I'm so excited to have finally gotten my hands on this!! It did not disappoint. The Silent Shield sees the continuing adventures of Trneowy Kiskaddon in her quest to become an Oath Maiden, earn the seat of the Siege Perilous, and protect her King. I absolutely love this series. I cannot recommend it enough to fellow fantasy fans. Books 3-6 in particular, are reimaginings of Arthurian myth. I'm so excited to have finally gotten my hands on this!! It did not disappoint. The Silent Shield sees the continuing adventures of Trneowy Kiskaddon in her quest to become an Oath Maiden, earn the seat of the Siege Perilous, and protect her King. I absolutely love this series. I cannot recommend it enough to fellow fantasy fans. Books 3-6 in particular, are reimaginings of Arthurian myth. (King Drew is Arthur, Queen Genevieve is Guinevere, Trynne is Lancelot, Morwena is Morgana, and there is a Merlin, but he is not present in this book.)

In each of the books, there is a short interlude in the chapters, often written by someone whose viewpoint we do not see or know. In this one, it was Owen Kiskaddon, and his story, told in short paragraphs was every bit as interesting as Trynne's. Owen Kiskaddon is one of my favorite fantasy heroes of this year, and seeing how he was handling his abduction had me on edge. This is the single biggest cliffhanger in The Silent Shield. I won't spoil it further by saying why.

I've said it before, I'm sure I'll say it again, but Wheeler is not afraid to put his characters through hell. There are ups and downs and they are all felt, every joy, every sadness. I was reading this on my lunch break today and I felt tears coming on, and I wasn't even sure why. Every book is a roller coaster ride of emotions. Mostly because of the characters. They are real and complex and flawed. The best ones are every shade of gray. You never know who to trust or who not to trust. You want to trust them all and know you shouldn't.

The writing is beautiful but wonderfully accessible. These are easy, fun reads and can be enjoyed in just a couple of days. The world building is rich and full of intricate details, different societies, different cultures. The magic system fascinates me and I love how Wheeler employs it.

I won't spoil the ending, but the only reason I gave this four stars and not five was because it felt a little too convenient. There is a whole other book due out in a couple of months, and I'm very intrigued to see where it is going. This almost felt like it could have been the end to the series, but I'm glad it isn't.

I highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys fantasy!

Somehow with this author, the middle books seem to be the best. Again, The Hollow Crown took me by surprise, though much less than before. I’m not sure, if my expectations are usually so low, after the slow start or if it really is a genius stroke of the author. I think it is a mix of both. Interestingly, the author takes most of his ideas from our own history and mixes them together.

We find Trynne as a young adult now grappling with the constant tragedies befalling her family and kingdom. In this fifth entry into the Kingfountain Series, Trynne is gaining new magical powers, and politcal talent, as she is in the midst of intrigues threatening to pull her kingdom completely apart.
What has happened to Owen her father and the hero of the first three books.
Other great characters such as Iago and Morwenna change or are they hiding something, as the story progresses.
If you are reading this series you will not be disappointed in this entry.

Since Jeff Wheeler kindly gave me an early copy I'm trying to be extra good about not giving out spoilers in this review.

Through the entire series I have liked how each book resolves a number of problems even though new problems crop up. I never have felt like I'm just being strung along. The Silent Shield has this same format. Through the entire series I have liked how each book resolves a number of problems even though new problems crop up. I never have felt like I'm just being strung along. The Silent Shield has this same format. As you remember we were left on tenterhooks from The Hollow Crown that Owen has been kidnapped and King Drew has been given a year respite from the war because of this unexpected treachery by King Gahalatine. Another piece of intrigue that remained was the question of who could be trusted; Fallon or Morwenna, or neither.

Another aspect I've enjoyed through the series are the monologues, or interludes, by a "mystery" character. This literary device works well to see some of the events from a different perspective. It's also fun to sleuth out who is speaking. You will immediately identify the character speaking in the little monologues in The Silent Shield, and in this case, the reader will be happy to know the extenuating circumstances.

As always, I love the characters in the Kingfountain series. The protagonist, Tryneowy Kiskaddon (usually called Trynne) has come to accept her role as being chosen by the Fountain and she is dedicated to fulfilling the role of an Oath Maiden. I was happy to see that she has been tested in keeping those oaths. I did wish that I had felt her struggle a little more with resisting the temptation to kill for revenge. She certainly had reasons to want to kill for revenge! The man who disfigured her would be a good example. Trynne is loyal, looks for the good in others and is faithful to the will of the Fountain. She also still suffers from some self-doubt; her achilles heel. She continues in her role as a Lancelot as a fierce protector of her king, the epitome of a King Arthur.

Iago Fallon Llewellyn is steadier and has grown from his experiences. I liked him more as a person this time around and feel a little sad that he and Trynne will not get to marry (as stated in the last book by Sinia, Trynne's mother). Elwis is another character who has grown into his role and learned to be more humble and patient. I hope something good comes for him in the last book.

Morwenna Argentine has never been a character that I can fully trust. How can I when she is named so similarly to Morgan le Fay, who was Arthur's downfall in the Arthurian legends? Nevertheless, there continues to be more to her than meets the eye? How does she relate to Owen as her father's daughter? What does she feel her place should be in the world? She obviously wants to be respected, much like Fallon seeks. It's interesting to see how Fallon and Morwenna approach the problem of wanting respect differently.

In the last book we saw a very small slice of King Gahalatine, that he wanted to be the benevolent emperor for the world. In The Silent Shield we get to see more of Gahalatine. He is interesting because he is obviously misguided, manipulated and is actually a decent human being. He believes he is doing what is right. He see the good in Trynne as well as some of the rulers of nations who have opposed him. In the long run, I felt like Gahalatine was listening to others which made him very unusual.

The Kingfountain series is excellent for young adults and adults because it is clean, it has influences from history and legends and has excellent writing. I also recommend it because it has plenty of twists, but isn't so convoluted that new readers to fantasy will be overwhelmed. If a book doesn't have great characters I quickly lose interest. Wheeler does such a great job with his characters I always want to read more.

In keeping with his style, there is a big pow at the end. I can hardly wait for the next book, thankfully it will be out in just a few months!

And, the plot thickens! Trynne is in love but can't act upon her feelings. The world is thrown into chaos and no one knows she is secretly fighting alongside the men! I might be wrong, but Wheeler seems to have created the ultimate Mary Sue and frankly it detracts from what could have been an outstanding book. Despite that, I like that Trynne is a strong female who isn’t ruled by emotions and of course the plot continues to escalate at an unrelenting pace.

I have to say I loved this book even more than The Hollow Crown! The story continues with Trynne and the whole court searching for Owen who went missing during the battle with Gahalatine and his forces. Ceredigion prepares itself for the inevitable war that is going to happen in one year and Trynne continues to train the Oath Maidens.

I'm really enjoying the series thus far. The prior books did take quite a bit from history but since I love history, it was more entertaining to match up the historical events in the fictionalized world. There's also a fair bit to be said about some of the underlying themes. This is my favorite of the Kingfountain series so far. I'm really glad that I've read all the Muirwood books, because it makes this so enjoyable when I catch all the tie-ins. Trynne Kiskadon is amazing. Mr. Wheeler really did a fantastic job describing the fight scenes, and it's fun to pick up on the myths and history woven throughout.

This one follows Trynne again, who now is the leader of the Oath Maidens, and she also secretly shows up in competitions and battles as the Painted Knight. She is the Lancelot character, which I kind of suspected, but I couldn't figure out how the whole Guinevere/Lancelot story was going to go down if that was the case. Turns out, he just left that part of the legend out altogether. She plans to compete in the Kingfountain Gauntlet for the seat at the Round Table called the Siege Perilous, the one reserved for King Drew's protector now that Owen is missing. The Fountain has whispered to Trynne that it will be hers, but several turns of events make it seem like this is impossible. The way it's ultimately fulfilled is completely unexpected--so like God, whom the Fountain clearly represents.

One major complaint, though it isn't really a critique, just a disappointment: Wheeler really likes to set us up to root for couples that then don't end up together, and marry other people out of duty instead! I like the fact that this makes his books unpredictable, I suppose, and in the case of Trynne and Fallon, he really kept me guessing. I love the fact that on many occasions, Trynne has good reason to doubt his loyalty, as well as Morwenna's (the Morgan la Fay character), and yet they redeem themselves in the end. Nobody's a cardboard character; they're all very complex. Yet the fact that Trynne so often doubts Fallon makes it pretty impossible for them to end up together, I suppose. I was just hoping for a redemption of the Owen/Evie story in their children. NOPE!

But, romance is a minor enough part of the plot that this didn't ruin it for me. One more book left in this series--can't wait to find out how it ends!

Sooo Good! This has to be one of my all time favorite series by now. Not only do I recognize certain reinvented characters from the tales of old but everytime things from Jeff Wheeler's other series, like the Bhikku and Leering stones are mentioned I fangirl out! Jeff Wheeler rocks another book! Trynne Kiskaddon is bereft of her parents and must hold herself and the king together in the midst of great trials. She knows there are enemies in her midst but who are they? Can she even trust the man she loves? And why was her mother sad when she told Trynne she had seen a vision of who Trynne would marry? The resolution of all this comes as a surprise and what a cliffhanger of an ending. This is by far the best series Wheeler has done.

I have been enjoying this series very much and I am so glad someone had recommended the first book to me a while back.

The Silent Shield is book number 5 in the Kingfountain series and it is a young adult fantasy series. The Silent Sheild got me hooked from the very beginning and I just couldn't (and didn't want to) stop reading it until the end.

4.5 stars. I didn't like what he did with the ending, so I'm docking it half a star as punishment! Nevertheless, these books are so good. They are exciting and intriguing. Never a dull moment. I love the characters, they did a great job of making the second trilogy (the story of the next generation) as good as the first trilogy.

I recommend this series for fans of Ranger's Apprentice or Septimus Heap or The Ascendance Trilogy or The Queen's Thief. (All great series by the way!) ...more
