A Dictionary of Marxist Thought

Rate this book
A Dictionary of Marxist Thought is an indispensable guide for anyone who wants to be reliably informed about a doctrine that plays a major role in shaping the present-day world. Part dictionary and part encyclopedia, it provides the reader with clear discussions not only of the basic concepts of Marxism and analyses of different interpretations and criticisms, but also of the myriad schools and individuals that have contributed to forming the body of Marxist thought over the past century.

A very useful dictionary for all those who are curious to know more about Marxism. I got this book from Delhi's old book market and since then, I enjoyed referring to it time to time and sometimes, just random exploration of random words to further deepen my understanding about this school of thought and the notorious university it has become.

It felt a bit mad, reading a dictionary from cover to cover, but I have no regrets now that it's finished. Despite being 40 years old, the focus on thought keeps the discussion fresh even from a couple of decades' distance. Of course there are interesting bits, where just six years before the collapse of the Soviet Union, none of the authors seemed to consider that a realistic scenario. But mostly the book provides a comprehensive glimpse into different traditions of Marxist thought and their sometimes frayed connections with the founders.

This isn't a book you're likely to want to read straight through. It's obviously a reference work but skimming through it or looking up something you're reading about (in Marxist works or generally) you will usually find what has been said on the topic by the founders and major continuators of Marxism, with quotes and suggested additional reading. You will find useful references to some of the schools of thought within Marxism from the Frankfurt School to Trotskyism. It has "see" and "see also" references, but it still may take a little creative thinking to find what you're looking for.

Extraordinarily useful for the Marx vs. "Marxists" confusion. Well researched and seems, as much as my BS detector can tell, fair to all of the major schools / thinkers that have made relevant contributions / interpretations.
