He left an arm behind in Fallujah, but he'll tear apart anyone who threatens his mate.
Briggs Dawson was just trying to lay low. After gaining national attention as the first and only Bear Shifter drafted into a professional football league, he left amid swarming controversy. He decided to serve his country and went overseas, returning as one of the many wounded. Now, just as he's trying to adjust to being a civilian, his past and his future collide.
Katrina Crawford wanted to get help for her brother Toby, but there was only so much you could do. You could drag a horse to rehab but you couldn't make him work the program, as the saying went. With her lab working her overtime coming up with a prototype prosthetic, the little fights with Toby about his lack of sobriety were all that was keeping her sane.
Before either of them know it, their world is turned upside down and they're forced to fight for their lives and their love!
This 50,000+ word novel has hot Bear Shifter action, a Happily Ever After, no cheating and no cliffhangers! I've attached some free stories afterward as my thanks to you.

This was a great story about some of the harsh realities of life - abuse, addiction, PTSD, discrimination... Although set in a shifter world, I felt Ms. Fanning did an awesome job putting us in touch with just how hard it is to make a life in certain situations and how to find the strength to accept help to have a successful life. I was gifted a complimentary copy of this book for an honest review and I loved it! If you love action, drama, suspense, hot love and hope, this is a great book to go on your TBR list!
This is a voluntary review of an advanced copy. Battle Scarred by Becca Fanning is a shifter romance with a happy ever after ending. In this book we are introduced to three main characters: Kat, Briggs and Kat’s twin brother Toby. Toby has been out on the streets for a while doing drugs and it’s left him homeless so his sister, Kat, takes him and is letting him crash on her couch as long as he goes to meetings for people like him who are in recovery or wanting to do better with their lives. He’s reluctant to go to this first meeting but he goes and there he meets Briggs who’s just as down on his luck. Briggs had been looking forward to a successful career in football when it was all taken away so he joins the Marines but suffers more loss including his arm. Kat is very career driven and so focused on her job but when a situation arises that she didn’t see coming she now needs Briggs help or else she’ll lose it all. This is the first book that I’ve read by Becca Fanning but I really enjoyed it. I liked how she introduces us to the siblings Kat and Toby first before really introducing us to Briggs and letting us learn about the whole situation that has happened with him. All of the characters each have their own problems that they are dealing with: Kat, a relationship what went bad, Toby – a past that he’s trying to move forward from and Briggs – accepting help that he desperately needs and allowing love into his heart again. But there is more with another threat that is against shifters and wants them gone. But if they can all come together with some help from others then they just might be able to overcome it all. I really do like the various elements that are presented in this story but what I don’t really like is how quickly they seem to fall in love with each other. In other shifter stories that I’ve read there is a connection that the shifter feels towards their mate and it forms a bond but there really wasn’t any of that in this story. Yes, there is attraction because Kat needs Briggs for her work but there isn’t the spark of recognition that I’m so familiar with. So when they have only spent a couple days together and then are wanting to start saying “I love you” it just seems a bit too fast and not as believable. All in all the story is very well written and as stated before has a happily ever after ending not just for Briggs and Kat but for her brother Toby as well which I really appreciated it. I’m glad to say that there was only one spelling error that I came across so I really liked that this story was carefully edited and reviewed before being put out there. For this book even though I felt it was a bit flawed in the romance I still really enjoyed it and the steady pace that it has so I give this book 5 out of 5 stars. I enjoyed it overall and it kept me engaged to the end with the different dynamics and the troubles that they were facing both individually and collectively. I will most definitely be reading more of Becca Fanning’s work in the future and recommend her work to anyone who is a fan of paranormal romance stories especially those with a happy ending.
It is a little different than the other paranormal romances from the author. It is very focused on the female character's career as a scientist working on developing life-like limbs for those who have lost their arms and legs.
Kat is very devoted to her work and likes her life nice and orderly. Her twin brother is the opposite. He is a recovering drug addict who is fine with some messiness. She encourages him to stay sober and he tries to lighter her up.
Briggs is a bear shifter who lost his sports career when he was outed as a shifter. His fiance stole all his money. He ended up in the military and lost his arm in battle. Briggs is out of the military and living in his car when he meets Kat and her brother.
They are drawn to each other and it works out for her career too as she needs someone to test the product. There are some complications to them being together including her job and her ex. They face some danger too.
There is a lot going on in the story. I liked Briggs. He was a fighter and had worked hard to recover from his losses. He didn't blame others. Kat is a little harder to understand. She is not as open about her feelings.
BATTLE SCARRED is a stand-alone paranormal romance with a happily ever after ending.
One of the things that I really liked about this story was that our heroine, Kat, is the strongest character. The two main men, Briggs, her love interest, and Toby, her twin brother, have been homeless and defeated by life in general. Kat’s weakness, while she is compassionate, is that she is not as emotional as you would expect a woman to be. Life has made her hard. She would probably say she is just a realist.
I love that the growing relationships between these three characters (and Kat’s boss) softens all of them and makes them better people.
Heart-warming and captivating, I couldn’t put it down. Even though it touches on many difficult subjects – PTSD, discrimination, drug abuse, and stalking – it was never depressing or exceedingly frightening. Instead, it was enjoyable and hope filled.
Note: while I was given this book as a gifted ARC, my opinions are my own and are given freely.
Title: BATTLE SCARRED Series: N/A Category /Genre: Paranormal Romance, Contemporary Recommended for: 18+ due to sexual content Grammar/editing: book received as an unedited ARC / errors excused Received from: Becca Fanning (as an ARC gifted copy)
This story was a little different in the story line. Briggs is a shifter that is facing some hard times after serving in the military. He is trying to pick up the pieces of his life and move forward. There is just one little problem, he is facing an uphill battle of being wounded and homeless at the same time. The last thing he needs is to try and start a relationship with someone.
Katrina on the other hand is a young woman who is trying to help her brother. Little does she know that there is someone at this most recent meeting is going to not only change her brothers life, but hers as well. She is a young woman that is trying to help hold the pieces together in her life. Katrina is working hard to make sure that her bills are paid and she is taking care of things. The last thing she needs right now is to start a relationship/
Life however, has different plans for these two people. They are both going to have to face their demons, decide what is important, and make sure that they are working to what they really and truly need. The question becomes can these two people fight for what the need and want to have the most in this life.
What a fantastic story, very well written, the author really made me feel each scene between Kat and Briggs, there was real feelings in details of the descriptions of what actually does occur with some veterans. The story itself is very heartwarming and interesting, so much depth in the men portrayed as the characters. Kat is a very strong and independent woman who thought her job was what made her whole and happy, but finding Briggs has made her question everything.
I believe this is Becca Fannings best written book I have read of hers. It's a must read book, I couldn't put it down till I finished it. PNR Fans are gonna love it.
I voluntarily read and reviewed this book by the author. Reviewer for Nook Books and More Blog
Kat's career hinges on being able to find a shifter to run a trial on for her new artificial arm. She needs Briggs, a Bear shifter who lost his arm while serving in the Marines. Briggs also happens to be her mate, but the plot didn't dwell on that. Briggs, the arm prototype and Kat are all endangered by an anti-shifter group, the Human Defense Force.
The story touches on abuse, addiction and PTSD - all in a way that doesn't make light of such difficult topics.
I really enjoyed this story and hope to read more about these characters in other books.
I received an advanced reader copy of this book and voluntarily provided this honest review.
Kat is an inventor with a breakthrough in prosthetic technology but to make it just right she needs shifter and ex marine Briggs Dawson. He is now homeless after a rising career in football stomped and then a disabling attack as a marine. He meets Kat's brother Toby in a community help center. Kat needs him to fix her problem and he does't need anybody's help. Together they work together and fight together. It is a sometimes heartbreaking story dealing with crazy exes, shifter discrimination, drug abuse rehabilitation and finally love. It's a great story. It starts a little slow but the pace gets exciting along the way. It is also a story about hope and strength and courage.
They are not all veteran related stories, they are all bear shifter stories. The tales are good, however the author needs to have a good proofreader go over these and correct the missing words, the extra words, the misused words, as it's very annoying to have your enjoyment in the book to run up against one of these very obvious errors that kill the flow.
Katrina works for a company making prosthesis for amputees, but they are forbidden to have human trials. Briggs, a bear shifter, who lost his right arm whilst injured as a Marine. Katrina talks Briggs into allowing her to help him, along the way they have to fight for their HEA.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
I am sitting in my car, supposed to be dropping my brother off at the meeting for recovering addicts, and not allowing him to say no, not anymore. We are twins, and I know he has been clean and sober, and also fallen back into the trap of drugs and alcohol. But if he intends on staying with me, then he is going to these meetings. That is my only condition for allowing him to live with me. He goes inside, and I wait a few minutes to make sure he doesn't just sneak right back out. Seeing he didn't I head to where I feel most alive. My lab, my place of work. I excel here. Poor Kat...you know the old saying, all work and no play.... However Kat is not concerned with the no play part. She has been through hell while she was with her ex of 4 years.
I am a shell of who I used to be. I live on the street now, I no longer have a career, a place to live, no money. That was not always the case. I was a professional football player, I had money, a fiancee and a great home. But since I am a shifter, the league won't allow me to play with humans in fear of us harming them, so there went my career. Then I came home to find my fiancee sold my place and took my money. I was also a Marine, and this injury of mine caused that part of my life to be over too. I am going into this meeting. I am not involved in drugs or with alcohol. No my need for this meeting is deeper....As I am greeted I tell them "My name is Briggs" and again everyone knows my name and look at me with suspicion and disbelief. What they don't know though.
As Briggs is getting a donut and heading into the meeting, he meets Troy (this happens to be Kat's twin brother) and feels a little bit of a friendly connection to him. Troy doesn't judge him, and asks why he is there. For the first time in what seems like an eternity Briggs opens up about his real reason for being at the meeting. Is this from his war injury? What is his war injury? When the meeting ends, and the two are walking outside, Kat is waiting for Troy. He introduces Briggs to Kat. Both are intrigued with one another, but for different reasons.
Kat is a specialist (for lack of a better term) and is currently working on a prototype that will start her career. But she has hit a snag in that road, she didn't follow the rules completely, and now her prototype will not be able to be used....on a human. When she is introduced to Briggs she notices his predicament. She goes over the rules and this prototype can not be tested on humans, it doesn't mention shifters. She pitches this to her boss, who is completely skeptical at first, but allows this experiment to move forward. She talks to Briggs and offers him this information. He is willing to try this, but not because he needs it....nope this he is doing for her. The pull for him is that strong.
This brings up feelings, and Kat is a bit gun shy in this department (and she has reasons to be.) Things get a little heated, then cooled by Kat. Briggs still is willing to help her out. NOW things start to really spark up. There is also a few things happening in the background too. Let's just say the background "noises" are happening at the same time and the spark is showing up. Big things happen. Does this draw these two closer together or break them apart? Can there really be something between these two for a great romance? Can there be more than a business relationship that buds? Hmmm, I know the answer to this but unless you read the book, you won't.

Her writing just keeps getting better and this was a longer story. I enjoyed it very much and look forward to reading more from Becca. I loved reading about Kat and Briggs. Excellent development of the story and characters. This hits home for so many things. I was very impressed and I loved it Ms. Fanning! :) Thanks for writing it! I recommend this 100%.
This is a voluntary review of an Advanced copy. With that being said; I think this is the best book I have read from Ms. Fanning. It has all the elements I look for in a really, really good story. It tells about the characters, gives fantastic drama, and has a lot of passion. I really love the action and I think you will too! Also the main characters, not just the couple have a happy ending. Wonderful.
Returning Vets, Rising Careers, Fighting Addictions, Healing, Love and Life all rolled into one! A MUST READ!
Becca Fanning has once again written an AMAZING book!
Battle Scarred is a story so full of real life including bad decisions and pasts and starting over’s. It’s one that you won't be able to put it down from the very first page.
Briggs Dawson is, unfortunately more and more these days, the typical veteran returning home. He has fought for his country and ended up leaving a part of himself behind in Iraq, literally. He lost his arm, along with his Marine buddies, in an attack on their vehicle. He returns home and now finds himself short one arm, homeless and jobless.
Katrina "Kat" Crawford is a women whose career is at a pivotal point. She has just completed a career making, or ending, prosthetic arm prototype. However, the power source that she has used is NOT FDA approved to be used or tested on humans. She is also a loving sister trying to help her twin brother, Toby, overcome his drug addiction.
Briggs and Kat meet after Toby’s first support group meeting. The story that unfolds is nothing short of spectacular! It includes everything from romance, to suspense, to shapeshifting and, of course it has to include, crazy exes. NOTHING is left out but EVERYTHING makes it even better!
These characters are expertly developed. The topics touched range from PTSD, to addiction, to troubled exes are done so well and realistically. Becca Fanning shows how these obstacles, with hard work and dedication, can be overcome making each person only stronger for having been a part of them.
This is ABSOLUTELY a must read.
As a thank you for this AWESOME Advanced Reader Copy, I am voluntarily leaving this review!
First, I voluntarily read and reviewed this Advanced Reader Copy of Fanning’s “Battle Scarred” and I’d do it again. Fanning has gotten better since I started reading her works and I’m more than happy I stuck around.
What we have here is a story of a man, Briggs Dawson, that has been judged for being a Shifter and lost his career as a number one player in football as having an unfair advantage over the human condition, then betrayed by the woman he was to marry leaving him with nothing to come home to. He ended up at a recruiting office and they didn’t care whether he was human of shifter. When all was said and done he found that the human condition wasn’t the only condition with PTSD. Losing his arm put him in the sights of Kat Crawford, who was also trying to prove herself. She had a code to live by and failure was not an option on that list, but she wasn’t prepared to find she was physically attracted to Briggs. That feeling becomes mutual. They still work through the trial that Kat set up for the Aegis arm that gives Briggs back the ability of two good arms. However, you now have the HDF group who are willing to do anything to rid the world of shifters. This book is a must read that will not disappoint. Characters here are very well developed within the story; the action is on point; the heat will scorch you. Time to turn on the fan and get to reading folks.
This is a read that isn't for the 18 and under. Graphic in some areas that would inappropriate for that age group.
Battle Scarred BBW Veteran Bear Shifter Romance by Becca Fanning ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Battle Scarred is so realistic, I scarcely know where to begin with this story - it kept me utterly captivated throughout the entire book WOW! This book is edgy its a different kind story than Becca Fanning usually writes but it's still a fantastic story that I've read. Oh yes it has adventure, intrigue, romance, strong female character, amazing detail, danger, and prejudice, I really enjoyed reading this book. I was so excited when I first noticed the length of this book. The story grabbed my attention with the start and never let go until the very last word. What a well written, fantastic story, my emotions was evolved with every scene between Kat and Briggs, their feelings felt so real and the details of what can happen with veterans tore at my heart it seem so real.
Over all the story is very realistic and the characters are awesome. Briggs is a bear shifter, he will tug at your heart. Kat is a independent woman who is focus only on her job until she meets Briggs. This is one Becca Fannings best written book and one of my favorite. I gave Battle Scarred ( BBW Veteran Bear Shifter) by Becca Fanning 5 Stars. I Highly Recommend this book and the series. I voluntarily wrote this review of this book which was gifted to me by the author with no obligation from myself.
If you believe in the world of paranormal romance, the possibilities are endless and fascinating!
This is a slightly different style of Becca's books. It seems to be slightly darker; the hero is more of a dark in the shadows person. And there is the HDF; the Human Defense Force; who hate all shifters and want to kill them all. I like how Becca shows all the 3 main characters slowly changing their viewpoints and their thoughts about what they need and want. Kat thought she only needed her job working on a new prosthetic prototype, until she meets Briggs who is a shifter. Briggs has had an unhappy life and lost an arm in the military. Now Kat wants him to try the prosthetic arm that she has built and thinks she only needs him for that reason. Briggs is being the rough tough loner who needs and wants no one in his life. Kat's brother Toby has been on drugs and is trying to clean his life up. When Toby is kidnapped by the HDF, Briggs goes to save him and ends up being kidnapped and help prisoner as well. Jay, an abusive ex of Kat's wants Kat to come also. There is a vicious fight, Briggs almost dies and the whole place goes up in flames. But this has shown Kat and Briggs that they need and want each other and it sets Toby into a job helping others who have become dependent on Drugs and or alcohol. And the HDF has disintegrated. Now Kat and Briggs are married and expecting a child. So it has a happy ending. This is a voluntary review of an advanced copy.
I loved the new book from Becca Fanning! Kat has spent the last three years working on a state of the art prosthetic to help those who have lost a part of their body. With it finally a success her only problem is that with the power source used the FDA won't allow human trials. Dropping her twin brother off at a support group meeting she sees the perfect person/shifter for the trials. With her boss on board, even though he isn't the biggest fan of shifters at the time, they go with having shifters try the new prosthetics. Now her biggest challenge is getting the shifter to agree. Briggs Dawson's life went from an extreme high, being the first and only shifter in the NFL, to the extreme low, missing a part of his arm and homeless. When Briggs was kicked out of the NFL, his girlfriend taking everything sent him to the Marines and overseas. When his unit is attacked and he is the only survivor when he comes home his life spirals out of control which leaves him where Kat finds him, homeless and solo. The sparks between them are off the charts and when they give in they find something that is better than the best high they have accomplished on their own. When Kat's ex comes threatening back into her life Briggs is there to put his life on the line. Kat and Briggs overcome a huge curve-ball to get their happy ending. I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
Battle Scarred is a story of discrimination against shifters with an ex-Marine shifter whose arm was blown off by an IED in combat and the engineer who invented a prosthesis that worked like a real arm. Another story is about a post-apocalyptic couple. The third was the one that gripped me tightest, about a young female lawyer taking care of her autistic brother and a young man just out of prison who has to step into his injured brother's place as head of a shifter Mafia clan. Becca Fanning can always be counted on for a great read.
Kat is an engineer who makes prosthetics. She has found a new technology that isn't approved by the FDA or her boss but she knows this will make a difference when it's complete. The arm she has created is all she knew it would be and more. Despite her boss being upset, he can't test it on humans due to it's fluctuation power source. But they decide to get their legal department to get approval to test on shifters. Kat's brother is a recovering drug addict and has made friends with Briggs, a large bear shifter who lost an arm during the war. He doesn't need or want help from anyone but he feels a connection to Kat and is willing to help her out. What starts as a business relationship, turns into something more but there are people who hate shifters, believing they're monsters and not humans and want them gone. Kat and Briggs, without trying or meaning to, get caught up in it and soon have to save each other. Good read although sex scenes seemed awkwardly written, at times.
This is my honest review from a special copy I accepted to read.
OK so I honestly thought that this was so adorable, in a hot way. I honestly don't know how I would feel being attracted to a homeless guy like Kat was. But then she saw past that to the real him, which just shows how opened hearted she is.
Kat is on a high of her work, her protype of a prosthetic arm works she just needs someone to test it on. Unfortunately with highs come lows and she had to work around rules. Briggs has no home or family and suffers PTSD from his time in the marines. He also lost his arm. These two come together thanks to Kats brother Toby and the fact that Briggs could help with her work.
These two are so cute together. Resisting how they feel for each other and insecurities on both sides. Such purity in away. Toby is the funny one amongst all this. Protective of his sister but seems to know that Briggs is right for her. And when a group against shifters and a ex comes into the picture these three shown who they truly are.

I received this ARC book free in exchange for a voluntary honest review. Wonderful book. Kat is a scientist on the brink of helping mankind move past a debilitating loss of limb. Her Brother, a former drug addict who is looking to get help. Moving away from living on the street, Katrina's condition is that Toby go to meetings. It is at a meeting that Toby meets Briggs Dawson. A former professional football player and soldier. Briggs is a bear shifter who now lives on the street, and is too proud and unwilling to accept assistance from anyone including Kat. Missing an arm is not a debilitating injury and he does not want someone to give him one to make up for the loss. But willing to help others with the same loss, he agrees to use the arm. While testing the arm, Briggs and Kat start to realize there is more to their relationship than they imagined, possibly love, but there are people that hate shifters and they do not want to see the testing succeed. Will their love survive?
You can't get any better than a a man Drafted into the professional Football League, a Marine, a War Hero, and a Bear Shifter, when it comes to Briggs Dawson.. He may have came home from the military wounded, loosing his right arm, but he is one strong Alpha Male character and makes me all gooey inside thinking about him.
Katrina works for this company where they make prosthesis for amputees. Unfortunately, she is forbidden to try them on humans. Katrina asks Briggs into helping him, since he's not human.
Next thing you know, their world's are flipped and turned inside out. Now their in the fight of their life's and to love one another.
I recommend Battle Scarred 100%. Especially if you would love a hot Marine - Bear Shifter!
****I voluntarily Reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy.****
Briggs is a veteran mourning the loss of his friends and his arm. As a shifter he's used to bouncing back from most injuries, but this one is permanent. Katrina is at the end of her tether with her brother, Toby. He has substance abuse problems and knows how to tug on her heart strings. Kat is hoping that the new prosthetic she is developing well be a boon to all those suffering limb loss. When the opportunity arises to help Briggs AND test her new prototype arises, she is thrilled. But can she separate her feelings for the burly shifter from her work?
Throw in a nasty ex & anti shifter groups, Kat, Briggs and Toby are in a world of trouble! I loved this. I loved the way shifter mythology expanded so that they could sustain limb loss injuries making them that bit more fallible. Lovingly tackles PTSD without being either preachy and blase. Fab read!
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book and is was so good about having addictions alcohol and having to fight to be sober my brother I am trying to get help for him but until he really wants help he will keep going to the alcohol and wasting his life I am a scientist and trying to make a prototype prosthetic for the wounded military and other people to help them feel whole Briggs Dawson was the only bear drafted into the football and then he went to the army and know he is home and just wanted to lay low and live his life as a shiftier and find peace but he meets my brother Toby first then he meets me Katrina Crawford and sparks fly so what happens you will have to read it loved it could not put it down. Michelle
Honestly one of the best books by Becca Fanning i have read !! It twists together the life of a bear shifter who has lost his arm in war and an Engineer who makes Prothstetic devices. Kat has to save her project or the whole company could fail, and she rests it on Bear shifter Briggs' helping her get the Aegis arm past EPA funding guidelines, on top of that, they end up having to fight off a group that hates shifters, just because they're different. This is a well written, thought out story of love, betrayel, redemption and ultimately; family. I don't give 5⭐'s often, but this story definitely deserves it !! I received a gifted copy and am voluntarily choosing to leave an honest and unbiased review.
4.5 stars This is an excellent paranormal (shifter) romance. Kat has been working for years to build a perfect prosthetic limb. Unfortunately, due to finances and FDA regulations they can't process the required power source to make the limbs as close to real ones. Kat has a structured but not quite OCD personality/lifestyle. She is desperate to make a difference. Sadly she has many professional and personal issues to deal with. Briggs is a bear shifter who lost his arm while in the Armed Forces. He is also homeless and suddenly has a radical group out to kill shifters. The author brought descrimination, intrigue, suspence, and romance into the story. I received a complementary copy of this book and chose to write a review. I look forward to reading future books by this author.
I found this book fascinating and interesting and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. What you will find in this book is: a homeless & jobless veteran bear shifter (Briggs Dawson), a female engineer working on a prosthetic arm prototype (Katrina aka Kat), a twin brother dependent on drugs (Toby), drama, intrigue, suspense, PTSD, a anti-shifter group, twists & turns, a thieving ex-fiancé, abuse, action, prejudice, villains/baddies, romance, attractions, lust, emotional feelings, love, passions, and erotic scenes. The story-line and plot is well thought out and written, the pace is steady and not rushed. The characters have needs and desires according to their personality. I would recommend this book to people who like to read a bear shifter romance with a HEA.
