William Blake is a poet without parallel, who remains a source of wisdom and inspiration to countless individuals throughout the world.

This selection was commissioned in 1905 by the firm of George Routledge from W.B. Yeats, who had previously been one of the pioneer editors of Blake's prophetic books. Yeats, one of the few poets whose work could be compared with that of Bl

Blake's beautiful lyric poetry is astoundingly profound and pleasing to the ear, when read aloud. Although I have yet to read his longer prophetic works, I must say that the earlier Songs are deserving of much more attention than they have already garnered. Superficial analyses of the false dichotomy between innocence and experience betray the far deeper understanding of humanity, sexuality, and the ambiguity of identity which is so marvelously showcased in Blake's "simpler" works.

Earth rais'd up her head,
From the darkness dread & drear.
Her light fled:
Stony dread!
And her locks cover'd with grey despair.

Prison'd on watry shore
Starry Jealousy does keep my den
Cold and hoar
Weeping o'er
I hear the Father of the ancient men

Selfish father of men
Cruel, jealous, selfish fear
Can delight
Chain'd in night
The virgins of youth and morning bear.

Does spring hide its joy
When buds and blossoms grow?
Does the sower?
Sow by night?
Or the plowman in darkness plow?

make sure you get the one edited by W.B. Yeats. just do it!

I read this after being reminded of Blake during a recent trip to Brazil. I liked Blake in college, but I was more impressed with his drawings and obsession with symmetry than his poetry, which is pretty simple and kind of singsong. There are a few gems in this collection, in particular the Proverbs section of the Auguries of the Innocence. But this is only gonn get two stars from me if I'm honest. which i am.

I think W.B. Yeats did an outstanding job in both the introduction and the annotation of this collection of poems. Of course Blake is brilliant, prophetic and at times insane; his poetry is simple and beautiful and Yeats' understanding of him only magnifies these qualities. This book is a good choice if you're starting with Blake, it leaves out some things that I wished had been included but what would a "collection" be if a few of us didn't end up being marginally disappointed.

William Blake was an English poet, painter, and printmaker. Largely unrecognised during his lifetime, Blake's work is today considered seminal and significant in the history of both poetry and the visual arts.

Blake's prophetic poetry has been said to form "what is in proportion to its merits the least read body of poetry in the language". His visual artistry has led one modern critic to proclaim h
