While platforms like WordPress have done much to make quality web design available to all, the fact remains that if you want to design a truly unique, bespoke or custom site, you need to have a working knowledge of HTML and CSS. Answering this need, Web Design: Start Here takes you from novice to fully - fledged web designer in just 224 pages. From planning, design, development and testing to promotion, search engine optimization and visitor analytics, the book covers every stage with concise explanations, clear illustrations and plenty of useful and memorable tips along the way. Stefan Mischook has trained thousands of non-technical people in the basics of web design via his highly successful website. In this, his first book, the reader learns a no-nonsense approach to open-source design, covering HTML5 and CSS3, and is introduced to Javascript and PHP. By the end of the book they will have the knowledge and confidence to produce a beautiful, dynamic, multi-page site, opening the way to a new career in web design.
The problem with this book is that it doesn't really go into much detail on actual design - as in how to make functional websites that look good, are accessible, and user-friendly. Instead it focuses on very broad overviews of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. However, it doesn't go into much detail with any of these aspects of web programming to be a useful book for people learning to code. Perhaps useful for people who suddenly find themselves needing to make a website, but it'll just give them and idea of what they'll need to learn, as opposed to teaching them skills.
Not quite as introductory as I had expected, but just right for me. I have already taken some basic HTML/CSS/JS classes and this book helped connect them. Though, if I hadn't already taken classes, this book would have completely confused me.
The writing was a bit spotty, but it was easy enough to understand with my limited tech knowledge.
It's very basic introductory to web development. Sadly, advertisments promise more than such a short book is able to deliver. Stefan is great lecturer, his YouTube channel and his courses are legit, he also shines as an author, it's a shame he has not gone any deeper into it. Top Job Lord Mischook!
