Catherine Lundoff is the Hipster Queen of Queer Characters. She's been writing them for over a decade and Out of this World proves it. Queen of Swords Press put together a marvelous collection of Catherine's short stories starring non-het protagonists. Fans of Crimson Peak or Pride, Prejudice and Zombies will enjoy the genre fiction written with a literary sensibility.

Difficult to narrow down my favorite stories, but Medium Mechanique is great spooky steampunk, The Egyptian Cat oozes

If I had to sum up Lundoff’s collection Out of This World: Queer Speculative Fiction Stories in a single word (which would be a totally unfair thing to require me to do) it would be “versatile.” This volume touches base on a broad variety of genres and subgenres yet succeeds in being a unified stylistic whole. There is everything from steampunk horror to hard-boiled alien invasion to magical police procedural, each story both drawing lovingly from its literary inspirations and turning them ...more

Catherine Lundoff's Out of This World: Queer Speculative Fiction Stories is an excellent and highly enjoyable collection of eleven stories that can be classified as the queer fantastic and feature LGBTQ characters. It's the first book from Queen of Swords Press, which is a new independent small press.

As many speculative fiction readers are aware of, LGBTQ characters are seldom seen in speculative fiction stories, because heterosexual characters can be found

Out of This World suggests entering other worlds. The worlds Lundoff transported me to were well worth visiting, and the distinctive voices of the characters drew me into their stories. Some were more to my taste than others, but I could enjoy the writing in all of them. My favorites are the faery world of "A Scent of Roses," a satisfying what-happened-afterwards take on the Tam Lin tale; the semi-real world of "At the Roots of the World Tree" where a determinedly ordinary clerk in a sentient ...more

Tales of the queer fantastic. Queer speculative fiction stories. What can the discerning reader expect? Distant planets? Ghosts, witches, old gods? The Queen of the Fay. A magical bookstore (are not they all, to some degree?). Body-theft. Steampunk? Vampires? Yes, the discerning reader will not be disappointed. The fantastic is here indeed.

In this first collection published by Queen of Swords Press, the reader will find a steampunk ghost story, Beauty and the Beast retold with vampires, and a

I would rate even lower if there hadn't been a couple of stories that really stood out from the rest. Overall? The ebook was poorly formatted, there was no information about any of the authors except the one who had put the book together, and I couldn't even figure out who the author was for one story. Some of the stories just didn't work, and one was so annoying I completely skipped it.

I thought "speculative fiction" was another term for "hard sci-fi". This is not that. This is shit. The first story was incomprehensible - I couldn't tell who was speaking or acting at any time or what was going on. The second an third weren't as bad, but they were completely uninteresting. So I stopped reading after that (about a quarter of the way through).

This anthology contains very different stories across a range of sub-genres. The world building was interesting, and I'd love to see some of these characters and their worlds expanded into longer stories.

What a wonderful book full of stories.
All these are fantasy and pure fun and the love included.
I really enjoyed this and would love to read more from this author.
I won this book in a competition and I couldn't be happier with this.
Thank you for this book Catherine

Pretty typical short story collection, hit or miss. I enjoyed a few, but many I just didn't connect to.

An ebook, this collection of tales was interesting for its variety of characters and venue. Each story had developed voices to move the plot along, with enough description to give me a visual.
