During brain surgery, the first black Pope (real name ? Alendi Mahbooto) undergoes a near-death experience. He receives a clear message from Christ which imbues him with new understanding, inner strength and determination. The Church must use its vast resources, including the Vatican Treasures, to help the sick and the poor of the Third World, other Christian religions must do so as well. (many thousands of children under 5yrs of age die each day) The Catholic Church should also change its outdated policies on artificial contraception, celibacy, and women in the Church.

After receiving the divine inspiration, the Pope must implement vast changes to the Church, changes which alienate Cardinals from the developed world, as well as powerful nations and dark forces within the Vatican."

The Annointed One is an unusual book. It does not fit the category of light holiday reading, however it provides readers with an interesting fictional story in which the characters deliver them a clear unapologetic message. The main character, Alendi Mahbooto, has risen from extremely humble beginnings in rural Southern Rhodesia, to take on one of the most powerful positions in the world. As the first black Pope he sets a course to "right the wrongs" of the Catholic Church, especially in respect of their effect in third world countries. Opposition to his idealistic philosophy is not only fierce, but corrupt. He makes enemies on the way.
This is a book that encourages thought and discussion. Readers may not agree with all proposals put forward by this radical free-thinking Pope. No solution will provide an end to all injustice in the world but here the author creates possibilities which allow our minds to at least envisage a better world.
