Captain Scruffy is one of the Rainbow Scarecrows and in this charming and delightfully illustrated little adventure he rescues three young rabbits who were being swept by the current towards certain destruction under the waterwheel.
It all began as days usually did with Captain Scruffy clearing up rubbish left in the countryside by visitors. He commented, 'I am fed up with doing this awful job. I wish people would take their litter home with them!' Amongst the rubbish that morning was a book about pirates and Scruffy decided that he would like to be a pirate.
He told the other Rainbow Scarecrows about his desire and, as it was soon to be his birthday, they all gave him different parts of a pirate costume as presents. Scruffy was overjoyed and went down to the river to practise at being a pirate and to his surprise when he got there he discovered an old rowing boat that the other scarecrows had done up for him as a pirate ship.
He sailed up and down the river and that is when he spotted the three young rabbits in distress. He went to their rescue and by inventive means managed to get them on board his pirate ship and they were saved from a watery grave.
That evening Scruffy had a party down by the river and during it Scarecrow Norah decided to give swimming lessons the following day ... and the three little rabbits were first in the queue! A lovely little story.
