the pain she's had to endure in her past, it made her smarter and more appreciative of life. Conrad, he was awesome a ruthless hit man, cold hearted but when it came to Charlie, he was a sweetheart. It was insane the length he would go to protect her.

Oh gosh can't finish this review without mentioning Nate, that man had me LMAO!
He was definitely the humor of this book, even though there was a couple of times when I wanted to put a piece of tape of his sexy mouth. But anyway I'm hoping his getting his book I want to know what happens with him. ❤

I went into this read very excited, as I had seen a ton of reviews from readers who actually really enjoyed this book. Unfortunately, I just couldn't seem to grasp the same passion as everyone else had. I truly did try to become more committed to Conrad and Charlie...but for some reason I had a hard time becoming emotionally connected to them. I was trying hard to figure out why, and I don't know if I can even explain myself!

This read is certainly not boring...in fact, it is action pact through out the whole story..Conrad is a killer...and he ends up spotting a woman who he falls for right away..while he is across the street from her flower shop. He spends months watching Charlie, and she is aware of this strange man watching her. Conrad hasn't approached mainly because he doesn't want to drag Charlie into his violent lifestyle. The sad thing is though, some other killers think that Charlie and Conrad have something going on...so they end up taking Charlie one day, and suddenly she is thrown into a violent world she doesn't want anything to do with. Her hero will come to save her though, and there are things that Charlie wants to remain hidden about her own life. These two grow close very quickly while they are on the fun from hitmen that want them dead. Will they be able to survive???

Like I said, this is full of action, and Charlie is a neat heroine in the way she doesn't lay down and take crap from anybody. She knows how to take care of herself. I think what bothered me though is one minute the author painted her as really vulnerable, and the next she was this strong woman who could hold her own. It wasn't consistent and therefore it made it hard for me to identify with her. The same goes for Con....one minute he was this cold hearted man, then all of a sudden he is melting for her.. Also, I had a hard time feeling the sex scenes...again...I just couldn't seem to connect to them..

I do feel that this is mostly the case of it being me, and not the book! There are enough people who did really enjoy this, so I would hate to have people not check it out because of my opinion!! So my final word would be that it is worth checking out if you are into an action pact read!!!

'Dark Protector' by Celia Aaron is the story of Charlie and Con. Con is a harden person who does things that hurt his heart and sole. Con had a tough childhood where he learned most everything he does now from that childhood. There really seems to be no joy in his life and he just goes through the emotions of what he has to do. But he has found something that has awaking his heart and sole and that is Charlie. Con has yet to meet her and he knows with his dark actions he will never get that chance nor should he. So he sits in his car and watches Charlie from a far as she works in her Flower shop. But one day his love of watching her collides with his dark work. Now Con has to keep Charlie safe from those that want to hurt her to hurt him. But can Con give her up now that he is with her and getting to know her? Charlie has her own past history that makes her feel she has a dark cloud over her so she isn't this innocent person that Con thinks he needs to protect.
This is a Dark Type Romance...but if you are like me and love a strong heroine and a man who things he evil but turns to soft when he is with the women he loves...than this book is for you! Another great exciting read by Ms. Aaron! "My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read."
