Hearing God's Voice: My Life with Scripture in the Churches of Christ
In times of change, Christians have always sought enduring answers from the pages of Scripture. Our hermeneutic - our method of organizing and understanding the message of the Bible - predetermines what answers we will glean. But is our process of understanding based on the Bible, or on our cultural and historical assumptions? Dr. Thomas Olbricht looks back on the last sixty years in Churches of Christ and offers his observations of how our perceptions of Scripture have changed and evolved. He clears a path through the shifting thickets of an unsteady world; a path that leads toward the Everlasting - a way to hear God's voice.

All of us have a story to tell in our faith evolves. Thomas Olbricht has done this here. I would have loved to have sat in one of his classes, but I knew nothing of him until recently…coming from a more conservative wing of the church of Christ, he would have been seen as a “liberal” or a “change agent”. Instead, here is a man who loved God and studying the Bible. When you do that, without the “pre understanding” of your church background, you’re going to learn something, and that can be intimidating.

I did finish this book but I don’t know when I started or ended reading it. Tom was a friend of our family in the late 1940s and had Sunday dinner with us. In his book he referred to Harding College & Dr JD Bales, West Jefferson Church of Christ. Rockford, Ill. and ministers Roy Van Tassel and J.P.Sanders the blind preacher. My brother, 14 years older than me, reminded me that when Sanders read his braille Bible (with his fingers) tears down his face! I guess this is trivia but the little tidbits were interesting to me.

Great book on biblical hermeneutics, the study of understanding the Bible. Olbricht approaches hermeneutics by taking the reading on a journey of his history in the Church of Christ. I loved this book. Give it a read.
