Running for his life wasn’t exactly what Portland PI Jake Brand had in mind when he accepted his latest client—but that’s exactly what he and Sarah, his best friend and assistant, find themselves doing in this heart-pounding sequel to Angel’s Devil.

Deception fueled by money begins when a beautiful woman throws down serious cash for Jake to find her missing boyfriend. Viole

My original Secondhand Smoke audiobook review and many others can be found at Audiobook Reviewer.

Jake Brand, PI finds himself in yet another mess.  His new client is attractive and aggressive – she wants her boyfriend found but she keeps hitting on Jake.  Mix in a hacker who does things unconventionally, a gorgeous Agent, a dirty cop and some hoodlums and you have a deadly combination for Jake and his colleagues/friends.

Mixed with lots of action and danger, Jake falls for a beautiful woman who …

The Jake Brand PI series is really shaping up to be one of my new favorites to follow. He reminds me of Crais's Elvis Cole as well as quite a few of Carl Hiaasen's male protagonists with a dash of Parker's Jesse Stone and Spenser. Those are all authors / characters I've grown to love over the years and I am happy to add M. Louis’s Jake Brand to the list.

In this book we get to know a lot more about Jake and his work as a Private Investigator as well as his gang of friends and contacts. We learn

This audiobook was given to me by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

First and foremost, I haven’t read “Angel’s Devil”, the first book of this series, so I was worried I might have a hard time understanding the plot since this was a sequel. Thankfully, the book was written in a way that it could stand alone. My first reaction while listening to the first few chapters was “This Jake guy has a really unique sense of humor”, lol. I like how the tone wasn’t too serious like most mystery

A significant portion of this story is devoted to character and relationship development. Jake seems to have pulled himself together and is a much more likable character now. His angel and devil aren't overdone as I had feared might happen. Jake's cynical humor adds much to the entertainment value of this story. The plot isn't as intricate or complex as in many novels of this genre, but that simply makes it seem less contrived and more realistic. It's still a very engaging story.

Great page turner! Being a Portland resident, I especially like all the references to local places. Jake Brand, the main character, is someone I would never want to get in a battle of wits with...he's really funny and self-deprecating. He's a hero I can get behind, as I'm not a huge fan of the stereotypical detective protagonist.

The action in this book is very well-paced and there were some real at-the-edge-of-your-seat moments when I was pretty sure Jake and his crew were not going to make it.

I received this as a goodreads winner. I gave this book a 3.5 rating. It started out at the beginning as a fast paced thriller. I had trouble in the middle but it picked up a little at the end. There is nothing wrong about the book and I would read more books from the author. I have just read better mysteries which kept my interest more.

*I received this book in a Goodreads giveaway*

This was an enjoyable mystery with quite a bit of humor. It was well-paced and the characters were well-drawn. I loved the relationship between Jake and his assistant. I felt like this book was unique in that we didn't dive straight into the central mystery but spent some time in his more typical work as a PI. I really enjoyed that.

Not having read or heard Angel's Devil, I don't feel as if I've missed anything by jumping straight into the second novel. Jake is a pretty straight-forward character. He's a private investigator struggling to make ends meet from job to job. He has an assistant that pretty much runs the office, and him, with efficiency. Through an unfortunate set of circumstances, Sarah winds up living with Jake - as friends only, no romance there peeps. Jake picks up a suspicious client which eventually has Jak ...more

A thriller full of twists and turns

4.75 out of 5 stars

Secondhand Smoke tells the story of a private investigator Jake Brand and a new case that he is introduced to. It feels like it’s going to be a quick open-shut case, but after he does some digging it ends up being way more than he expected. He opened pandora’s box, so to say. And now numerous different groups are trying to tie him to different things and figure out why he’s hanging around in all the wrong places.

At the beginning of Secondhand
