If you are a freelance creative artist, this book is essential reading. When I started out as a stand-up comedian, the circuit was in rude health. If you were willing to work, there was a clear route to becoming a pro act working those clubs, potentially getting an agent along the way. Once you were in, if your set remained solid, you could make a fairly simple living.
