Craig Lucas understands women well and portrays them compassionately. In this play, Libby, who is one of the main characters, despite how pathetic and pitiable she comes across, is witty, perceptive and endlessly amusing. She has one of the most fascinating and heartbreaking characters arcs, along with Griever, her boyfriend/lover/just friend? from a support group she's in. I haven't read many plays yet to be able to compare, but the way he writes the dialogue for each character almost makes me want to trade in all of my fiction books for plays. Every character in this play has their own voice, which is something commonly lost on standard books. I don't want to give too much of the story away, since it's a fairly short play, but in a nutshell, I think it is about people trying very hard to connect with someone else and really struggling with it for very different reasons which is the essence of each character.
