This was my first book by Sherryl Hancock. It’s a very emotional book about Skylar, a war veteran who barely survived Iraq, with scars not only on her skin but much deeper ones on her soul. PTSD is troubling her more and more.

Then she meets the headstrong computer expert Devin. Sparks are flying from the first moment and both women can’t and want to deny the attraction they feel. But from the beginning, it’s more than just sexual attraction for Devin, there is something about Skylar that fascinates her. But their relationship is hard work for both women, with Skylar suffering from her traumas.

What Skylar endured in Iraq is really hard to bear, I had tears in my eyes and my heart ached for her. I’m sure there are so many men and women involved in all these terrible wars, which suffer exactly stuff like that, and that’s just horrible.

Besides this, it’s a beautiful love story about two strong women, who learn that, with the right person on your side, you don’t have to be always strong. And it’s about survivors guilt. There are also some great secondary characters, especially Jams.

The only thing I wasn’t really fond of is, that it was more or less insta love, I’m more the slow burn romance type.

My rating 4.5 stars

An emotional rollercoaster!

Traumatic events from the past threaten to destroy their fragile and complex relationship. Skyler is a master at hiding her feelings and thoughts. The two women find themselves growing closer but her dark secrets just might stop them. The concept, the characters, the breakdown, the revelations and all the emotions, it all amaze me. An absolute emotional rollercoaster and at times gut wrenching. Great concept and very well executed.

Unpopular opinion alert. I really wanted to like this! I think my expectations were too high and I was disappointed by the superficial way Skylar's PTSD was handled. I thought some of the scenes were a bit too dramatic and I rolled my eyes a couple of times. The only reason I didn't DNF it is because it was on audio and I was on a bus.

The first thing I learned about the WeHo series is that the books are terribly addictive. You get drawn in really quickly and soon are invested in the characters’ lives. I feel that the best books are ones that resonate somehow in your own life. When Angels Fall made me reflect on some things in that way.

Devin, a world class computer expert meets a new woman at one of her parties in her Malibu home. This woman turns out to be Skyler Boche’, a sexy Cajun, who is both heroic and damaged, a hair trigger mix that compels Devin to climb in deeper, beyond their one night stand. Devin James, herself, is an intriguing character, all fire and intellect. They’re an evenly matched pair who take a substantial journey together to find peace and happiness. A lil action, romance, and sad moments. Currently, my favorite WeHo out of three that I have read. And of course, I now have that darn When Angels Fall song stuck in my head.

What a read. So glad I picked it up. Looks can be deceiving in the case of Skyler Boche' and Devin James. Skyler is a broken spirit not realizing she is waiting for that someone. Devin is a person that knows what she wants and plans to hang in there no matter what. This is a tough read for several reasons with PTSD at the center. It was not so much about romance as it was about relationship and how a person responds when the going gets tough.

If you like “tortured, butch, smoking (literally, not figuratively) ex-military, tough, yet soft, salt of the earth” girl meets “girl genius from wrong side of tracks done good”, ... then you’ll probably enjoy this.
It’s not really my bag. That’s all.

I’m not sure whether I’m generally in a bit (more of) a grump (than usual). A fox killed 4 of our 5 chickens. And it’s as traumatic as you’d think. Unless you don’t like animals, I guess.

I loved this book because it is about overcoming evil and finding life and love again. The main character has somehow managed to survive the horrible traumas (which are tough to read about) she's suffered but needs her love to help her finally let go of the shame and guilt. Now, if they could just fix the typos and grammatical errors...

Fast read. I liked elements but overall the writing and story telling needed some refinement.

Last book of the year completed. Book 96.
And oh boy, I’m so happy it was so good. I was not expecting to rate it the way I do. 5/5.
Until today I’ve only rated 6 other books with 5 stars. This being my first year in GoodReads I realized that for me a 5 star rating is for a book with substance and/or a book that has been developing it's characters in a complex way.

This book was such a surprise. First of all I read book 1 in the series instead of book 0 but I was so into it that I had to continue. We get to meet Skyler Boché, she’s a war survivor with severe PTSD who has a mechanism to avoid everything, people included. Our other main character is Devin James, she’s portrayed as a very LA girl girl, happy, colorful, true to herself.

At the beginning of this story we see a very unbalanced weight regarding who is working for their relationship to make it, you get to understand why it happens but also how fascinating it is to fight for what you want.

This book is also a slight reminder of how much people suffer at war. I have many family members that are still suffering the consequences and we should never doubt the pain they still suffer and how sometimes silence in a way is comfort.

Supporting characters: Jam, perfection for Skyler and also Devin after a while. Sebastian, his presence was enough. How Skyler and Devin’s parents were described made everything so believable.

Descriptions: Skyler and Jam days in war, Devin’s accident, Skyler’s fight with her dad, meeting Benny’s parents, fascinating.

The only thing I didn’t like was -spoiler-

I was moved by this book, probably I could say many other things but I would prefer people to read it.

This is my first book by Sherryl D. Hancock and boy it won’t be the last.

PS: If you are looking for a love story, meaning a book based in the relationship more than anything else.. this is not. This book works because the MCs relationship but is focused in how during adversity they chose each other and because how the loved their partner they achieved an awesome relationship.

I loved watching Devin break down all of Skyler’s walls to help her deal with her past. This book was a rollercoaster of emotion that had me laughing one moment and crying the next. Sherryl Hancock did an amazing job of bringing depth and dimension to her characters and their relationships.

Really enjoy this - fast becoming a must read series. (Not sure why they are a series - number zero and number 1 had no mutual reference at all - but no complaints.) I had to cue into her writing style, but once I have done so, love it, even though there was a certain inevitability about it - the low point is coming and it's not going to be pretty (not a spoiler as this is stated almost from the get-go). Thank you.

Wow

I can't believe it took me so long to start this series. I really enjoyed the storyline. Being g a disabled vet with ptsd and spending time the VA I have met some vets with that have gone through similar Situations. I thought the topic was well written with care. As for the characters they were all believable. I could see all of them while I read even Benny. I would definitely recommend this book.

Nope, nope, nope!

Nope, nope, nope. Not going to continue reading this. Run-on sentences, mid-chapter point-of-view shifts, awkward sentence structures and word use, and more. Reads like a first draft. Needs an editor, very badly.

I am a sucker for damaged, flawed characters who find a patient, loving partner who helps them on their road to healing. This was a wonderful book and I will definitely continue to read the series. This author is new to me, but it will definitely not be the last book I read of hers.

This is the first in a pretty long series (14 books so far). Each appears to be a standalone inasmuch as each features a new couple - I suspect former characters pop up. Being OCD, I started with book 1. BTW ... for those who had the same head scratching moment ... WeHo is West Hollywood (where I guess every book is set?). Yeah - I had to google it.

A pretty quick read that features the developing relationship between Skyler, an air rescue helicopter pilot who's dealing with PTSD and trying to come to grips with the death of two of her crew members in Afghanistan, and Devin, a highly paid computer specialist. Thinking back - this was pretty much Skyler's story. Devin was not as well developed and had very little backstory reveal despite the fact that she kind of had a kick ass job (hacker extro-ardinare, working for the LAPD).

A light romance with very little sex - they have sex, but not on the page. Other than the drama of dealing with Skyler's PTSD, there is very little going on - the focus is on the relationship and there aren't many angsty hurdles. Since it was so focused on the characters, I would have liked to see more development - there was a fair bit of tell rather than show.

I'm going to try a few more as the series tends to get rave reviews and see if I get pulled in as well.

These are available through Kindle Unlimited, so there's no buyers remorse if you give it a try.

I usually only give a one-star rating when I DNF a book, but I can't bring myself to give this two stars. Nothing really happens. The two mains basically meet for the first time, and the next day they're practically living together. Skylar's PTSD is used as a plot device which I absolutely hate. And don't even get me started on the epilogue.

Definitely DNF.

I can't really talk about the content because I went for the audiobook. The narration is just bad. The narrator couldn't decide on one accent for one of the main characters, which is doubly bad because the accent is a thing that's actually mentioned. She also constantly sounds slightly drunk for some reason.

Also, come on: the characters meet and are practically instantly in love for reasons they "can't put a finger on." How generic can you get...

It took me about 5 minutes to be fed up with the content, too. It reads like somebody's first attempt at writing, and something about the pacing just feels off.

The ending is good

The beginning and ending were great. The middle was really boring. I stopped readinf the book but picked it up a few months later. I needed something boring to help me sleep I guess. The pilot was a jerk, childish, and closed off. How Devin fell in love and stayed in love is beyond me. Once the pilot was running away from her problems/ feeling, the book started to become interesting again.

This is the first book I've read from the author, so I don't know if its her norm, but I didn't really get why the MCs were together. There didn't seem to be any depth given to them.

I made is a goal of mine for this month for at least 50% of the books I read to be about POC or feminists or LGBTQ+ or any of the minority groups that are underrepresented in media. I accidentally stumbled onto this book when the 17th book in the series was recommended to me. I didn’t realize it was the 17th book in the series until I started reading it and I was like “what the heck?” who are these characters they keep talking about without introducing them? Then, I realized my mistake so I went back and downloaded the first book, this one.

I really enjoyed this book. It not only emphasized LGBTQ+ characters and their perspectives and certain troubles they face from a variety of standpoints: out of the closet, in the closet, disproving parents, supportive parents, LGBT in the military, etc. also an Army vet with PTSD. The story was full of growth and circumstance and troubling and sweet all at the same time.

My biggest complaint is that it was told from 3rd person so I often felt that the author was telling me the story rather than me feeling it. Also, when Hancock did describe the characters feelings, she had to use their name often so we knew who was doing the talking/ thinking, which broke up the natural flow while reading.

Overall, I would like to continue with the series. When I jumped into the beginning of the 17th book initially, the few previous story lines they brought up seemed really interesting so I would like to see where it goes.

A beautiful story and an emotional roller coaster. I have been bawling through the last few chapters.
The story centres on the developing relationship of Devin, a woman who will give everything she has got to help those around her, and Skylar, an ex-army helicopter pilot who struggles with her untreated PTSD. Skylar has been lucky to have the support of Jam, her best friend for over 15 years but he recognises that it is the support, love and patience of Devin that will help Skylar break through her pain.
Unfortunately, I appear to have made it sound as shallow as I first thought it might be when I read the blurb, but it was, instead, a wonderful story, full of deep emotion, stressing the importance of the love and patience. So good, that I have not allowed the grammar errors that appear so often in ebooks to effect my rating.

I enjoyed this story a lot. In a sense it was a bit more angsty than WeHo #0, but still had that feel good vibe. I really liked Skylar and Devin even though Skylar, understandably, could be a bit of a hard-head. And I've no words for the things we learnt here about some of the characters, heart wrenching.

P.S.: I hope some stuff I've seen here, like in the previous book, won't be a trending with the next 20 books, I don't think I can take it.

P.S.²: I couldn't get past the whole lot of kissing after smoking. It kept taking me back in time with an ex who smoked socially and my goodness, the taste of ash and feel of sand in her tongue came back like it was yesterday. yikes. And the funny part, to me, is the coincidence of nicknames, both the chain smoker here and my ex are nicknamed Sky LOL

I'm on the fence with this series - i'm now on book 3 and whilst i like the potential of what the author is trying to do here, the text itself feels like it needs a good edit and development.

I will say that the author's writing style is different and so that takes some getting used to, there's more left off the page than on and the romance is very much 'love at first sight', which isn't what i'd usually read.

However i'm a sucker for a series, i like recurrent characters that pop up further down the line and i like authors that aren't afraid to write about difficult topics, in this case PTSD. I'll admit to being emotional by the time i'd got to the part where Skyler desperately needs help before it's too late. For that reason i'm in for at least another few books in the series 😃

Devin & Skyler. Wow! Devin sets her sights on Skyler and insinuates herself into her life. Devin, the 'fix-it' girl. The author writes her as caring but I read her as intrusive. Hacking Skyler's life to track her down and end up on her door step. Who does that? Not my book. I live with PTSD and it allows me to avoid/walk away from people like Devin. But Skyler didn't walk away. She drinks, a lot, and smokes like a chimney. The story's well written showing Skyler's decline through action sequences or dialogue. War is hell. Without sordid details the reader learns what happened. It's a book I couldn't put down. I definitely cried at some point. There is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Falling in love with secrets

Devin and Skyler bumped into each other at a party. Sky was sitting outside smoking one Devin came up and tried to talk to her. Sky was a helicopter pilot for the LA fire department are there previously served in the army. Sky didn’t want anything to do with Devin but Devin Did not give up. Sky has many secrets and feelings and that is what the plan is about. It is a great love story but not without trials and tribulations. I found the characters very good in the plat also good. This is a very meaningful book and I recommend it to all who like love stories.

When Angels Fall (WeHo #1) — Sheryl D. Hancock/Narrator: Barbara Rich (9 chapters + Epilogue) June 6, 2022

Skyler suffers PTSD after the war that leaves her feeling distant. A firefighter who uses a copter to rescue people in mud slides and put out forrest flames, she has no time for love.

Devin is a computer software expert who temps the reluctant Skyler into a romantic night.

When Skyler doesn’t follow-up, Devin doesn’t let her get too far away. She feels a connect with this woman that won’t fade away.

Great romance with not much sex. I liked it.

Don’t rag on my star count; it was a good, fast read.

Three stars.
