This book records the rise of Tencent panoramically, and it reinterprets the difficulty and uniqueness of China's blend into globalization from the perspective of internet. The development route of Tencent is also the epitome of the growth of Chinese internet companies. If you know Tencent, you will know China's internet industry.
Excellent storytelling on the evolution of Tencent and also the Chinese Internet industry over the past two decades. It is too easy to label the company as a copycat and disregard its merits, but the micro-innovations, execution, and management style of both Tencent and Pony Ma are astoundingly impressive. The Chinese Internet market is very different from its US counterpart, so using the US ways of assessing the ability and outlook of Tencent is simply a wrong approach. Tencent followed the users and applied localized functions to an extreme, which led to its success today. The ability to monetize QQ and wechat is enviable by its US counterparts. I really admire Pony’s management style - rational, low key, and hands-on. Execution is the key in the world of internet products and services.
The author went very far to tell an absorbing story of a group of young entrepreneurs. While the picture was painted rosily, some parts of this book didn't make sense from a business perspective. It focused too much on individuals and too little on operational history and decision-making of the corporate.
Tencent is a company that intensely focuses on the future thus it does not pay as much attention to collecting the past. As the company matured from it's start up days and grown to become Asia's internet giant Mr. Wu Xiaobo have been hired to write a book to chronicle all the pivotal moments in the company's 20 year history.
Good book about Tencent's history, plenty of anecdotes about founders of Qihu, Netease, Sina and etc. It's helpful to understand Tencent's DNA. But the book lacks analysis, sometimes too plain and a little boring.
An interesting book to show the world how Tencent transformed from a copy-cat style company to an innovation-driven platform. Founder Ma admitted there is no single day in Tencent's history that he is not dealing with crisis. Even on his 40th birthday, no one remembered because Tencent was fighting with Qihu 360 to prove its integrity and prevent customer losses. Worth spending time on this book.
