The modern apologetics classic that started it all is now completely revised and updated--because the truth of the Bible doesn't change, but its critics do. With the original Evidence That Demands a Verdict, bestselling author Josh McDowell gave Christian readers the answers they needed to defend their faith against the harshest critics and skeptics. Since that time, Evide ...more

From the outset of the massive undertaking that Evidence That Demands A Verdict has taken, Josh McDowell has been about sharing the word of God. “Evidence is not for proving the word of God, but rather for providing a reasoned basis for faith,” claims McDowell.

The original Evidence was drawn up from a deep struggle Josh shares regarding the tough years he faced, and no doubt our own youth will face, while at college. Mad at God and mad at past abuse, Josh took up a challenge to consider the Chri

The updated classic is the new standard in apologetics. As good as the original Evidence that Demands a Verdict (ETDAV) was, this updated and revamped edition is even better. With new sections on the historicity of Jesus' existence, evaluations of the historical data, updated scientific information, and new updated stats on biblical manuscript evidence; this updated addition with insights from Dr. Sean McDowell makes this revision of ETDAV a must-have for anyone serious about Christian Apologeti ...more

When I first heard that the father-son duo was updating Evidence That Demands A Verdict, I was excited by the prospect, but wondered if the updated edition was worth the investment. Is there enough of a difference between the original version of the book and the new edition to justify the purchase?

The answer is a resounding yes!

The new edition of Evidence That Demands A Verdict has been completely updated and revised to include thorough revisions, updates, and entirely new chapters that defend t

I'll say right up front that I didn't read this entire book. It is 7 pages short of being 800 pages, and is basically a resource book. It is not light reading.

That is not to say it isn't interesting though. Josh McDowell knows his stuff when it comes to apologetics, and this book is full of some great information on how to answer skeptics. Though I did not read every page, I skimmed what I did not read, and there is a lot of good "stuff" in these pages. With his son's help, McDowell has expand

I never got around to previous versions of Evidence but was excited to dig into this new edition. I was not disappointed. This book has quickly taken the place of others as my most recommended read for skeptics or those struggling with their faith. The book is a massive hulk of a book but there is absolutely no filler. This book is cram packed with evidence based chapter that explore all the major claims of Christianity. Not only is the book a massive resource and reference manual for those apol ...more

Excellent apologetics book. Do you know how to defend your faith? How we came to get the Bible? What evidence there is to prove the Bible is accurate? This and MANY more issues are covered in this book. It is HUGE, at almost 800 pages. It's not light reading. It takes time to sit and read this and digest the information.
It's sure to become to go to book in many libraries. I highly recommend it.
I received an advance copy for free for my honest review of this book

This is an update to the original. Great book. Very good resource to have. Great for teaching in any setting. I'm a fan of this book and hope many more will become one. Don't pass up this book. I will state that this is not an easy read it's more along the lines of apologetics's!!

This is an updated version of the classic apologetics book that brought many people to life-changing faith in Christ. The book is more important today than ever before with the onslaught of fake news, postmodernism, relativism and universalism, even in the church. The truth of God has not changed, but the evidence pointing to it has as technological and scientific advances have revealed even more about the truth of God's Word. Josh and Sean McDowell have successfully taken on the monumental task ...more

A Solid Resource for Apologetics, Discipleship, and Serious Study!

Though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. The weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down ARGUMENTS and every high thing that exalts itself against the KNOWLEDGE OF GOD, bringing EVERY THOUGHT into captivity to the obedience of Christ (2nd Corinthians 10:3-5).

Who needs this book?
The atheist, agnostic, or Non-Christian who is intellectually honest an

Evidence That Demands A Verdict is one of the best apologetics books on the market. It's a thick book, but that's only because the authors cover a lot of ground. In the prologue, they do an overview of the arguments for the existence of God (e.g The Kalam Cosmological Argument, The Fine-Tuning Argument, The Moral Argument), and in chapter 1, they clear away some common objections to the Christian faith that people have, such as Christians all being hypocrites and the church being responsible for ...more

Josh and Sean McDowell have teamed up along with a small army of researchers to bring us a fantastic resource attesting to the reliability of God’s word and the truth of the Christian faith. Evidence That Demands a Verdict is a treasure trove of facts, testimonies, and sources covering numerous areas of Christian apologetics and theology. Josh opens the book with a moving account of his own journey to faith (one I’ve been privileged to hear in person). It’s a journey where evidence such as that ...more
"Evidence That Demands a Verdict" is a collection of evidence that helps believers have confidence and unbelievers see that there is a reasoned, factual basis to Christianity. I've owned previous editions of this book, the latest being the 1999 version. This book has been updated to include the latest discoveries and arguments as well as commentary at the beginning from Sean McDowell. While much of the core evidence is the same, there has been some rewriting and changes made as the new informati ...more

John McDowell and Sean McDowell's Evidence that Demands a Verdict: Life-Changing Truth for a Skeptical World is now completely updated and revised, to reflect some of the important changes over the recent years.

I first read this book (then a two-volume edition) back in the '80s. I was impressed with some of the material in it, even if I remained slightly unconvinced. In the 30 years since, McDowell's now-classic in apologetic literature has given critics quite a bit to mull over. With the huge p

The Christian faith has been under attack since the very start of it. By either trying to deny the resurrection of Christ or to claim that Christ never said He was God, antagonists have tried their best to discredit and malign Christianity. Some have managed to turn followers of Christianity away from their faith believing that no evidence exists to support their beliefs.

Josh McDowell and his son Dr. Sean McDowell have updated the classic work Evidence that Demands a Verdict. This work is design

Newly updated, this book has presented the evidence for the Christian faith for nearly half a century. Not only do the authors present a mountain of evidence, but they have done it in a scholarly manner. No side-stepping, no eloquent verbage, just straight forward, factual evidence that must be reckoned with. The authors have not just dealt with minor critics for every issue of contention, they have taken on the most serious challenges against the Christian faith head on. Their conclusions are s ...more

Good in general.

I do have a few complaints, however.

In many places McDowell & son seem to embrace theological liberalism. For example, they include “perspectives” on inspiration that remove innerancy (though they make clear that they themselves believe in inerrancy). One chapter was about interpretations of Genesis. Some perspectives were included that made Gensesis into just plain myth.

I would be yet more conservative than they when it comes to NT scholarship. I would date the Gospels earli

Whew! I finished it. 42 hours of deep philosophical discussion! Although there is no way that I could retain and process all of the information , it was interesting to hear some of the opposing views to the validity of our Christian beliefs. Some people go to great length to disprove Scripture. I wonder who they are trying to convince? Those who believe or themselves?
I believe that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God. For reasons only He knows, He has left it up to us to believe in faith. Who

Yes, this is a total rewrite of the original, though dropping a few items rarely brought up these days. Which was in two volumes, and was more of an outline, or sermon notes in style. This goes to great and detailed length, covering every aspect of apologetic on the Bible itself as well as touching on a few extra-biblical details. Yet is written in more easily grasped style like a regular book. It is more even handed, giving space to other possible explanations. And while it is a long book, peop ...more

The new Evidence Demands a Verdict is Life Changing. It is well written . It is written for skeptics as well as those that have been Christians. It is written for singles, families, young and old. The book addresses the issues we are confronted in our culture today as Christians. The topics you will find discusses are : did Jesus rise from the dead, is the Bible real, post modern issues, why would Jesus allow suffering, what happens to those who do not hear the gospel message, is Jesus real, Is ...more

Having read many apologetics books, I can heartily recommend this one as the best defense of the historicity of the Bible I have ever read. As laid out early in the book, this is meant to be a reference book and teaching to embolden and equip Christians with an "apology" for their faith. This book is organized superbly down to each section and subsection so you can always find what you are looking for and has synthesized thousands of resources to layout logically and simply the evidences for his ...more

Josh and Sean McDowell painstakingly go through the bible and arguments for and against Christianity using the same tools historians use to determine the historicity of any ancient text.

The two have a dog in this fight as both are Christian, Josh (the father) was converted to Christianity when challenged to debunk the faith, Sean followed in his father's footsteps.

Sceptic of the faith or not, McDowell has put together a scholarly work that examines the evidence for the faith and presents several

I would definitely rate this a 5 Star book but it won’t be for everyone. It’s very in-depth and quite long. If you’re looking for a very thorough analysis of Christianity then this book is for you! If you’re just trying to determine if Christianity makes sense I’d go with an easier but extremely convincing read like Tim Keller’s Reason for God or Gregory Koukl’s The Story of Reality. Thank you Josh McDowell for in large part starting a powerhouse of competent apologists.

Great reference book! I am certainly going to refer to this book in the future as it answers the significant challenges to the Bible. I was also happy to see the salient arguments for the trinity laid out in this book. I reject the trinity as an abhorrent pagan doctrine but it is good to see the arguments of the other side laid out if I ever need a refresher of where trinitarians are coming from. In all, very happy with my purchase.

This is a new version of a classic book - answering questions and addressing new information for the authenticity of the Bible, archaeology, the resurrection of Christ and the apparent conflicts in science and the Bible. Having read the first edition of this book nearly 40 years ago and referring to it in multiple ways, this is a must read for anyone with questions about the veracity of the Bible and the claims Jesus makes.

Love it! It is so full of "proofs" that it will be a primary tool for my sharing with non-believers.
I read the original one years ago by Josh and loved it then; but this is so much more indepth an the writing is easy to follow and the formatting is great. It is truly a bargain for the amount of material in it and the veracity of it.

A classic updated for today. This is a must have on every bookshelf. Josh and Sean take the most up to date evidence available and combine it into one solid reference book. Whether reading to strengthen your faith or as a skeptic looking for the truth about Christianity, this book has it all. As the title says, the evidence presented within these pages demands a verdict.

Okay. Preface, this book is a massive tome of double columned thorough apologetics. It gives what it promises in argument/ counterargument form with excerpts taken from the literature/sources and imbedded within the paragraph of topic, with nice summaries I might add, as the specific language of philosophers, historians, skeptics, scientists ranges from technical to profusely dense jargon. I like it because the sequence the authors took in relation to how the topics and understanding would build ...more

This is an amazing book that cemented my faith when I was a new Christian. Now years later, this book has been updated in a great way. It retains what makes it a classic and becomes more relevant for this time. I greatly recommend this book!

Excellent collection of "primary sources". Well documented where reader can consult the overall context from which the quote was taken. This will dis-spell the criticism that the "quote was taken out of context." Very useful reference work. Very reasonable price!!!

Very thorough

If you are looking for more information on the Bible and believing in God, this is your book. It is very long, however, the author(s) have done their research and is worth the read.
