"Find a friend that won’t eat you."

Three stories of friendship and struggle between two very different friends,Yak and Dove. In the first, Dove shares his wish with Yak that they might be twins who think alike. Which they clearly don't. Dove just wants Yak to be a bit more like Dove! So they fight, and stop being friends, and Yak holds a contest to see who can replace Dove as his best friend. A wolf wins, prompting the above advice, which is for my money the most useful and interesting advice in

“Yak and Dove” may be my new favorite children’s book ever. The story of friendship, both the ups and downs, is beautiful. The artwork is stunning. It’s the type of work that I want to hang all over the house. This is sure to be a classic and I encourage anyone with children in their lives (or without) to pick up a copy. I’ll be picking up several.

Five (hundred) enthusiastic stars!

Quite possibly my favourite Kyo Maclear book (to date)! Maclear's collection of three short stories told through the dialogue of two unlikely friends (yak and dove) is perfectly whimsical and delightful. Esme Shapiro's warm, folksy illustrations are luminous. An arty offering in the tradition of Frog and Toad.

Great children's book! I got it from BookCon and put it into my babysitting bag. Read it to the kids for a bedtime story and they loved it. I'm glad it included some large vocabulary words, because they were able to learn some new things. :)

I love this story! It perfectly encapsules how opposites can be friends. I am going to recommend it to my school's lower elementary teachers and guidance counselors.

Why are friends, friends? Do we want an echo of ourselves? Do we want our friends to agree with everything we do, and say, and want? Or do we want someone who has different ideas, likes different things, and is, well different.

The story of Yak and Dove tells the story of two unlikely friends. I like how they talk about themselves. Here is where they are comparing each other:
You have feathers and I have fur.
You can be a little too quiet.
You can be a little too loud.
And you are smelly, Yak.
And you

A picture book with three different stories, Maclear’s Yak and Dove represents his traditional simplistic and moralistic style of storytelling paired with sweet water-colored and colored-penciled illustrations. Similarly to Shireen’s Neti and the Bird, Yak and Dove are unlikely friends and the theme of embracing indifferences stays consistent throughout the plot. Hilariously, Yak and Dove begin their story by contemplating what it would be like if they were twins, concluding in an obvious fight ...more

This is a great story about friendship. Yak and Dove are very different. When they start looking at ways they are different, they decide that maybe they should not be friends and end up angry with one another. When Yak goes looking for a new friend, he needs help. He does not know how to go about finding a friend. After holding auditions, he realizes that he and Dove do have things in common and they care about one another. This book is made up of 3 short stories that emphasize what makes a frie ...more

Yak and Dove by Kyo Maclear and Esme Shapiro is another picture book by Maclear about two unlikely friends, in this case a Yak and a Dove, which is filled with gorgeous illustrations by Shapiro. This book includes three adorable stories about two opposites, and how they still have things in common and can be friends. I especially liked the bit about still finding a friend that wouldn’t eat you. The story is whimsical and the art is great compliment to that, if you are looking for a new picture b ...more

Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Random House Canada for the ARC of this book!

Am I the only one who didn't like this book?? The story was uninteresting and the plot was absent (was there a plot?); the moral was weak. Yak and Dove's illustrations were beautiful and unique but the writing felt banal and severely unfinished. I'd pass this one up for other more interesting and charming children's books like Shelter. Nightmare.

This story holds lovely pictures of all kinds of animals and a story about friendship. Will Yak and Dove who are so very different find ways to stop arguing and renew their friendship? A smart marmot helps by holding auditions, a bit of humor there, and quite a bit of disagreement, but at last, Yak and Dove realize they can find ways to be friends.

This story almost seems to be three different stories woven into one. The Yak and the Dove are friends, but they are not twins. Finding a new friend can be hard. And one has to learn the love the noisy quiet. A fun book of back and forth between two friends.

I love this book and the illustrations and Dove and Yak's friendship. Give it to fans of 'Elephant and Piggie' who love reading about two friends are compliment each other in their personalities (even if they don't always compliment each other when they are together)

I liked it. The stories are sweet and funny. All of them are about friendship. Also children can learn all the differences between a yak and a dove.

This book was so adorable. It's about being friends with those who aren't exactly like you. The story is sweet, and at a few points had me wiping back tears. Just a lovely, beautifully illustrated book. Great one to pick up if you have any parents with little ones on your Christmas list.

What a fantastic picture book of whimsical, amusing illustrations by Esme Shapiro and quirky, deadpan dialogue by Kyo Maclear. This is a story told in three parts (almost like a chapter/picture book) about two friends, Yak and Dove, who are opposites in temperment and personality, but the most bosom of friends. Even when they don't always agree with one another or have falling outs, their friendship always perseveres due to a mutual sense of love and respect, as well as constant dialogue. I'd re ...more

Yak and Dove are terrific friends that appreciate their differences and their similarities. Sometimes friends don't always get along, and these two have their moments. Young readers will get a kick out of reading about Yak's auditions for a new best friend. The book is divided into three sections or chapters with warm, cheerful illustrations. This would be a terrific book to share with young readers as a way to celebrate great friendships.

Yak and Dove are best friends, even though they are very different. However, they start wondering if they can be friends if they are so different. They wish they were twins and that leads to a hiccup in their friendship. Then Marmot volunteers to help Yak find a new friend...only Yak isn't too sure his methods are successful. With their friendship restored, Dove helps Yak with his unconventional gardening.

This looks like a typical picture book but reads more like a leveled reader with three stor

Thank you to NetGalley and Tundra Books for providing me with an advance copy to read and review.

This book was hilarious from start to finish! Yak and Dove had such a great concept and pretty illustrations.

It’s divided into three stories and is all dialogue, which I found refreshing. The font is distinguished enough between each character’s voice to easily follow along. I liked that this book was longer than the standard for picture books – I think the story would have had less of an impact if i

'Yak and Dove' by Kyo Maclear with illustrations by Esme Shapiro is a series of three short stories about two unlikely friends.

In 'If We Were Twins' has Dove wondering what it would be like if Yak and Dove were twins. It starts out sweet, and devolves into typical sibling infighting. After their fallout, 'The Audition' has Yak looking for a replacement friend. Many animals audition, but there is only one who is perfect for Yak. The final story is 'Yak and Quiet,' where Yak grows a quiet garden,

Yak and Dove are two unlikely friends. Dove wishes they were twins and perhaps this would make them closer and more alike. After a temporary parting Yak and Dove realize that by digging deeper than aesthetic similarities they have more in common than they originally thought.

Yak and Dove is broken into three sections. I could not grasp the transition between the first section and the second. I thought it was a whole new story but it was a continuation. Coming upon the third section I understood

This picture book offers three stories about an unlikely friendship between a yak and a dove. The story focuses on the banter between the two animals as they discuss such things as what if they were twins, what makes a best friend, and what's the best way to plant a garden. Their dialogue reminds me of the George and Martha books by James Marshall.

I would recommend this book to read to children to learn more about tolerance and empathy. Even though Yak and Dove have a lot of differences, the mo
