What I Liked:
I liked this book, but not enough to give it a very positive rating. Three stars is positive, but I'm a little disappointed that I didn't like this book more. I think a lot of it had to do with personal preferences and likes/dislikes, and I think others might really like this book.
When Rives and Skye escaped Nil in Nil Unlocked, they thought they were finished with the island. But Skye has been having terrible dreams about a darkness, and a girl calling her back to Nil. Little by little, Skye begins to shut out Rives. So what can they do? Skye and Rives decide to go to the Death Twins islands in Hawaii, along with Thad and Charley, to try and stop the island once and for all. But the four of them get sucked right back into the thick of things, and they find themselves back on the island. Paolo is there, along with a dozen or so new inhabitants. Together, the teens try to solve the riddles and destroy Nil forever. But at what cost?
The beginning part of the book is fairly boring, not going to lie. Things really start to get interesting when Rives, Skye, Thad, and Charley go to the islands to stop Nil, but end up getting thrown back onto the island. And just like that, they need to figure out how to how to destroy Nil in three months, when the equinox rolls around.
This book is very much focused on Rives and Skye, and not so focused on Thad and Charley. All of the characters play a huge role in the story, but Rives and Skye are our protagonists. I love Rives! He is an alpha teen male, a leader, and a protective, loyal boyfriend. Part of me thinks Skye doesn't deserve him - he's too good for her (see more on this below).
Matson does a great job in fleshing out all of the characters, despite there being so many of them. Zane is so hip and cool, and I love the way he talks. Hafthor is calm and wise. Carmen is craaaazy. Paolo is intelligent and deep. Lana is constantly in denial (in my opinion). Molly and Davey are so cute. You see what I mean. Each character has their own personality, each is different in their own way. Sometimes when you have so many characters, they can start to blur together. Not so, with these secondary characters.
This book is well over four hundred pages, and I would say that the last one hundred and fifty pages or so are the really exciting ones to read. It felt like nonstop planning, figuring out, twists, revelations. Like everything was finally coming together and people were finally understanding things. The climax was action-packed too! I felt like the ending was abrupt, but the action leading up to it was good.
I enjoyed the edge-of-your-seat action, trying to find out if they would succeed in destroying Nil or not, trying to figure out the clues. Fun stuff! Scary stuff. Overall this is a good conclusion novel, and it probably does the series justice. I just did not like it as much as I liked Nil and Nil Unlocked.
What I Did Not Like:
From the start, I just could not deal with Skye. I remember liking her in Nil Unlocked? I pretty much hated her from page one of this book. Everything about her rubbed me the wrong way. She refused to open up to Rives in the beginning. Why? Pride, tough-girl-attitude, she doesn't want to stand behind her boyfriend... there is a difference between a man swooping in and fixing your problems, and someone offering to help you. It doesn't break the rules of feminism to accept help.
And this attitude is present throughout the entire book. Skye just does not lean on Rives, does not let him in. She pushes him out every single time things get worse. She leaves him in the dark, and most of the time, for no good reason. Honestly I want to say she's dumb or crazy or mental but then I try to remember that she has Nil in her head... but no, some of the (poor) decisions she made when it came to Rives were all on her own.
There were some seriously cheesy, poorly written lines in this book. I would pull the lines directly but I've lost access to the book so I can't share them (my fault for reading this eARC at the last minute). There was a lot of "telling" where there could be "showing", and cliches upon cliches. Who even says things like "I'm a big girl" when trying to express a feminist point about something or the other? In the context of the situation, it seemed so 90's and totally cliche. You'll just have to trust me - this was one example of many.
So basically, I couldn't stand Skye. I wish this book weren't so dependent on her! Why did the author focus just on her (and Rives, by default)? Literally all of the bad things in this book (like, the four of them landing in Nil again in the first place) could have been avoided if Skye had been smarter.
It's hard to love a book when you hate the book's protagonist.
Would I Recommend It:
I totally recommend this book, if you've read the other two in the series. There is no way you can't! This book is action-packed and the ending, while abrupt, does wrap up the loose ends. It's a good conclusion novel, especially if you like Skye. I liked her in Nil Unlocked but hated her in this book, so there really is no telling.
Anyway, if you haven't read any of the books in the series, I'd caution you. You're not necessarily missing out on much if you decide you're not interested in the series. It's a fun (and sometimes creepy) series, but not life-changing or anything. Just an honest opinion.

This whole series has been an amped up roller coaster and this book doesn't relent. It's filled with new characters, old favorites, action, heartbreak, and one hell of an ending.

Sigh, I don't know where to beeegin. This review is so hard for me to write.
I really, really enjoyed the first and second book and I've been on this Nil journey since pretty much the beginning, so it definitely does not feel great so give this book a low rating and tell you how much this disappointed me. But that's why I wanna go into full detail. This is gonna hurt. Sorry #NILTribe!
My biggest problem was probably the main character Skye. I'm not gonna spoil the actual outcome of this but this storyline reminded SO MUCH of Tris from Allegiant, that I feel like if you didn't enjoy Allegiant, you should better stay away from this trilogy as a whole.
The main character decided it was her destiny to solve every problem, to be the hero of the story, to save the world.. BY SACRIFICING HERSELF. Bleeeeurgh. This storyline has become really annoying to me.
And if she made that decision and then everything was fine from there on.. her making that decision, being a little scared maybe, but pulling through, I would have been totally fine with it. But no, we get her boyfriend CONSTANTLY discussing with her why it's a bad idea. She shuts him out, he's mad about it, she eventually tells him stuff, they make up aaaaand then eventually the spiel starts again. This is what the WHOLE BOOK WAS ABOUT.
We got a lot of mystery solving on the island itself but I still don't feel any wiser about what the island actually is, where it came from, why it behaved the way it did. The island has an ACTUAL POV in this book and still I don't understand WHAT it is and why it had actual feelings and was nice or evil about some things?
I feel like all we got a conclusion on was the characters, which is fine, as from the beginning on Nil was more about the characters than anything else. But that had already happened at the end of the second book, ACTUALLY at the end of the first book to be honest. I feel like all the questions I had in the first book, the questions as to why I desperately wanted a sequel, where not answered in any way in this final book. So it might just be because of my expectations.. but I just feel so disappointed.
We get some new characters, that I didn't feel interested in at all at this point, we get some new love stories which felt super old and also Skye and Rives were so fucking in love that they could have filled five more books with their eternal love for each other.
Overall I just really didn't find this an enjoyable reading experience. Main characters don't have to be likeable for me to enjoy the story but if you have several ones and they all annoy the fuckout of you, it gets a little frustrating. I really found myself only wanting to continue to get it done with.
The characters didn't really feel believable anymore. They all acted so mature and I get it, an experience like Nil changes you, makes you grow up faster but also an experience like this might make you weak or go crazy. I feel like we didn't have enough facets, ESPECIALLY for the characters that we already got to know before.
Where are the people that just can't handle this experience? SKYE LITERALLY HEARS NIL, SHE HEARS NIL'S VOICE! SHE SEES DEAD PEOPLE. And she is like yeah I'm Sky, I'm the bravest of 'em all, I'm gonna sacrifice myself. I DON'T KNOW. I just don't feel like the characters were realistic. They were just TRYING to be annoyingly mature.
Which was also portrayed in the romances. They were just way over the top. And in this case I too believe that an experience like Nil makes your relationship a strong one. But they didn't act like it was a strong relationship. It was just too much.
In general this is one of my biggest disappointments of the year. I feel like it could have been wrapped up pretty nicely in just two books. It certainly would have worked a lot better for me.

Initial Impressions 4/18/16: 3.75 - 4 stars
I've been a fan of the NIL books for a long time and I loved the feel of them from the start. I think my biggest issue with the book is that I felt like there were a couple of places (including the beginning) that there was a whole lot of nothing going on. Because I read each of these books as a review copy (aka, before they were out), there was a lot of space between them and I had a hard time connecting some of the characters or events. The lulls really killed parts for me but once we got back to, uh... well, I won't flat out spoil it but once we got to what I was waiting for, the pacing really picked up and things got interesting!
A very solid ending to the trilogy overall and it was a fun series from start to finish! I think book one is still my favorite, though.

The series has continued to be so much fun, complete with a creepy island, tough teens, and a neat kind of science-fiction that doesn’t rely so much on technology. NIL ON FIRE completed the trilogy and I was lucky enough to read it a little bit early thanks to a review copy from Macmillan!
I will admit — NIL ON FIRE started off a little bit slow for me. One (personal) problem that I had was that I read each book as an advance review copy, meaning I read them before they came out and that put so much time in between each book. I really did enjoy each one but it seemed like the further I got into the series, the harder it became to jump back in without a refresher! Again, a personal issue but if it’s been a while for you, it might be best to peek back into previous books to remind yourself about characters and the last events!
The other issue I had when starting NIL ON FIRE is that it felt like a long time before the action really started to pick up. My thoughts on the progression are kind of spoilery so this may be a big vague when I say that I felt like I was waiting kind of a long time for everything to really start coming together and to move past the introductory part of this book. There was a lot of time spent with feelings and intuitions but I would have loved to see the story move forward as all of that was going on and I felt like it was just standing still for a bit too long. Some of that could have easily been cut down and brought the readers back into the fast-paced excitement!
After those minor speed bumps, the rest of the book was fun and curious in true NIL fashion! I did find myself still missing more of the spotlight on Charley and Thad but I really grew to love Rives quite a bit over the last two books! Skye had a lot of spunk but she wasn’t my favorite character so I wasn’t quite as interested in her chapters of the book. The supporting cast of characters remained fantastic! I love the diversity with Nil-connected characters from all over and I really just love seeing a new team of people coming to work together.
NIL ON FIRE is the final book in the series so it was exciting to really see everything come to a close! It was interesting to see the sort of battle against Nil as the island really came into play (it even had its own POV!) and how the characters went up against it once and for all. The ending was satisfying and exciting and I still have such a fond place in my heart for these books! I think the first book is still my favorite of the series but I think it’s solid all around and one I’ll continue to recommend!

It was interesting to see the sort of battle against Nil as the island really came into play (it even had its own POV!) and how the characters went up against it once and for all. The ending was satisfying and exciting and I still have such a fond place in my heart for these books! I think the first book is still my favorite of the series but I think it’s solid all around and one I’ll continue to recommend!

This book took almost two weeks for me to finish, which wasn't entirely the books fault, it was mostly RL. That being said, while I was reading this, I was constantly distracted, and it was mostly thoughts of life and existence and the ending of it. Freaky thoughts that kind of spooked me, and it's essentially what made reading this such an arduous undertaking for me.
Overall, this is a fitting end to this series, despite my not liking the main character, Skye, as much as I did in the second book…she's was just...annoying, smackably so. It's told from three POV's, which includes Skye, Rives and Nil…yeah the island has a voice. At first I was annoyed by that, but eventually it makes sense why the Author did it this way. There's a lot of new characters introduced in this book, and it's kind of hard to keep them all straight at first. Although, I did especially like Molly and Davey...oh yeah, and Hafthor too.

Let me start off by saying this is one of the best endings to a trilogy that I have ever read in a long time. The last book in the Nil Trilogy follows the 4 main characters that we know well and love, Charley, Thad, Skye, and Rives.
SPOILERS AHEAD***
As the book started off, I had low expectations due to most trilogy's ending horribly wrong. But I am pleased to say that this book was totally different. As the book started off with showing Skye and Rives life after the island and what Nil had done to Skye and Rives lives, it started the book off with some well needed information that guided Skye and Rives to return to the island. We got to see PTSD on both playing fields with them, but something I wish to have seen was Charley and Thad's side of it as well. As the beginning part of the book seemed boring and like it was going on forever, I had a sense of closure from the second book that I never had. With Rives, Skye, and Thad returning to the island, I thought I would actually get some Thad action back that I loved so much in the first book, but that was simply not the case, but in the end, it worked out. Through the story many more characters were introduced. Some were very irrelevant that I could have done without because they didn't change the stories outcome at all, but it did help break up the book from seeing just the same two point of views the entire time in which we had in the second book. All in all, those have to be my only problems with this book. While continuing the read I got moments where I got attached to two certain characters and then got to see them develop and right after their story ended or started to drift, I fell in love with another two. (Molly and Davey FTW!) After finishing the book, I still feel like I didn't get the full closure as I was hoping for with Thad and Charley, as we never really get to see what happened between the years of Nil and Nil On Fire, and this actually makes me happy. It lets me create something in my head for them, in ways I didn't think would happen. As for Skye and Rives happy ending, I enjoyed how the couple ended up bringing their lives full-circle if I can say that. Starts off with PTSD ends with love and no regrets. I would go way more in depth about how I loved the ending and how the characters all developed very nicely. But I have a feeling I will be able to do that better when a spin off or a novella I sense coming appears. I def. recommend this series! Well done Lynne!

Ce troisième et dernier tome est un truc de dingue! Mais vraiment! NIL est plus qu'une île, c'est une entité vivante qui se joue de tous. C'est un peu flippant et complètement tordu. Je dois avouer que je m'attendais à autre chose, mais l'histoire n'en reste pas moins prenante, stressante et géniale!
Je suis toujours autant admirative du couple Skye/Rives, de vraies ames soeurs. Ils sont magnifiques, grandioses, touchants. Quel plaisir aussi de revoir des anciens! Et d'en découvrir de nouveaux.
NIL, elle vous retourne le cerveau et je suis très satisfaite de la fin, imprévisible!

J'en pouvais vraiment plus, genre plus (ça fait 1 an que j'ai terminé ce livre mais je l'aime toujours aussi peu)
J'ai mis des mois à finir les 2 derniers tomes, pour plusieurs raisons :
1. Changer de personnages principaux dans le tome 2 aurait été à refaire dans le tome 3, j'ai l'impression que l'auteure s'est dit que vu que le tome 1 a bien marché elle referait un 2 mais au final elle en a fait un 3e donc réutiliser Charly et Thad en personnages principaux ça aurait pas collé niveau scénario
2. Skye. Juste Skye. Elle m'insupporte depuis le début du tome 2, genre VRAIMENT. J'en pouvais plus. En plus, elle a entraîné à nouveau sa bande dans son aventure alors que Thad et Charly ont très mal vécu leur séparation
3. Le plot devient vraiment tiré par les cheveux à partir du 2e tome, le "mystère" et "hasard" que contient l'île dans le premier tome sont gâchés par des explications qui pour moi sont bien moins réjouissantes que les découvertes hasardeuses de Charly et Thad du tome 1
4. Même si cela fait partie de l'écriture d'un livre, tout le point de vue sur comment Nil hante Skye m'énervait au plus haut point. Sérieux, le livre c'est "Nil et Skye, feat d'autres personnages" durant tout le long 💀💀
5. Avec le point n°1 encore une fois, je trouve que Matson aurait dû s'arrêter au premier tome. Ou au PIRE des cas au 2e. Mais tirer autant en longueur l'intrigue l'a juste rendue...mauvaise

And alas, the trilogy comes to an end. I'm sad. I very much enjoyed this series. The first book, Nil, was one of those books where I enjoyed it when I read it, but didn't think it was amazing. And then for several weeks, I could not stop thinking about it, and realized that it indeed was another kind of amazing, an even better amazing. My favorite part of these books has always always always been the characters. They're all so different and unique and real. And the books just got more complex and more interesting as the series continued. This book was great. It was a great book, and a great ending to a series. The series was amazing. And there was a certain thing I was horrified was going to happen, and it didn't, so this book was perfect :) Thanks, Lynne! Can't wait to see what comes next from you!!!

Nil is my favorite book of all time and when I learned there were more I freaked out! Nil on fire was a little slow at the beginning with a lot of mysterious events. I enjoyed getting to know each and every character including the island through Nil's point of view. Thad and Charley in Nil was and is the most epic passionate love story I've ever read. Skye and Rives story was amazing it just shows how strong you can be and how you don't always need approval as long as you have yours. The ending was better than I could of hoped for, the perfect ending for the perfect trilogy!!! Thank you Lynne Matson for making all of Nil on Fire's 406 pages count!!!

Currently, there are tears streaming down my face. This is the best trilogy I have ever laid my eyes on. I can't even drop a hint in this review because it will give too much away. If you haven't read this beautiful gift of a book yet (or the trilogy), what the hell are you waiting for!!!!!!

J'ai aimé ce tome autant que le 1er, où on a vraiment de l'action jusqu'au bout. Le système a un peu changé et il y a une partie "Nil" en dehors de Skye et Rives, où on suit à peu près tous les autres personnages de leurs côtés, mais également Nil en elle-même. C'était assez perturbant, de donner une conscience à l'île, mais bon, pourquoi pas hein.
Skye m'a un peu énervée durant ce tome, que ça soit avant ou après le moment important dans la grotte. Rives est quelqu'un qui a une réaction humaine malgré des erreurs et j'ai adoré. J'ai beaucoup aimé suivre Molly et Davey, ou même tous les autres : ça fait du bien de ne pas suivre que deux personnages, n'avoir que leurs pensées et sentiments !
La fin est impressionnante dans le sens bataille Nil vs Humains, Nil vs Skye également. Par contre, j'ai une énorme frustration : dès le début, on nous parle d'électria. C'EST QUOI ?! On en parle jamais, on explique jamais exactement ce que c'est, même si on devine le sens, on a aucune idée de ce que c'est exactement
En soit ce fut une bonne trilogie divertissante même si j'ai trouvé les explications à propos de Nil et le fait qu'elle ait une conscience propre extrêmement tiré par les cheveux, avec des questions laissées sans réponses.

J'avais hâte de retrouver nos héros dans ce dernier tome qui promettait d'être épique dans le sens où NIL n'avait pas encore dit son dernier mot et que cette île hors du commun allait laisser une marque indélébile sur certains personnages et sur un en particulier. La tension est à son comble et on va retenir notre souffle jusqu'à la toute dernière minute.
je termine cette saga conquise car Lynne Matson a su me tenir en haleine tout au long de ses 1400 pages. Chaque tome nous apporte son lot de personnages emblématiques, d'énigmes à résoudre , de pièces de puzzle à assemble. Le message finale de cette métaphore qu'est NIL est très agréable et très porteur d'espoir

Since I wanted to know the end of this series that I loved, that's done.
Rives and Skye thought they had destroyed Nile, but she resisted. Back on this island they will not be quiet until it is completely destroyed. She will have to face her own nightmares to do so, but with help. New arrivals are coming, who will survive? The stakes have never been higher in this third part of the saga.
A third and last book read almost all at once, so much I was eager to know the end, so addictive, captivating, full of suspense and twists and turns.
Hurry for the author to write another series.

This book took me a while to finish because the size intimidated me and I kept putting it back down to reread it. If you've never read the series, this will be a shock to you. But I'm so glad I finished the series. It was a satisfying ending and filled with so much hope, heart, action, world building and philosophy on life that really makes you think.

Serinin tüm kitaplarına 3 yıldız verdim çünkü bir şeyler eksik geldi bana. Karakterlere bağlanamadım, olayların sebeplerini mantıklı bulamadım (Olaylar hayal ürünü elbette ama bir şeyleri gerekçelendirirken daha kaliteli açıklamalar beklerdim.) ve sonuç olarak kafa dağıtmak için okunabilecek bir seri olduğuna karar verdim. Kafa dağıtmak için her kitabı kalın (yaklaşık 500 sayfa) olan bir seriyi tercih eder misiniz orasını bilemem tabi. Kitapların kalınlığı yazarın her şeyi uzatma sevdasından kaynaklanıyor maalesef ki. 480 sayfalık bir kitabın yarısından az bir kısmında dişe dokunur şeyler oluyor ve bu üzücü. Seri su gibi akıyor ama ona lafım yok.
14-18 yaş aralığındakilerin okumasını tavsiye ediyorum. Şahsen ben daha küçük bir yaşta okusaydım daha çok beğeneceğime eminim.

Nil on Fire in the final book in the Nil trilogy. If you have not read the Nil series, it’s worth reading. It has a tropical island setting and has romance, action and survival. The island of Nil is only traveled to and from by gates. There are lot of deadly animals there, and some people. You only get one year to try and catch a gate, or you die. I would recommend this series to fans of shows like Lost, Naked and Afraid, Man vs Wild and other shows with survival and islands. Also fans of books like Madman’s Daughter, Lord of the Flies, Catching Fire, and The Forsaken by Lisa M. Stasse. Spoilers on the previous two books ahead.
Skye and Rives may have escaped Nil, but Nil is still haunting Skye. She hears Nil calling her in her dreams. She thinks Nil wants her to end the islanders’ tradition of crossing through the gate. Skye, Rives, Thad and Charlie go the island that holds the gate to Nil. Nil pulls Skye through the gate to the island she never intended to return to. Rives and Thad end up going through the portal to. Also, Paulo’s cousin, Lana goes though, and another ex-Nil resident, Zane.
Nil isn’t the same as when they left it. It seems crueler. The only one they left behind was Paulo, who says he lost time and that’s why he didn’t go through. More teens have showed up on Nil since them. The Icelandic guy, Hafthor, the fierce Amara, the running-back from Alabama, Calvin, two Australians who already knew each other, Molly and Davey. And that’s just the ones Paulo met. It seems Nil’s been busy. Skye, Rives and the other have 3 months until the stationary gate opens and they working on solving the mysteries of Nil and form a plan on how to destroy. This book in on fire and stuff trly goes down in this awesome finally.
This final book is told in alternating perspectives on Rives and Sky mainly, much like Nil Unlocked, but it have 3rd person point of views of other characters as well as the island’s POV itself. The island is alive, almost like it’s a goddess or something. Having these other POVs adds to the story telling and lets us see what’s going on elsewhere. I really wish we got Thad and Charlie’s 1st person POVs too, like in the first book. The first book felt more like a standalone and the next two like a companion duology.
I do like that there’s more paranormal stuff added to the story. Skye and Rives can communicate telepathically ever since they left Nil the first time. Some other characters share connections too. There’s also this ability called the Sight. Lana says that it’s only gift to women. Ramia had it.
All in all, I enjoyed this series and really would love to read more books with awesome island settings. I’ve never been to any tropical islands or even the ocean. Nil is definitely not an island I’d like to visit.

Skye and Rives may have escaped Nil, but Nil is still haunting Skye. She hears Nil calling her in her dreams. She thinks Nil wants her to end the islanders’ tradition of crossing through the gate. Skye, Rives, Thad and Charlie go the island that holds the gate to Nil. Nil pulls Skye through the gate to the island she never intended to return to. Rives and Thad end up going through the portal to. Also, Paulo’s cousin, Lana goes though, and another ex-Nil resident, Zane.
Nil isn’t the same as when they left it. It seems crueler. The only one they left behind was Paulo, who says he lost time and that’s why he didn’t go through. More teens have showed up on Nil since them. The Icelandic guy, Hafthor, the fierce Amara, the running-back from Alabama, Calvin, two Australians who already knew each other, Molly and Davey. And that’s just the ones Paulo met. It seems Nil’s been busy. I can't believe that this series is over. I've spent so much time thinking about Nil and being on Nil that I'm going to feel a lonely without it. What I just loved most about this book was all the point of views. We have been used to two point of views but this book we had just about all the major players. The best point of view ever was Nil. Oh yes you heard me Nil has a point of view in this book. I nearly passed out of joy to hear this mysterious point. I always thought Nil was a major player but to actually get to hear her point of view gave me chills. I found the writing to be spectacular and the story flowed nicely. I can't believe the author was able to switch the point of views and not miss a beat. It was perfect. It was the perfect ending and wrapped all my major plot twists. It is super sad to see it finish but it was the best ending any fan could ask for.
My favorite character was actually Hafthor. He is new and intriguing. There is something about this character that you are immediately drawn to. He is a little odd but you get the feeling that each word that he says is useful. He is quiet and calculated. I just didn't get enough of him. I laughed so hard when he said his joke. My second favorite character was Paolo. I felt for him and kind of liked him book 2 but now holy moly has he changed. He is a new and improved version of himself. He went from being scared to running the island. He is a interesting character that I feel evolved the most over the series.
Overall I fell in love with Nil and my heart belongs to it. It was such a great series and I am going to recommend it to everyone. I will miss it terribly but I promise to visit. If you are looking for a new and interesting series that has it incredible than this book is for you.
