Start your review of One Way Down (Or Another)
An unexpected and profoundly moving book. Not a coming of age book or an addiction story. This was a complex portrait of a person we might see on the street, on the corner, leaving a soup kitchen. Like the best writers who manage to bring the personal and political into one unforgettable narrative, Lorenz leaves us with a haunting impression of both the anguish and solace of living.
I was disappointed that the story never flowed. The main character just wandered into and back out of people's lives. While I am not opposed to reading fiction that is dark and brooding, I would much prefer some balance and/or a good story. What did the main character learn as a result of his experiences as outlined in the book? Did he impact anyone else's life? Why did he go home to Ohio? Why did he go back to San Francisco?
