First off, I gave this book an extra star because it was well written. But I couldn't relate with any of the characters, particularly the main character "Denie." I have to see and feel the struggle in the character to be able to connect with them even though later on I saw that she had some struggle with romantic relationships, that part didn't go deep enough into the struggle for me. I have to feel the depth of the struggle, the visceral parts of it that way I could understand why she was so g ...more

I did want to give this a better try, but this was a little bit "lighter" than I expected. I skimmed through a good bit of it in the middle and end. It was mainly the writing style that I had a hard time concentrating on (for instance, Denie seemed to have to explain WHY she did everything). Also, I found it a little frustrating that she wouldn't find out if Tom was a Christian before she went on a first date, instead of just hoping he'd turn out good. I realize that later on that was clear what ...more

Sometimes I felt as if the MC was a teenager and not a grown woman. Icing was a average type of book for me, just because it was written in a somewhat redundant manner. In several paragraphs I noticed that it seemed as if the chapters would end but they didn't until 2-3 pages later.

I liked Icing because it was a light, quick, clean, enjoyable, Christian read. I felt as if I was reading a Hallmark movie which was a nice change of pace from my previous completed reads. The

This was a relatively short, and very sweet read. This is the type of story that makes me go aww! Teenage girls and women of all ages are apt to enjoy this story. A good, clean, and CHRISTIAN read.

The book “Icing” by Debra Sue Brice is a Christian romance book. Denie Shaw is perfectly content being single and running her hockey themed cupcake shop. When her hockey star crush, Tom Billingsly, shows an interest in her, she begins to rethink being single. Denie has to decide if she is ready for a romance with her dream guy.
I thought “Icing” was a good story. I liked that Brice made Denie into such a strong female character. Denie knew what she wanted and what she did not want in a relationsh

Icing is quite an enjoyable clean romance with some Christian elements. The story is told in the first person by Denie herself, which helps readers to get inside her head a bit. She comes across as a slightly quirky awkward woman, but she has a real crush on (ice) hockey star Tom. The characters and setting of the book are nice, and Denie’s cupcake shop is interesting. She certainly has a passion for cupcakes and comes up with some crazy and unusual flavours. Tom is a lovely guy, and any woman w ...more

Icing by Debra Sue Brice is a lovely, deliciously sweet romance of a young, strong business woman who has found success in the world of baking and owning a cupcake shop called Icing. This novel was very captivating from the very beginning to the very end. A different type of romance novel, one that was built upon how hard it is for someone to build back the trust that someone else lost.

The main character was a woman who was very relatable to the average woman who has been scorned by past relationships. She was quirky and lovable, and at sometimes laugh out loud funny. I remember two specific times I cringed for her, and then couldn't help but to laugh at her expense.

Icing was a sweet and clean Christian read and I enjoyed it very much. Denie was a cute and relatable protagonist and I could really understand her feelings. Her little obsession with Tom was also very cute and I enjoyed their budding romance. Reading about her getting to know the hockey player was like watching a girl's dream come true. Some people might criticize the lack of conflict, but I liked the lack of too much drama or poorly constructed conflicts. It had just the right amount of funny ...more

Isn’t it always the case when we decide to ‘swear off’ something, like dating, or men, or giving up sweets to try a new diet/fad that suddenly, that which we swore off, comes by, looks up at us with its hopeful eyes, and we fall head over heels before we remember we swore off said thing, and the reason why we did it in the first place??

As was the case for Denie. She decided, after her last relationship completely drained her, that she was done. She didn’t want to fall in love and have her heart

Such a charming story. Pleasantly reminiscent of a Rosemond Du Jarden book. I loved Pam and Penny as a teenager and Denie and her friends are just as engaging. Icing is a sweet and wholesome romance. Denie's constant introspection is reflective of the many young women who have been led to believe by today's media that they are an anomaly. It is great to read about a modern woman who holds to her Christian values. Great story! I highly recommend this book to the YA reader.

To be honest, I have never read a Romance Novel in its entirety before, and was extraordinarily surprised at how much I enjoyed reading this one. In fact, I couldn't put it down because it was so engaging and so easy to read. It is packed with numerous little twists and turns, surprises, and plenty of humor along the way. The characters and their interactions are so real and well crafted that they allow the reader to simply let go, and immerse themselves in the story. The author does an expert j ...more

Icing is the story of a contemporary romance with characters drawn to ancient mores. Do these ancient rules still mean anything? Can they be applied today? Well, yes. Just ask Debra Sue Brice and her surrogate voices, Denie Shaw and Tom Billingsly.

What do cupcakes, ice hockey, camping and Mexican food have to do with “the two shall become one?” More than you may think.

Thanks to Debra for giving us further encouragement in an enjoyable story.

Loved this book about a fun-loving Christian woman who owns and operates a cupcake shop called "Icing". You find out why and what this refers to as you read on. (pretty clever reason!) Denie makes these amazing flavored cupcakes (yes, you'll be craving them when you're done with the book) and is content with having crazy adventures with her sister and other friends...that is until she meets her major crush, Tom Billingsly from the Cleveland Lake Erie Monster hockey team.

I love the way the whole story revolves around the cupcake shop which is a big part of Denie's life. It reminds me of the movie Chocolat, starring Johnny Depp and Juliette Binoche. A big part of Denie's life are her closest companions - her sister and two other friends. I enjoyed reading about them walking in and out of Denie's life as they help out at the cupcake shop. The whole setting around the cupcake shop has been well developed.

Another interesting aspect of the story is that it is told in

This was a good romance novel which I enjoyed reading. I read Debra Sue Brice's debut, Crossing Boarders earlier this year, so I was happy to read another of her books. It was very exciting to see how this author has grown and developed as a writer. I liked the story and main characters Denie and Tom, it was great to watch their romance blossom. I especially liked some of the fun activities they did on their dates, such great proof that you're never too old to play like a kid! I thought it was r ...more

Icing is a sweet romance about a woman who fights with her insecurities about relationships. The book is mostly told through a lot of introspection. Tom seemed so perfect that there really wasn't anything to dislike about him. He wasn't a knight in shining armor or a bad dude turned good. It seemed laid back but lacked some fire. I think Tom seemed so perfect that it was untrustworthy. I kept expecting him to show up with another kid but that didn't happen.

Denie is okay as the heroine but her in

What if your celebrity crush suddenly asked you out on a date?
That's the shock, Denise (Denie) receives when hockey player #29 Tom shows an interest in getting to know her better. But Denie has a problem, she's had her heart broken too many times to believe a man is seriously interested.
Can Denie break the walls she built around her heart to trust Tom's feelings for her? Is she willing to take that risk, even when their relationship is put to the test?

Christian lit is not what I usually read, so I had a bit of a rough start with Icing. I felt a bit like Denie had a tendency to get long-winded, but I really loved the romance between her and Tom. Tom was always so sweet and I really loved that Denie always prayed about their relationship. I hated the part where she and Tom started having problems (who wouldn't??), but I felt like the reasons he gave her were legit concerns on his part, especially since she is such a devoted Christian and he see ...more

This such a wonderful, fun book. We all dream of that celebrity that steals our hearts and this book brings that story to life! Denie and Tom are fun, enjoyable characters and to read their story was refreshing. It's reminder that faith and God are so important in our lives and the decisions we need to make every day. It's hard to let go and let Him be in charge, and this book helps to remind us to do just that. Debra Sue Brice brings the characters to life with her writing. I highly recommend t ...more

Icing

Love the story of Denie and Tom, he plays on a Hockey team and she is his biggest fan. She owns a cupcake shop, she loves to create new flavors. This book made me hungry for cupcakes. The author is new to me, I am so glad I read it. Enjoyed it so much, great characters.

4.5 stars because I really liked/loved it, so 4 here and 5 on Amazon. This is a charming Christian romance that reads like a memoir, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The circumstances of the couple's meeting, their careers, and their dating situations are different from any other romance I've read. I recommend this novel for a refreshing change of pace, unless you've already read a romance in which the man is a professional hockey player and the woman owns a cupcake business! Let me begin by saying this is my first venture into a book of this kind. I’ve never read a contemporary romance before so going into this I was somewhat curious if I would feel out of place. To Ms. Brice’s credit, it is impossible to not feel welcomed into the world of her story. Told from the point of view of Denie, a cupcake store owner, the reader is treated to Denie’s innermost thoughts. This gives the novel a conversational and personable feel, and quickly pulls you into Denie’s life and t ...more
