Ho iniziato a leggere questo libro perché obbligata da mio figlio, ma l'ho rimesso via più o meno a metà lettura. Le religioni abramitiche non mi piacciono quindi non catturano il mio interesse. L'introduzione è interessante, soprattutto la parte dedicata alla vita di Maometto, ma quando venivano nominati concetti religiosi non riuscivo a mantenere la concentrazione perché sono cose in cui non credo.
So già parecchie cose sull'Islam perché mio figlio, mio mentore, me ne ha parlato a lungo mentre leggeva il Corano. Ascoltare mio figlio che me ne parlava è stato sicuramente più stimolante e interessante perché riusciva a catturare la mia attenzione e ne potevamo discutere scambiandoci opinioni.
Non do stelline perché è colpa mia se non l'ho finito. Il libro non ha nulla che non va.

I leave this book halfway because it doesn't capture my interest. I don't like Abrahamic religions so it was hard to read about things in which I don't believe.
I liked some parts of the introduction, above all those dedicated to Muhammad's life, but when it came to religious concepts, I had really a hard time and I was bored to death.
I started this book because obliged by my son but I'm not able to finish it. At least I already know enough about Islam. My son has read the Quran and we have always talked a lot about it. I prefer my son that explains me Islam because he makes everything interesting and we can share opinions.
I don't rate the book because it's my fault if I wasn't able to finish it. The book has nothing wrong.

ইসলাম ধর্মের সর্বশেষ নবী হযরত মুহাম্মদ ﷺ - এর জীবন আমাদের জন্য আদর্শ, অনুসরণীয়। আল্লাহ্ তাঁকে ﷺ সর্বশ্রেষ্ঠ কিতাব দিয়ে মানবজাতির কাছে পাঠিয়েছেন। আজ নবুওয়তের প্রায় ১৫০০ বছর পরেও সারাবিশ্বের ধর্মপ্রাণ মুসলিমেরা নবীজীর ﷺ দেখানো পথে আল্লাহর ইবাদত করছে।

মহানবী ﷺ শুধু একজন ধর্মীয় নেতা কিংবা শেষ নবী নন, বরং সারা বিশ্বের মানুষের জন্য একজন আদর্শ। তাইতো নবীজীর ﷺ দেখানো পথ, আদর্শ, চিন্তাভাবনা সবকিছুই আলোচিত হয়।

পশ্চিমা দেশে ইসলামকে অনেকটাই ভিন্ন চোখে দেখা হয়। অনেকের ইসলাম ধর্ম কিংবা নবীজী ﷺ এর জীবন কাহিনি নিয়ে আছে নানা মত। আবার অমুসলিম লোকেরা ইসলামকে অনেকভাবেই গুলিয়ে ফেলে।

কিন্তু নবীজীর ﷺ জীবন, ইসলাম প্রচার, এবং এরজন্য করা ত্যাগের ঘটনা গুলো সকলের জন্যই অনুকরণীয়। বিশ্বাস এবং ঈমানের জোরে নবীজী ﷺ মুসলিম বিশ্বের নেতা হিসেবে পরিণত হয়েছিলেন। তবুও নবীজীর ﷺ নিরহঙ্কার চরিত্র, বৈশিষ্ট্য মানুষ হিসেবে সবাইকেই আকৃষ্ট করে।


ভাবতে পারেন সেই কোন দূর দেশ রাশিয়ার এক বিখ্যাত লেখক লিও তলস্তয়। জীবনের শেষ মুহূর্তে তার পকেটে পাওয়া গেল ছোট্ট একটা বই। সেই বইতে লেখা সর্বশ্রেষ্ঠ সেই মানবের মুখের কথা, জীবনবোধ, নীতি। দূর দেশের সেই লেখকের পকেটে কেন আসলো এমন এক বই?

এর উত্তর খুঁজতে খুঁজতে আমরা দেখি নবীজী ﷺ কেন অনুকরণীয় একজন আদর্শ?

জীবনের ৪০ বছর অতিবাহিত করার পর তিনি হেরা গুহায় ধ্যানমগ্ন থাকা অবস্থায় পেলেন আল্লাহর ওহী। এমন একটা সময় যখন মক্কা জর্জরিত পাপে, শিরকে। পূর্ববর্তী নবীদের দেখানো পথ ভুলে আবার গুনাহের পথে পা বাড়ানো মানুষেরা পেয়েছিল এমন এক নেতা যার মাধ্যমে জাহেলী যুগের অবসান হয়।

ঈমানী শক্তি, আল্লাহর প্রতি বিশ্বাস, উম্মতের প্রতি অসীম ভালোবাসা, করণীয় আর বর্জনীয় কাজের সম্পর্কে জানানো সহ নবীজী ﷺ সকল দিকে আল্লাহর দেখানো পথে চলার এক অপূর্ব সুন্দর দিকনির্দেশনা দিয়ে গেছেন।

ক্ষুধার্তের প্রতি ধনীদের হক, পরিবারের হক, আত্মীয়ের হক, সুদ, ঘুষ, জুয়া সকল কিছু থেকে বিরত থাকার পথ দেখিয়েছেন মুহাম্মদ ﷺ ।
নবীজীর ﷺ জীবনে দেখানো সকল পথ, বাণী ছিল কুরআনের আলোকে। আল্লাহর দেয়া ওহীকেই নবী ﷺ তৎকালীন এবং পরবর্তী যুগের উম্মতের জন্য রেখে গেছেন। আমরা সেই পথ ধরেই এগিয়ে যাচ্ছি।

নবী ﷺ জীবনের প্রতিটি দিক সম্পর্কে উম্মতকে জানিয়ে গেছেন। এই যেমন দান সম্পর্কে বলেছেন,

❛প্রতিটি ভালো কাজই দান❜
(সুনান আবু দাউদ)

পবিত্রতা সম্পর্কে বলেছেন,

❛লজ্জাশীলতা ও পবিত্রতা ঈমানের অংশ।❜
(ইবনে মাজাহ)

নবীজীর ﷺ বলা অনেক বাণী আছে আমরা যুগে যুগে শুনে আসছি। আবার দেখা গেল আজীবন যে হাদীস শুনে এসেছি তার মধ্যে অনেকগুলোই ভুল কিংবা সরাসরি এর উল্লেখ নেই।

এই যেমন আমরা কে-ই বা জানিনা এই উক্তিটি,

❛জ্ঞানার্জনের জন্য পারলে চীনদেশেও যাও।❜

আপনি জানেন কি এটি একটি প্রসিদ্ধ জাল হাদিস। এরকম বহু বিষয়ে নবীজীর ﷺ বলা সহীহ হাদীস এবং নিত্যদিনের কথপোকথনের মধ্যেই তিনি আমাদের দ্বীনের শিক্ষা দিয়েছেন। তাঁর ﷺ বলা অনেকগুলো কথা যেমন প্রসিদ্ধ, প্রমাণ আছে। তেমনি আছে দুর্বল হাদিস কিংবা সন্দেহ আছে এমন কিছু বাণী।

নবীজী ﷺ বান্দার জন্য রেখে গেছেন এক উত্তম জীবনব্যবস্থা। যা আমাদের দুনিয়ার লোভকে সংযত করতে এবং পরকালের অনন্ত জীবনের প্রতি বিশ্বাস রাখতে শেখায়।

কাউকে ছোটো করে দেখা কিংবা নিজেকে বড় ভাবতে যেমন মানা আছে, তেমনি আছে সহজ সরল জীবনের নির্দেশিকা।
মুসলিম বিশ্বের নেতা হয়েও নবীজী ﷺ যে অনাড়ম্বর জীবন যাপন করেছে বান্দা হিসেবে আমাদেরও সেই পথ অনুসরণ করা উচিত।
নির্যা তিতের ব্যাপারে যেমনি আছে দয়ার বাণী, তেমনি নি র্যাতনকারীকে সাবধান হওয়ার ব্যাপারেও সতর্কতা আছে।

স্ত্রী, নারী কিংবা পরিবারের ব্যাপারেও আছে নির্দেশিকা। কন্যা সন্তান পালনের যে ফজিলত রয়েছে নবীজীর ﷺ বাণীতে এসেছে সে কথাও।

দুনিয়া, আখিরাত, ইহকাল বিষয়ক আল্লাহর বাণী উঠে এসেছে মহানবীর ﷺ বলা হাদীসে। আর এগুলোর বিষয়ভিত্তিক সংকলন বই আকারে স্থান পেয়েছিল রুশ সেই বিখ্যাত লেখকের পকেটে।

লেখকের নাম দেখে খুব পরিচিত লাগছে না? আরো অবাক করা ব্যাপার বইটির লেখক একজন সুজলা সুফলা দেশের বাসিন্দা। যার জন্মস্থান ঢাকায়!

অবাক হওয়ার মাত্রা এজন্যই আরো বেড়ে যায় ঢাকায় জন্ম নেয়া লেখকের বই রুশ রেলস্টেশনে কী করে গেল?

জানা যায় ঢাকার এই লেখকের সাথে পত্র যোগাযোগ ছিল লিও তলস্তয়ের। সেই সুবাদেই মহানবীকে ﷺ নিয়ে লেখা বইটি পাওয়া গেছিল মৃ ত্যুশয্যায় তার পকেটে। ব্যাপারটি নিশ্চিত করেছিল তার পরিবার।

আর হ্যাঁ, এই সোহরাওয়ার্দীর ভাগ্নেই আমাদের সেই বিখ্যাত হোসেন শহীদ সোহরাওয়ার্দী।

সেসময় পশ্চিমা সমাজে ইসলাম ধর্মের দৃষ্টিভঙ্গিকে বদলে দিতে কিংবা প্রচলিত ভুল ধারনাকে পাল্টে দেয়ার প্রয়াস ছিল বইটি। মুসলিম শব্দটি সে সময় প্রচলিত ছিল না।
লোকে মুসলিমদের ❛মোহামেডান❜ বলে ডাকতো। মোহাম্মদ নাম থেকে যার আগমন।

বইটিতে লেখক প্রায় সাড়ে চারশ (যদিও আমার পড়া অনুবাদে ঠাঁই পেয়েছে ৪৩৯ টি হাদিস। মূল ইংলিশে ৪৫১ টি হাদিসের কথা উল্লেখ আছে শুনেছি।) হাদিসের সমন্বয় করেছেন। বইটি ১৯৩৮ সালে মহাত্মা গান্ধীর ভূমিকা সহ পুনরায় প্রকাশ হয়।

হাদীস সংকলন পড়তে গেলে এর শুদ্ধতা এবং উৎস নিয়ে যাচাই বাছাইয়ের বিষয় থাকে। লেখক মূলত অমুসলিমের কাছে ইসলাম ধর্মকে ব্যাখ্যা এবং আমাদের শ্রেষ্ঠ মানবের জীবনের দিকগুলোকে তুলে ধরেছেন।
শুধু নবীজীর ﷺ মুখের বাণী তুলে দিয়েই ক্ষান্ত হননি তিনি। শুরু করেছেন মরু বালকের থেকে তিনি কিভাবে আল-আমিন হয়ে উঠলেন তার সংক্ষিপ্ত ইতিহাস। বাদ যায়নি আল্লাহর ওহী নাযিলের ঘটনা থেকে তাঁর ওফাতের ঘটনাও। সংক্ষিপ্ত কিন্তু একজন নতুন ব্যক্তির কাছে বোধগম্য করে তোলার যথেষ্ঠ ব্যাখ্যা ছিল বইতে।

বইটির সবথেকে দারুণ দিক বিষয়ভিত্তিক ভাবে নবীজীর ﷺ বাণীগুলোকে উপস্থাপন। ইসলামের বিধি নিষেধ, সৌন্দর্য, বিবেক, সুদ খাওয়া, আত্মীয়ের অধিকার, মৃ তদের জন্য করণীয়, দান সদকা, নিজেকে নিয়ন্ত্রণ, জীবিকা নির্বাহ, কন্যার প্রতি দায়িত্ব, স্ত্রীলোকের করণীয় এবং তাদের প্��তি দায়িত্ব, দুনিয়ার জীবনযাপনের করণীয় এবং বর্জনীয় সকল বিষয়কে আলাদাভাবে লেখক তুলে ধরেছেন। এতে বিষয়ভিত্তিকভাবে হাদিসগুলো জানতে সুবিধা হয়েছে।
অল্প সময়ে নবীজীর ﷺ বাণী জানতে এবং দরকারের সময় সেগুলো দেখে নিতে বইটি বেশ সহায়ক।


অনুবাদ:

বইটির বাংলা অনুবাদ এসেছে প্রায় ১১৫ বছর পর। মূল বইটির ইংলিশ সে সময়কার আমলের ধরনের লেখা। লেখকের মূলভাব বজায় রেখে অনুবাদক আব্দুল্লাহ ইবনে মাহমুদ বেশ সুপাঠ্যভাবে বইটির ভাষান্তর করেছেন।

শুধুমাত্র বাংলা করেই তিনি দায়িত্ব ছেড়ে দেননি। বইটিতে উল্লিখিত হাদিসগুলোর সত্যতা, উৎস উল্লেখ করে দিয়েছেন। বর্তমান যুগে জাল হাদিসের অভাব নেই। আর সেই প্রযুক্তিহীন যুগে সহীহ শুদ্ধ হাদিসের শুদ্ধ সংকলন সম্ভব নয়। সে দিক থেকে অনুবাদক প্রতিটি হাদিসের উৎস দিয়েছেন, না মিললে কাছাকাছি হাদিসের উল্লেখ করেছেন। আর যেসব পাওয়া যায়নি তারও পয়েন্ট আউট করেছেন। অনুবাদকের সংযোজন এসেছে। বইটি পড়ার আগে সতর্ক বাণীও দিতে ভোলেননি।
তিনি তার কাজে সফল।



প্রচ্ছদ, প্রোডাকশন:


ছিমছাম প্রচ্ছদটা বেশ সুন্দর।

বইটি মেলায় এসেছিল। আমার মনে হয়েছে মেলার তাড়া বইটির মধ্যে সুস্পষ্ট। সম্পাদনার ঘাটতি রয়ে গেছে। যুক্তাক্ষর সমস্যা দেখেছি অনেক জায়গায়। ❛Ear❜ শব্দটা টাইপো হয়ে ❛Car❜ হিসেবে এসেছিল। এমন বেশ কিছু ঘাটতি লক্ষ্য করা গেছে।
এগুলো শুধরে নিলে বইটি পাঠকের কাছে আরো গ্রহণযোগ্য হবে।

Randomly হাদিস পড়লে আমার কিছু মনে থাকে না। তাই আমি খুঁজে খুঁজে যেখানে সব বিষয়ভিত্তিকভাবে সাজানো থাকে ওখান থেকে পড়ি। ওভারঅল একটা ধারণা হয় ঐ ব্যাপারে। কিন্ত এটা অন্যরকম। নির্বাচিত কিছু হাদিসের সংকলন। এই বইয়ের সন্ধান প্রথম পেয়েছিলাম হুমায়ূন আহমেদের থেকে। তলস্তয়ের মৃত্যুর পর তার কোটের পকেটে পাওয়া ছোট্ট বইটার কথাগুলো সব যে বুঝি তা না,কিন্ত সব বোঝার তৃষ্ণা আমার মরুভূমির মতো। এই বছর ধর্ম নিয়েই যাক।

This is the book when the world famous Russian writer Leo Tolostoy died was found in his pocket which he was fond of. However, the book in general talks about some of the saying of the prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) but before that an introduction was portrayed by the writer to give better understand to those who were given the negative image about what Islam is. Despite the presence of very small percentage of the unauthentic sayings of the prophet (peace be upon him), the writer nicely managed to present the sayings of the prophet in the book as a whole.

This book seems to have been originally published back in 1941, based on the date of the preface. It includes a foreword written by Mahatma Gandhi dated 1938. The introduction is a brief 30 pages with concise information on the purpose of the collection as well as a layperson's history of Muhammad and Islam.

I found the introduction quite useful as it is more concise and easier to understand than the other, more academically oriented, book on the same topics I am reading. It motivated me to keep reading the other book. The sayings are arranged by topic and are quick to read. Many are inspiring and informative.

This was a quick introduction to a broad overview of Muhammad and, to a lesser extent, Islam, which made me want to learn more.

I found the small book, “The Sayings of Muhammad”, to be of considerable interest. Muhammad was surely a man who was driven a great deal by the Spirit of the Creator of the universe. His legacy has been a powerful inspiration for many millions of Muslims, as well as numerous other people. However, I am unprepared to argue that the magnitude of the veneration accorded to Muhammad by many of his followers is duly placed. Worshiping human beings, worshiping humanly written books, or worshiping the works of human endeavors is always a form of idolatry – whether the idolaters are Muslims, Jews, Christians, Hindus, Buddhists, or those of any other tradition.

The Almighty has spoken – and does speak – through many human agents, but it becomes problematic when human beings ascribe to such agents divinity or regard the teachings or writings of such agents as infallible or sacred. Human beings are highly finite, and their insights, teachings, and writings are all beset with human fallibilities and flaws. Nevertheless, some such spiritual teachers can powerfully encourage and inspire many people to seek the most precious status possible for a human being – harmony with the Divine. Muhammad was among those teachers, notwithstanding the fact that numerous people have been misguidedly motivated to use hatred and violence in his name and supposedly in accordance with his teachings. This is infinitely tragic.

I will quote briefly from a footnote on page 55 of the book under review:

“In the Kur’an, animal life stands on the same footing as human life in the sight of God. ‘There is no beast on earth,’ says the Kur’an ‘nor bird which flieth with wings, but the same is a people like unto you (mankind)—and to the Lord shall they return.’”

I find this verse to be intriguing, but I simultaneously find it simply incongruent with Muslim practices – eating beef, lamb, and certain other animals for food. The same critique would be directed at Christians and Jews.

On page 58, I find a statement attributed to Muhammad: “Charity that is concealed appeaseth the wrath of God [I use the exact spelling as given in this translation of the sayings of Muhammad]”.

In the margin of my copy of the book, I wrote: “Why is God regarded as wrathful?” I have no doubt that God’s displeasure at rank evil can – in some sense – be regarded as wrathful, but I fear that too many devout theists have perpetrated an outlook of a Creator who holds a wrathful stance toward His creation. Is this justified? I think not.

Here’s a quotation from page 72: “When asked to mention one of the most excellent parts of Iman (faith) Muhammad said, ‘To love him who loveth God, and hate him who hateth God, and to keep your tongue employed in repeating the name of God….”
In the margin of my copy, I noted a contrast between the above quotation and Jesus’ instructions to us to LOVE our enemies – which presumably would include love for those who hate God.

In summary, let me say that I regard this small volume to be a worthwhile read for a spiritual seeker – one who passionately aims toward union with the Almighty Creator.

I have read Sir Abdullah Suhrawardy’s collections of the sayings of the Prophet with much interest and profit. They are among the treasures of mankind, not merely Muslims.

I am a believer in the truth of all the great religions of the world. There will be no lasting peace on earth unless we learn not merely to tolerate but even to respect the other faiths as our own. A reverent study of the sayings of the different teachers of mankind is a step in the direction of such mutual respect.

I became interested in this collection mainly due to the foreword by Gandhi in the 2004 Goodword edition along with the introduction that elaborates on this along with a biographical sketch of the collector, Suhrawardy.

Gandhi’s foreword is a concise but beautiful statement on the benefit of learning from all religions and it specifically interested me to know that this collection of hadith, (teachings of Muhammad), is what Gandhi himself read and drew inspiration from.

I did not see the foreword included in the online version, but the hadith are listed here, organized alphabetically by topic, as they are in the book. This format allows a person to easily find and skip to the subject desired and read the hadith listed. What is not so accessible is the English language, as the translation employs a classical style and is too verbose. References are also not provided, so it is challenging for the reader to determine the source of a given hadith or to be able to compare with an alternate translation.

Otherwise, the value of the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad are self-evident once the reader can move past the style of the language and start to digest the content. In my view, given the significance of this collection to one of the world’s greatest modern heroes, a fresh accessible translation with references would be widely appreciated.

লিও তলস্তয় এর মৃত্যুর পর উনার কোটের পকেট থেকে একটা বই পাওয়া যায়। যা ছিল মূলত হযরত মুহাম্মদ (স.) এর বাণী সম্বলিত একটি বই। এই তথ্যটি অামরা অনেকেই জানি। কিন্তু যা জানি না তা হল, সেই বইয়ের লেখক ছিলেন ঢাকায় জন্ম নেওয়া একজন বাংলাদেশি।

উপমহাদেশের প্রখ্যাত মুসলিম মনীষী স্যার অাল্লামা অাবদুল্লাহ অাল মামুন সুহরাওয়ার্দির জন্ম ১৮৭৭ খ্রিস্টাব্দের ৩১ মে ঢাকায়। তিনি ছিলেন ঢাকা মাদ্রাসার প্রতিষ্ঠাতা সুপারিন্টেনডেন্ট মাওলানা উবায়েদুল্লাহ উবায়দী সুহরাওয়ার্দির চতুর্থ পুত্র।

Very interesting. Hard to reconcile the sayings in this book with the terrorists on the evening news.
