A alma.

My favourite book by Wislawa up to now. Simple, clear, beautiful. Makes you think. Captures the moment. Her thoughts deny the absolute reply, the dogmas, the fundamentalisms. She questions everything, and, at the same time, she celebrates this doubts, this moments of pure happiness, this big question that's life.

I wish I knew Polish to be able to read her originals. The translation isn't bad but... It's poetry. And poetry is unstranlatable. Maybe one day I'll learn how to speak it? Or at least

Szymborska on maailman hienoimpia runoilijoita.

The Three Oddest Words

When I pronounce the word Future,
the first syllable already belongs to the past.

When I pronounce the word Silence,
I destroy it.

When I pronounce the word Nothing,
I make something no nonbeing can hold.

As always the poems of Mrs. Szymborska are very beautiful and nicely translated into English.

As usual

Sou quem sou.
Um acaso inconcebível
como todos os acasos.

Outros antepassados
poderiam, afinal, ser os meus,
e então de outro ninho
sairia voando,

Eu tampouco tive alternativa,
mas não me queixo.

elke dag leger, elke dag zwaarder.

I don't know. I read Here a few years ago and was blown away. I'm not sure why this collection just never takes off. It feels STUCK in the moment, not just of the moment. Obviously, I'm reading in translation. Something might be lost. But these poems feel like all veneer. And even in translation, the language isn't particularly poetic. I know that the poet's style is straightforward and economical---but the poems here just feel flat and dull as pennies.

A collection of poems full of ocular nostalgia and material presence.

"Everything -
a bumptious, stuck-up word.
It should be written in quotes.
It pretends to miss nothing,
to gather, hold, contain, and have.
While all the while it's just
a shred of gale."

Wisława Szymborska (Polish pronunciation: [vʲisˈwava ʂɨmˈbɔrska], born July 2, 1923 in Kórnik, Poland) is a Polish poet, essayist and translator. She was awarded the 1996 Nobel Prize in Literature. In Poland, her books reach sales rivaling prominent prose authors—although she once remarked in a poem entitled "Some like poetry" [Niektórzy lubią poezję] that no more than two out of a thousand people ...more
