Here is a concise history, in just over 100pages, of the Pony Express of Western United States fame. The author wrote this story when some of the original riders, like "Pony Bob Haslam" were still alive. Research was wide ranging and included some Senate documents. Two areas are of particular interest: The first is Bradley's perspective on the value of the Pony Express to ...more

This fascinating look at the Pony Express lays out the history and reasons why this was a needed service and much welcomed. The overland route from East to West coast of America carried news, bank affairs, money, letters and newspapers among other matters. The other route was generally down through the Panama isthmus using a boat on each side and overland trail. Of course, this was cut off by the Civil War, so the time was right for a rider mail route through Utah and over mountains.

Google book scan. Of all those that I have read, this had the fewest scanning errors. Formatting errors still a pain to work through, with footnotes in the wrong place etc.

However, this was an entertaining and short read, filled with interesting facts about the (surprisingly short) history of the Pony Express. For an institution that is so pervasive in literature and folklore, it operated for a VERY short amount of time before being replaced by the telegraph and transcontinental railroad.

Fun Read

Written about 100 years ago, this history of the Pony Express is a fun and interesting read. Starting with the foundation of the Pony Express in the controversy around slavery and the Missouri Compromise and the role the Express played in keeping California in the Union as a free state. Stories of the Express and the riders are a fun read. A good book.

I wanted to like this as I've always been fascinated by the Pony Express. Most of it was quite good but I'm shocked to realize that it was published in 2003. It's fairly racist in places (for example referring to Native Americans as savages). It also glorifies the taking of land for the civilized peoples (i.e. white settlers). Disappointing. Look elsewhere for your history.

Updated: I've just realized this was written by a historian who died in 1930, so unfortunately his language and attitude are

Loved the history of something I've heard about, but really knew nothing about. Pony Express lasted only about 16 months before being replaced by the telegraph. Who would have guessed with all the movies that include somewhere in the story line.

Recommends it for: History buffs
A good story about the Pony Express. I was surprised that the author also covered political and national issues of the time that the mail system, both by land and sea, affected.
