This true story of a Navy intel service member and the Iraqi interpreter she fell in love with reads like a spy novel. It's one part current events, one part wartime romance and altogether engaging.

I highly recommend it!

An absolute MUST READ that would make an excellent movie!
A Foreign Affair is an authentically-written true story of falling in love. It happens when you least expect it and in the most dramatic settings. Amanda and Fadi are such an inspirational couple and wonderful parents. What God brings together, let no man tear asunder. When He intends for you to be together no man, no ruler, no agencies—no matter how powerful—can keep you apart.

In a different kind of Romeo and Juliet, Amanda Matti’s memoir, A Foreign Affair reads more like a novel than a true account. Written in first person, we view the world through a young Navy woman’s perspective with humor, courage, amazement, discovery, charity, hope, and, of course, love. Amanda’s determination to shake up her mundane life and to escape a hopeless relationship leads her to Iraq on a volunteer mission for the NSA and into a battle taking place in her heart, not in the war zone. I hate love stories, so I was dreading having to read this for book club. Despite the eye roll inducing proclamations of undying love between two people who literally just met, I actually enjoyed the book. The author provided insight into the life of a deployed service member during the 2nd Iraqi war. More importantly, she successfully portrayed Iraqi civilians not simply as "enemies," but as sympathetic human beings forced to live in a war zone and tasked with rebuilding their country, both lit ...more

3-1/2 to 4 stars. Reads like fiction. Although the reader can debate the judgment of the author, this is an amazing, layered account of perseverance and love with insights into how Americans used and treated Iraqi citizens; with the internal control battle among Shia vs Shiite.

The love-story element of this memoir was what hooked me initially, but it was mid-book, where the story moved into the realm of suspense, when I became hooked so tightly that I stayed up into the wee hours of the morning, reading the entire last half of the book in one sitting.

As a former Navy service member who has been deployed to Iraq, I thoroughly enjoyed Amanda sharing the sometimes unglamorous truth and incongruities of what it was like to be there in the early years of the conflict. Lik
