Chaos as Usual: Conversations About Rainer Werner Fassbinder

Rate this book
Rainer Werner Fassbiner left behind a literary and cinematic legacy which holds a unique place in the history of European film and in the culture of the twentieth century. It evolved as the expression of an era, between 1966 and 1982, in a country which was then another Germany and which no longer exists.

Interesting and at times almost thought-provoking, but this book written by one of the subject's ex-wives is too protective to allow any but one theme to emerge: Fassbinder was enormously energetic. But I already knew that. And now I know it multiplied by the number of times each interviewee mentions it. With access to these sources, more oil could have been drilled. Why not separate gossip from fact? We get little of either. Of some interest to filmmakers, mainly for inspiration from an era long behind us, the only place from which almost any inspiration can be drawn in terms of hatching a breakout plan from no man's land.

a third excellent cornerstone for the inside scoop on my man fass after the katz bio and interviews with him (anarchy of imagination). current boss of estate/foundation/last wife/genius film editor juliane lorenz compiles interviews from just about everyone u could want (WHERE IS UDO tho??). alternately you get good gossip and intel on him as a person/friend (what he meant to each person) and great intel on how he worked/how his genius functioned exactly. some interviews felt curiously short but for the most part lorenz extracts good juice. inspiring me to notch the remaining gaps in his filmography into my belt (nora helmer, frauen in new york, finish alexanderplatz, etc). happy birthday month!

Good, all encompassing interview book about legendary German new wave master R.W Fassbinder amassing entries from his filmmaking peers and a large chunk of the Fassbinder actors. Some insightful gems especially from D.P Michael Ballhaus, dir's Werner Schroeter, Wim Wenders, Margaritte Von Trotta and closing on Juliane Lorenz. But eventually gets repetitive and redundant. For RWF buffs only
