Burdened with passions, resentments and unhappiness Jennifer’s extended family is arriving at her house in France for a holiday. When they leave she will give them modest gifts that will put their already fragile relationships into meltdown. Alec’s love affair with Jennifer’s son is to become one of the casualties. In his desperation to retrieve the relationship he finds himself out of his depth as the lies mount up. But the sweet, reliable Alec is forced to discover that the arts of lying and money laundering have their uses.
‘Now, how does the lovely Jennifer disguise her money?’ says Alec confidently, ‘Let me count the ways. Dollars under the wallpaper? Diamonds hammered into the floorboards? Old masters sewn into the curtains? Cocaine in the U bend?’ No, she’s far cleverer than that.

The characters were the strongest part of the story, the author working particularly well with speech.’ Male reader, aged 52 ‘Most interesting character: Jennifer. Author’s strongest skill: characterization. Loved the cover too!’ Female reader, aged 61 Fascinating. ‘A fascinating insight into the complexity of the family. A finalist and highly recommended,’ The Wishing Shelf Book Awards
I really enjoyed this book and it was a perfect holiday read with enough suspense to be interesting and keep the pages turning, but not too intense or heavy. The plot had a few twists and turns and kept me guessing right up until the end. It was well written and the characters were beautifully depicted and when I reached the end of the book felt that I wanted to know more about them and what they were going to do next with their lives. I hope there will be a sequel .....
Great story! What a mix of characters - and all very well portrayed. So much subterfuge and different accounts told to different people that it really keeps you guessing. I don't feel I can say much more than that without giving too much away. A good read. This is my voluntary review in return for a free copy of the book.
Thus book was given to me and I am voluntarily writing a review. I was hesitant to keep reading because I had the impression this was one of those sweet family sagas that a holiday together solves all. Boy, was I wrong. Family relations are covered but in an intriguing way. Be sure to stay to the end.
The idea, the book's premise, of how the family inheritance (good or bad) is hidden and passed on, is really clever and surprising. The characters come alive as you get deep into the book. I came away feeling entertained and satisfied. Good job.
A complex and fascinating story of a family who are anything but straightforward and honest with each other. Without giving the game away the person who should hold things together is surprisingly devious providing lots of unexpected turns that make you want to keep reading. The characters are well written and believable with a nice rhythm to the story line. Actually there are several threads to follow that add to the intrigue. There were plenty of 'wow, I didn't expect that' moments as you, like the family members, try to make sense of the unexpected events. The book will not fail to capture you and is an interesting and compelling read. I hope there is a sequel as I'm sure there is more to this tale! I really really enjoyed it - more please!
Good characterisation for an intriguing plot that keeps you turning the pages: what happens when your life plan suddenly has a big upset. Perceptive reflection on relationships formed within extended families and the conflicts and friendships that arise. Definitely worth reading.
A complex web of family relationships in a background of skullduggery. This gradually reveals itself as you read the book and the characters open up. all is not as it seems. An unusual and quirky plot, it kept me hooked till the end.
