The Dead Come Calling

Rate this book
I'm Zoe Thorne and I speak to the dead. Unfortunately, dead isn't always synonymous with good-natured. In fact, most of the spirits I meet have dirty minds and a tendency to create mischief and mayhem.

For the past two months, I've been traveling with the cast of The Wraith Files, a paranormal investigation web show. Stony and Blaine are like the perverted, annoying brothers I never had. Our boss, Malachi Flemming, well, he makes my heart beat faster and my hormones dance.

During a break from filming, I've returned home to my resident ghost, Teri, an exotic dancer who died thirty years ago. I'm on a mission to find the man who murdered her and see that justice is served.

Preoccupied with my search for a killer, I'm unaware that something dark and twisted lies in wait for me. Not one, but two faceless entities intent on terrorizing me before moving in for the kill.

With unseen enemies shadowing my every move, it's time to discover how deep my abilities run. I need every bit of power I possess...or I'll be taking my place among the dead.

*This book contains a perverted ghost, two men who act like teenage boys, and lots of sarcasm.

I must say, I'm really enjoying this series!!

I feel more comfortable labeling this book as a Paranormal Romance. At least more than doing so for the first one. Although the courtship was excessively mild IMO (Zoe was too awkward and prudish for my taste, especially given that she was 27 years old and no virgin), but at least it did exist and it was nice to see the development of Zoe and Mal's feelings despite the lack of passion. Maybe the next book will explore more of the actual relationship and Zoe will stop putting Mal off. Poor guy :(

There was a dark element to this story because the demon that was introduced in the first book made his presence known and felt in this one. Through that experience, we learn about mediums, psychics, witches and necromancers and the powers associated with each. We also witness how they work together to defeat evil. I'm hoping to learn more of this as the series progresses.

The writing, once again, was on point, which made it hard to put this book down. It was eerie, scary and spine-tingling fun. I really loved the camaraderie between the characters. The bond has only grown stronger between Mal, Zoe, Stony and Blaine and I'm excited for more adventures with The Wraith Files team.

Note: I'd really appreciate getting something from Mal's POV. He's a phenomenal character and I think he deserves his own shot in the spotlight.

My thoughts

This was a wonderful story to read and an excellent addition to "The Wraith Files" by C.C. Wood!
The story and writing were good, and once again the author has provided her readers with colorful and entertaining characters.
Teri is a hoot!
But, the best part of this story is the chemistry between Zoe and Mal.

 photo TDCC_Teaser1_IG.jpg

This is a slow burn romance and the characters in this book spend most of the time circling one another.

 photo TDCC_Teaser3_IG.jpg

I really enjoyed the secondary characters in this story, they added a lot of flare to the story.
A great read!
I look forward to reading the next book in the series!

SPOILER-ISH.

Something wicked comes this way…….

Zoe “the peculiar girl” Thorne is back home in Kenna, Texas after being on the road for a couple of months shooting the show The Wraith Files.

For once she is finally happy but just needs some well-deserved R & R. She has a family that accepts her for who she is and her relationship with her mom is also improving.

“Did my mom seem different to you?” I asked. “Oh yeah. She wasn’t as scary as usual.” I scoffed. “She’s not that bad.”” Jonelle shot me a sideways look. “You’re kidding right? Your mom would make the Third Reich tremble in their boots,” she retorted.

In book one we meet Teri, Zoe’s resident ghost, former stripper a funny, horny barrel of laughs full of mischief with a zest for life. After 30 years Teri has womaned up and wants to find out who killed her. It’s harder than it sounds due to the lack of digital files Zoe is unclear where to start.

Unknowingly at the same time of hunting down Teri’s murderer someone is out to hurt Zoe. They can’t figure out the what, who, and the why though. Zoe wakes to a full living nightmare where some kind of black oily clouded entity is trying to kill her. She couldn’t stop it but Teri saved the day.  This makes for a creepy read in some places or maybe I’m overly sensitive.

Mal comes to the rescue and also points her in the right direction. Teri’s murderer did a lot more damage than they first thought. I would have liked to have seen this case be put to rest somehow with the police. But I guess that is just me. Good things are happening a TV network is about to pick the show up they’ll gain major coverage.

Malachi and Zoe’s relationship develops. But although it is a slow development with sweet moments there is nothing hot and steamy that keeps you all bothered. What personally I would have liked to have seen is more of Mal. I feel as if we’re only scratching the surface when it comes to him and quite frankly that irritates me to hell.

“She called me a cock hopper again.” I nodded. “Fine,” Teri sniffed. “How about twatwaffle?” she asked. I twisted my head to glare at her with squinty eyes. She didn’t take the hint and needled me again. “Fuck truck? “How about Zoe’s best friend?” I asked. “Shit. Fine. I’ll call her Joblow, okay? That’s my final offer.”

Witch Coven from Fort Worth. Angela.

We find out more about what Zoe is and her abilities. Zoe is a necromancer. Magic similar to a witch’s but centered on death instead. You can call to them and control them and if legends are true bring them back to life. According to witch lore the last necromancer died a hundred years ago.

Ms. Wood is a highly underestimated author where she brings funny, unique and from pen to paper. Each character is individual and as a whole I’d loved to be friends with this bunch of crazy.

Book 2 in The Wraith Files and just as good as book 1 there is strong character development and a plot with twists and turns that keeps you sitting on the age of your seat. In this case you really shouldn’t judge a book by its cover.

I’m not going to give anything away the ending but it was epic and I would have been upset if Zoe hadn’t been able to fix what happened. I can’t wait to see how this series develops and what is in store for us next. Especially with a Witch’s Coven now included.

CC Wood does it again. This book delivered an incredible story that had me laughing one moment and a bit spooked the next. There was plenty of suspense as the gang works hard to solve a mystery for their resident ghost and the spook factor was perfect for keeping me on the edge.

The characters were as wonderfully entertaining as they were in book 1 and I can't help but just adore them all. I can't wait for the next part in their story. The ending in this one opens it up so much that, truly, anything can happen next!!

The Dead Come Calling was a bit darker than the previous book but there still were a lot of funny moments. The investigation of Teri's murder brought out many new and unexpected things about almost every character in the book. I loved the story—again, it was compelling and captivating and I can't wait to read more about these characters.

I really truly love C.C. Wood's paranormal romances. They are completely unique and mix exciting storylines with her trademark quick wit. The Dead Comes Calling has both of those and so much more. I personally recommend before starting this story that you go and read the first in the series, Don't Wake The Dead. Both books follow, Zoe, a medium, on her journey to learning more about the paranormal.

Zoe is now a full member of The Wraith Files, an online show about the paranormal, and she is in the beginning stages of a relationship with Mal, the guy in charge aka her boss. On top of all that she is trying to solve the murder of Terri, the somewhat horny ghost who haunts her house.

"Are you a real man, Malachi Flemming, or a robot programmed to tell a woman what she wants to hear?"

The Dead Come Calling was hilariously funny and the action kept the story moving at a fast pace. The chemistry between Zoe and Mal is undeniable and they had some pretty amazing make out sessions. I will warn you that this is not a book full of sex. That being said it is full of romance and with the antics of this cast of characters you really won't miss it at all.

All of this makes for a fun and suspenseful story that I just could not put down.

I am SO IN LOVE with this series!!! This is the 2nd book in author C.C. Wood's Wraith Files series. It sets up where the first book ended (but there are no cliffangers). We've got Zoe, who can see and talk to ghosts, who has just returned home after months of visiting various haunted places and filming videos with Mal (the hunky YouTube show director), along with sound and cameramen Stony and Blaine. Speaking of Zoe's home, she got it for a great price because it came with a ghost who has been haunting it for 30 years. Since Zoe can see and hear ghosts, Teri the ghost has become somewhat of a roommate/friend to Zoe, albeit a pesky perverted one who often insults Zoe's friends and loves to ogle handsome men. She is absolutely hilarious!

In this book, Teri the ghost asks Zoe to look into her murder 30 years ago, which was staged to look like a suicide. As usual, bad things seem to happen when Zoe pokes her nose into things she shouldn't, but there's also a dark power that's after her. Zoe learns more about her powers when new players enter the game and she finds again that having a house ghost can be very helpful! Like the previous book, this book has an HEA ending with no cliffhangers.

I'm enjoying this series so much and I can't WAIT to read the next installment of the Wraith Files by C.C. Wood!

I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.

I have to say this book was a little scary in parts, which I loved. In my past I've enjoyed reading horror novels and while I usually steer clear of paranormal stories, I'm really enjoying The Wraith Files.

In "The Dead Come Calling" Zoe is home during a break in filming of the show when she is attacked by an dark entity. We actually get snippets of the story from the entity so while Zoe and her gang are trying to figure out where it came from and what it wants, as the reader we have a clearer picture of the situation. At the same time, Zoe is investigating Teri's murder and also dealing with a growing romance with Mal.

With the introduction of a local witch Zoe starts to learn a little more about her abilities which I'm hoping to see explored more as the series moves on. I enjoyed the mixture of romance, mystery and spookiness and I look forward to more of The Wraith Files.

This is the second book in the series. The series MUST be read in order as these are NOT standalone. TDCC starts a couple of months after the first book ended. Zoe is now a full-fledged member of Mal's team, the chemistry between Mal and Zoe heats up, and the team is on the hunt for supernatural being they know nothing about. The tone of TDCC is more serious than the first is however there is still some humor to lighten the drama. I love the engagement between Zoe and her mom and the something that is shared between them; her moms' behavior begins to make sense.
The Dead Come Calling is a great addition to The Wraith Files universe. Can't wait to see what book 3 brings!!

As a self confessed non reader of the paranormal genre I always find myself at a bit of a loss with C.C. Woods books, there's something inherently special about her words, some magical culmination of her storylines, covers, and witty prose that have me so utterly invested that I can't put them down. The Wood Effect usually takes hold in the first chapters, it's in those initial pages that I forget about werewolves this and vampires that, it's when I don't even notice that a main character is a ghost, it's when I forget entirely that I have an aversion to the fantastical and just allow the Author to capture my imagination and take me wherever she pleases.

"I'm sick and tired of you using our working relationship as an excuse to deny our feelings for each other."
Right there is one of the many reasons I adore Wood's work, in between stories of fiction, some that absolutely profit on her ability to make believe is those brilliant reminders of the human condition. For those already introduced to the newest paranormal offering from Wood, you would of no doubt fondly remembered the slow burning chemistry of our hero and heroine. She created so wonderfully this smouldering connection between Mal and Zoe that it was palpable, you could feel it clawing it's way off the page, and yet much like it's predecessor, Don't Wake The Dead didn't rely on sexual intimacy to strengthen the story.

"I'm a man who knows what he wants and had the patience to wait for it."
I found myself devouring the pages, skimming in parts, not out of boredom but in desperation to know what came next, as the drama intensified, and the action increased I found myself restless and deliberately jumping ahead so I could get to the end quicker, for a usually fast reader, you can only imagine the utter excitement that was coursing through my veins as I absolutely devoured this book. Wood mixes her trademark wit with her ability to build tension perfectly here, Don't Wake The Dead was addictive, utterly impossible to put down. As Zoe frantically searched for Teri's murderer, and the pressure mounted, I found myself on the edge of the seat, yelling at my kindle like a childhood pantomime "look behind youuuuuuuu". Wood's latest offering was a breath of fresh air at a time when I find myself more and more underwhelmed by lackadaisical sex scenes that seem to only serve as filler. With a strong push toward character development and really crafting a story that I can't wait to continue, The Wraith Files has easily become one of my newest favourites.

I accepted a copy of the book for free and am giving this review voluntarily. This series by C.C. is absolutely one of my favorites!!! I was sooo excited when I found out the second book was FINALLY coming out!!!!! She did NOT disappoint at all!! The second book in this installment was JUST as good as the first if not maybe better than the first. Zoe's story continues on with same hilarity and creepiness as the first. Filled with snarkiness, scariness, possessions and bit of romance this book will make any paranormal lover extremely happy!! I do not want to give away any of the story because it is seriously that much fun...it is just packed full of entertainment and amazement.

I highly recommend this book, hell this whole series, to anyone who enjoys paranormal books. It is kitchy and spooky, the writing is great, it flows well and keeps you on the edge of your seat. I did not want to put it down and I CANNOT wait to read more from this author!!!

We're back with another adventure and if you thought last time with close to home this time it's even more so as Zoe works to find Teri's killer. The fact that it was ruled a suicide and is more than 30 years old males it difficult for her to make any real progress. Add to that a stalker leaving deadly gifts on her porch and a dark entity trying to kill her and Zoe's vacation from her six weeks on the road has just turned really crazy.

If you haven't read book one in the series previously I highly recommend reading it first. After reading it I had thought that we would begin to see her adventures on the road however I was pleasantly and excitedly surprised that book two was right back in her hometown and that the mystery was right in her own home.

I love Zoe's determination to help her friends even if it is a pervy dead stripper that she is trying to help. Seeing Teri again and her antics really brings in a lot of comic relief into what would otherwise have been a very serious book overall.

I enjoyed the storyline for this one and how everything came together and also how just when you think you know everything you get another twist to the characters or the story.

This is definitely a series that I am excited to continue reading and I can't wait for the next one!

You have got to read this book! That is if you read book one
already. This book was even better than the first. This book
is just as well written and thought through as the first. I even
learned a few things about the supernatural as well.

This book has Zoe coming home after a long few months at
work. Only to find out there is not only one entity, but two
evils after her. When a package is left on her doorstep on
her birthday she thought nothing of it. Until one night she
almost looses two of her friends. And this dark entity attacks
her in the middle of the night. Thank god for her resident
ghost, as she was the ony one able to save her. On the up
side Mal does not want to leave her side. Even sleeping in
her bed, just to hold her and keep her safe. Now if they can
just figure out who it is that is after her, and why. Mal enlist
help that gives Zoë some shocking news. Man I can wait to
read the next book.

Now before I ruin this for you I will leave off here. I hope you
enjoy this book as much as I did. If you do like this book,
please consider leaving a review. The Authors really like it
when you do; they value your opinions too.

I have to say this series is becoming a favorite. Book one reals you in, but book two builds an anticipation and need for more. It took a moment to get me full into it, but once it did I was blown away. The stories. The writer managed to create within this mystery intertwined beautifully leaving you second guessing what might be the end conclusion. I found myself on the edge of my seat wondering if Zoe would actual pull it off and conquer the evil, or would it lead to something bigger. I enjoyed the book even more knowing that C.C. Wood build such a climatic twist that has you wondering who, why, and "oh no" : o I wonder what will happen next in the series. Will Malachi and Zoe continue slow or pick it up, will Blaine, Stony, and Jonelle have romance connections blossom? Oh and let's not forget the resident ghost Teri. She has definitely captured my heart. So, all I want to say is looking forward to the next book in the series, and the new twist it will bring.

Teri. This book was all about Teri for me. I love her fiercely! She's sassy but she also cares about Zoe.

You need to read book 1, Don't Wake The Dead, for a variety of reasons. 1 - so you can get into Zoe and her life being someone who hears and sees dead people 2 - Malachi 3 - Teri and her sassy self and 4 - because it's a great book!

Zoe has been working on The Wraith Files show for a bit now and getting used to being "famous" and traveling and working with the guys all the time. And being away from Teri as she's tied to Zoe's house.

But like the title says, the dead come calling to Zoe's house and things happen. And that's all I'm saying. READ IT!

Another great book by C.C. Wood. ''The Wraith Files'' is becoming my favourite series. The Dead Come calling(They came calling alright) is the second book in the series.

The Dead come calling was an awesome read. I loved it so much I read it again. It was creepy, funny, and oh boi the suspense.

I thought I had some parts figured out, only to be hit with somethig els. But it was fun seeing the gang back together. And, Teri! She had me LOLing. ''Joblow'' That had me cracking up.

I can not wait for the next book in the series. I hope we get it sooner rather than later(I know C.C. has other books to write).

For better understanding start with the first book in the series Don't Wake the Dead

The Dead Come Calling by C.C. Wood

I did read the first book in the series but there was a good enough explanation at the beginning of the book that you could seamlessly start with this book.

Zoe, Mal, and the gang are back again in the second book of The Wraith Files series. This time a demon is attacking Zoe in her own home. Will the demon be banished or will it not stop until Zoe is dead?

This book was a quick read. I enjoyed how the story seamlessly picked up where it left off. The characters are very relatable and while content is supernatural, it seems real. The ending wrapped things up but also left it open ended for another book.

I'm actually giving this book a rating of 4.5 stars, because some of the terminology and kneading just sat wrong with me.

However, this book is the perfect late night, good time read! C.C did a fabulous job of creating suspense with hilarity in this nail biting story.

I'll have a full review up, once I have the quotes 'okay'd by the author to use, because Teri is hilarious, and I won't be able to do the review justice without some proof ;) this is one of the most highlighted books I've read in a long time!

Stay tuned

We pick up right where we left off after the first book. Zoe has been traveling with Mal, Stony and Blaine doing their Paranormal Investigation show. Once Zoe returns home she returns her focus on finding the man who killed Teri. Teri is a ghost that lives with Zoe and she's an absolute hoot!! She's my favorite out of all the characters! As Zoe continues her investigation some strange things start happening. I really enjoyed the storyline and getting to know more about Teri before she died. The killer was an absolute monster and I couldn't stop reading and waiting for him to get his!

The relationship with Zoe and Mal is progressing but it's taking way too long for my liking. I understand they want to take it slow but I was hoping for more in this book. It's hard to feel the connection between the two of them. I feel more between her and Teri than her and Mal. I'm hoping in the next book we get more of a connection between the two.

This book also introduces some secondary characters. Yup, we have Witches!! I liked the addition of these characters and the new developments we found out about Joelle (Zoe's best friend) and Zoe. I didn't see that coming and that was a very nice surprise. We also found out some family secrets and who doesn't like those?

Overall, I did like this story and will definitely be continuing with this series. Some series lose steam after the first book but Wood has kept the stories fresh and entertaining. When I'm reading these books it's like catching up with old friends. I can't wait to see what's in store for the bunch!

The anticipation has arrived!...I read it as soon as i bought it!..second book from the Wraith Files series and i am hooked. The story continued after a few months Zoe and her new friends slash crew traveled to go hunting for paranormal investigations. From the first book Zoe agree to help Teri, her best friend slash housemate slash a ghost to solve her murder 30 years ago. By then, when shes back loads of things happen and the mystery indeed getting deeper and deeper.

I liked how Zoe really taking her time even though i really want to knock her head sometime about her relationship with Mal. I can be team Teri and Jonelle who really encourages her to be with him but then again with her situation i do understand how it feels *sigh*..there will be a lot more to catch up with these two. The wit, pervy, swearing and loads more is here!. Will Zoe be able to help Teri to solved her murder? What more surprises will there be? Then you need to read it!

I cant wait for the next Wraith series and looking for it even more.Highly recommended people!!

We meet a few new characters, learn more about Zoe’s abilities, solve a mystery, and the romance heats up

Another great book in the series. The romance really heats up in this book. We find out more about Zoe’s abilities. She was not what I thought she was. We learn more about the ‘big bad’ and the Teri’s murderer. This book glosses over their travels while filming the Wraith Files, and focuses on Zoe’s home town again. I would have liked to read more about the ‘Wraith Files’ and other cases, although it was good coming back to the town and meeting Carissa and Angie. I hope this series goes for quite a few more books and we can read more about other cases, her abilities and others, her relationship with Mal, more about her town and the rest of the cast of characters in this series.

The second installment in the Wraith Files continues with Zoe looking for her resident Ghost Teri's killer. There's also a malevolent evil stalking Zoe and her friends. This book has a little bit of everything from quirky characters, suspense, thrills, chills, sexual tension, great friendships, and mystery. Will Zoe finally allow Malachi to be more than her boss, will she find Teri's killer, and will her friends survive the unexpected revelations that come to light? If you love a fun book that also has lots of thrills and mystery in it then this book is for you but you need to read Don't Wake The Dead first. Hurry Up CC Wood I want the next installment. The sexual tension is driving me nuts and I'm looking forward to the next adventure with this great group of characters

Good

Zoe’s been on the road with the Wraith Files team, but now she’s back home, she wants to investigate the death of her resident ghost.
Teri’s death is its own horror story, but it’s not long before Zoe and Mal are dealing with something quite malevolent, and it’s got Zoe in its sight!

Zoe learns a bit more about her abilities, and some more about Teri in this book. Her romance with Mal progresses a bit (slow burn), and we meet some new and interesting characters.
It’s an enjoyable, and creepy paranormal mystery, for those that like their mysteries a little magical and on the spooky side.

Love this series

The characters and their interactions keep me reading, along with the story line. Great premise fir an escape to the “other worldly” while keeping me interested in the human relationships. I still want Teri to be my ghost! What a hoot!

I liked the first book more

The second book in the series, although not a bad read, dragged a little.
I did not get the same sense of comadery between the team members either.
Will be interesting to see what happens next
