The first installment in the trilogy of The Broken, Elysium is the debut novel of young fiction writer, K. B. Ezzell. In the year 2114, North America has evolved into a wealthy and powerful empire under the rule of a man determined to create perfection by whatever means necessary. Terra Drake has spent a secluded childhood shielded by her parents from the truth of the world she lives in, until she is chosen at age seventeen to be a part of an exclusive project, designed by the Emperor himself, to make gods out of exceptional people. Terra is transported to a mysterious fortress on the sea and introduced to a world of ideas from which she was previously hidden, fantastical science that is beyond mere imagination, and an enigmatic stranger who defies both logic and expectations. She quickly falls in love with the perfect blue skies surrounding intellectual oasis and finds she is truly happy among the most exceptional people in the universe. But with true happiness always comes the thundering notion that is just might be too good to be true. And there is a price that must be paid for ignorance.

When I first read the title I expected a great book. By the time I was at the end of the first page I was blown away with how well written it was. I feel in love with the characters and was fully engulfed in the story. At the end of the book I was hungry for more, dying to know what happens next and just praying that Terra and Ether fall in love. Love the aspect of adventure, romance, and the imagination. Totally one of the first fan girls!! Absolutely amazing.

Ezzell's story takes an unorthodox, but highly enjoyable road, telling a modern story in the form of classic literature. Obviously influenced by Brontë, her writing is ideal to sit and dreamily contemplate philosophy over a warm cup of coffee. But! The best part is the extended metaphor revelad in the last chapters of the novel. This work is a must read for any sort of literature aficionado.

I loved this book! It’s so creatively written and I felt like I was actually in the story and a part of that world.
I’m always very skeptical of fiction stories published in recent years. All too often they have the same plots, same generic character, the same old solutions, and the same old cheesy romances that are entirely too predictable. So going into this book I had my guard up. But I was pleasantly surprised! Ezzell wrote this book so well and so uniquely and I was always wondering what would happen next.
It is a book that I definitely do not regret having on my shelf for years to come!
