An oversize illustrated compendium of dogs from all over the world. What's amazing is that the breed-specific physical traits are drawn with such specificity, while employing Hergé-like illustration that shows humor and affection. The book is divided by dog types, such as Working Dogs, Herding Dogs, Toy Dogs, Mixed Breed Dogs, etc. Includes a section of puppies, where the reader can find the adult dog which corresponds to the puppy by following a meandering dotted line. An index of dog breeds with breed origins caps it off. You might think that you need a photographic guide to dog breeds, but this illustrated one delivers.

g2-4 for using alone, but definitely younger appeal one on one.
This is really a fabulous book. Friendly-style line drawings that are ever so slightly animated also accurate from what I can tell. Can't keep the encyclopedias of dogs on the shelf, so this will be popular too. The page where you follow the line to match the puppy to the adult is pretty inventive. I would put this with Elisha Cooper's Animal book - maybe called "Eight" as really neat. I don't even miss the photographs with either. Neat. Kids would love poring over.

I love dogs madly! This book of illustrations is so quirky and great. I like the classes that the dogs are separated into and the puppy chart is just too cute. The index has a fun little fact on each breed without being too overwhelming for kids. It was a must-buy for my juvenile nonfiction section.

I so wanted my son to like this book. Unfortunately, I couldn't even get him to look at it once. It sat sadly, waiting on a chance to be read and it didn't happen. I finally returned it to the library today. Not sure what he didn't like about it (because hello, he's three) but I tried. Maybe next year or in six months he'll like it better. It seems a cute book though the complaint I heard most about it was how off in size it was. Even on a two page spread dogs who should have been bigger than others were smaller. So do they really know dogs? I know it can't be perfect but there were some pretty glaring examples to all of my coworkers. And it was one of those things that once you notice, you can't quit noticing it.

Big book, little text. Kids love dogs, even just looking at pictures of them, which is really all they’re going to get out of this enormous book. The illustrator has managed to capture the unique personalities of dog breeds and hybrids. Information in the glossary on each breed, their origin, and talents. Unless you have an oversized collection or specific need, this book is big on size, not substance.

I am not a dog lover but I knew I had to read this book as soon as I saw it come through my library's bookdrop! The author has illustrated and organized all kinds of dog categories and it is most enchanting and engrossing! Somehow, having the dogs drawn, as opposed to photographs, is more interesting. I kept looking at the drawings over and over. Well done, sir!

This is just a big book full of different kids of dogs. Nothing more, nothing less. My boys loved this book. They have a little game that they can turn into any animal that has a letter from their name it it and this book was so fun for them to look through and find letters. So fun for them.

A dictionary of all (most) dog breeds. As a dog lover, I enjoyed looking at all the pictures. However, there is no story or facts about individual breeds. Excellent choice for families with children looking to get a new dog.

My only complaint is that the section with puppies can be difficult to follow - especially as the lines go from one side of the two-page spread to the other.

Jim Medway writes and illustrates this book which is meant for young readers. Divided into sections such as Working Dogs, Hound Dogs, Sporting Dogs and so forth, it was not what I expected (sections of little dogs and big dogs). The Puppies section features a dotted line between adult and pup, so children can see that not all puppies look like their parents. (However, the one example I did know about was not accurate. It showed a dachshund puppy with an extended snout, where, in reality, puppies have a snub nose.) The section on Mixed Breed Dogs includes such humorous names as Gollie (Golden Lab x Collie) and Bassetmation (basset x dalmation). The book ends with a Dog Breed Index, in which "fascinating facts about every dog breed" are explained. Readers will have to flip pages between the picture and the explanation of a dog. Illustrations are good, except for the dogs' faces, most of which have odd expressions on them. Children will enjoy browsing through the big format pages, looking for the dog they have or want to own. I am not sure the binding is up for the rough handling that's sure to ensue.
