An interesting and well-written book, it explores the multi-faceted world of the preternatural. A society comprising of vampires, fey, witches and can de loups, all existing alongside unsuspecting mortals (or commoners), and all interlinked with a complicated network of family connections and allegiances.

Against all advice, she falls for vampire Rune Sanderson, and Sasha learns secrets run deeper than she could have ever thought.

What blew my mind most about this book is how much effort Ruth Miran In search of her family history, Sasha meets genealogist Ruth and soon begins to uncover the complex and unexpected roots twisting deep into her past. Sasha is a blood witch, and with this comes a power she must learn to control, along with rules she is expected to abide about pairing within the races. Against all advice, she falls for vampire Rune Sanderson, and Sasha learns secrets run deeper than she could have ever thought.

What blew my mind most about this book is how much effort Ruth Miranda has put into the history of the different supernatural species. She discusses their histories, strengths and weaknesses, along with the rules of their race—especially when it comes to pairing with other species. This could make a book all of its own; an encyclopedia of preternatural species, so to speak, and one I’d definitely use for research! Some of this detail did weigh me down in parts however, in particular the history winding through Sasha and Rune’s families which covered many pages. There were too many names to keep track of and I did lose my way with this after a while. At its core, this is a love story about two people fighting to stay together against the odds. It’s not a fast-paced exciting read, more an ambling tale, rich with detail requiring savouring.

Miranda writes complex characters, full of flaws, angst and insecurities. This makes for a story layered with emotion. Sasha is en engaging character, coming to terms with her powers as a blood witch, her family history, and the precarious balancing act within the relationships of her fellow preternaturals. Rune is a tortured soul, torn between his love for Sasha and the need to protect his family. Secondary characters are just as interesting, especially Sasha’s friend Ruth who could headline a book on her own.

As the first in the Preternatural series, Unnatural has me hooked. I will continue with the series, but with the hopes the action picks up in the next instalment. Although it didn’t take from my enjoyment, a revision might be worth the author’s time to fix the few typos I came across.

Overall, a fascinating and rich beginning to this series and I’m looking forward to more.

Unnatural starts with Sasha, a young woman looking for her family after the loss of her uncle. This leads her to genealogist, Ruth, who recognizes that Sasha is a blood witch and introduces her to a world of supernatural beings such as vampires and werewolves. Once in this world, Sasha learns the dark secrets of her family and discovers a forbidden love. Full of interesting ideas, Unnatural is a great start to what is sure to be an intriguing series. The Author spent a great deal of time and effort into making the supernatural species, from their history to many other other things. You got a lot of information about past events. Plus a lot of who can love who and which species aren’t allowed to get with another species. (Though that rule was broken more times than I can count, which made the ‘rare’ pairing not so rare or uncommon). I really apprentice the time spent making all the family ties and all the history.
