I had heard of only 4 of the 12 child captives described here: Esther Wheelwright, Eunice Williams, Mary Jemison, and Cynthia Ann Parker. The others, Tom Brown, Regina Leining, Fanny Slocum, Horatio Jones, Joseph Brown, John Tanner, Oliver Spencer, and Matthew Brayton, were new to me. Some of these people ended up leading very happy lives, either with the Indians or back with their white families. Others, like John Tanner and Cynthia Ann Parker, led sad lives. I read this book in elementary school in the '70s while in an "Indian history" phase that also included Anglo-centric accounts of Daniel Boone and General Custer. While the thoughts of those books make me cringe, I recalled that this book humanized an all too frequently villainized or sentamentalized subject.
