This book is the literary version of a conference that was held at the Museum of Sydney in July 1995. Over two days, an array of voices and styles of expression evoked and analysed the complex transactions that colonialism produced (and continues to involve) throughout Australia and the Pacific. In accounting for the volatility of our past and present in this region, EXCHANGES offers insights into many zones of colonial encounter: language, ecology, disease, aesthetics, institutional power, and various philosophies of everyday life. Here is a book composed in the knowledge that these themes are as vital today as they were so many years ago, when the newcomers came to the Southern part of the world.
