The Jamie Hawkins Saga #1
Captain Hawkins
Jamie Hawkins was living on an obscure planet in the twenty third-century when on one fateful night--his life changed forever. His heroic effort to save the lives of innocent women and children, caught in the cross-fire of war, placed him squarely in the cross-hairs of avenging soldiers.
Hawkins was stunned when his rescue effort was seen as treachery. Unfairly convicted of treason by a corrupt judge, he was sentenced to life imprisonment at hard labor on an infamous penal colony.
Once in prison, his courage and perseverance won him the admiration and trust of his fellow convicts. While he was plotting his escape, an enemy attacked the planet--giving this daring warrior his chance. Together with his fellow prisoners, he launched a bold assault and high-jacked an enemy warship.
From then on, Captain Jamie Hawkins and his ship the Indefatigable fought against a corrupt government--only to discover a mysterious alien presence was behind the war.

H. Peter Alesso
82 books478 followersI love words, but that wasn't always true. I grew up with a talent for numbers, leading me to follow a different path. I went to Annapolis and MIT and became a nuclear physicist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Only after I retired was my desire to tell stories reawakened.
In recent years, I have immersed myself in the world of words, drawing on my scientific knowledge and personal experience to shape my writing.
As a scientist, I explored physics and technology, which enabled me to create informative and insightful books, sharing my knowledge with readers who sought to expand their understanding in these areas—contributing to their intellectual growth while satisfying my own passion.
But it was my time as a naval officer that ignited my imagination and propelled me into science fiction. After graduating from the United States Naval Academy and serving on nuclear submarines during both hot and cold wars, I witnessed firsthand the complexities and challenges of military operations that seamen face daily.
This allowed me a unique perspective, which I channeled into creating Henry Gallant and a 22nd-century world where a space officer fought against invading aliens. Through this narrative, I explored the depths of human resilience, the mysteries of space, and the intricacies of military conflict.
My stories let me share the highlights of my journey with you. I hope you enjoy the ride. (www.hpeteralesso.com)

At the beginning, I expected good things from this book and ended up disappointed. The Main Character, in fact, the only real character in the book isn't developed to a great extent and is a Wunderkin. There is really pretty much nothing he can't do, and even when he is set back he always comes out of every situation better off than when he went into it. It reads more like a tedious list of a braggart than a space action-adventure, I was saddened by the book more than excited by it.

This book takes place during the 23rd century. This book takes you on such an exciting, interesting, and intriguing journey filled with action, government corruption, dictatorship, heroism, oh and an alien presence. Yes, there is a lot going on in this book.
Captain Jamie Hawkins is an ex-Marine who is trying to keep mostly to himself since his discharge. However, when his neighbor, a young boy, asks for his help he can’t help but agree to. So Captain Hawkins heads to the hospital to help rescue the woman and children. Unfortunately, the local military raids the hospital and Captain Hawkins is accidentally labeled a rebel and is taken into custody. Thinking this is just a misunderstanding and can be easily explained that he was only trying to help and that he was not a rebel, he is astonished and bewildered when they don’t believe him. His rescue efforts are classified as treachery. Furthermore, he is convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment of hard labor at Zero Penal Colony.
While in prison, Captain Hawkins teams up with some other inmates and plots an escape. When an enemy attacks the planet, Hawkins sees this as the perfect opportunity to try and escape. Captain Hawkins and his new comrades come together to fight and battle against their corrupt government. They are pulled further into the devastating destruction and struggles of the war. They know this battle won’t be easy, but Captain Hawkins believes in doing the right thing, bringing justice, saving lives, and he’s willing to do whatever it takes to set things right again.
This book is book one in The Jamie Hawkins Sage book series. This book sets the backdrop of the fight and introduces the main characters.
This book is mostly about the war between two planets. Each planet has their own government, their own laws, and their own way of life. This book is about the fight between the Jaxions and Hellions.
There is also a bit of a love story. It is definitely more of a secondary, background narrative. I am curious to see if Mr. Alesso will explore this front and make this romance a higher priority in the next book of this series.
I liked the main characters, but felt they were a bit under developed. They had good characteristics, but just needed that extra to really allow the readers to connect and identify with them.
I have to admit I may be a bit bias, because I am a main character in this book – Alyssa! Lol! Okay, it’s honestly not me, but I am stoked that my name is featured and even spelled correctly – that rarely happens!
Mr. Alesso did a fantastic job on world-building. He made this story the perfect amount of sci-fi and space opera without being over technical. This allows for readers to easily follow and understand the story without getting lost in translation. This is great for readers that are new to sci-fi books or readers that enjoy sci-fi books but are reserved about reading books that are too complicated.
There are some twists and turns you probably won’t see coming. This book was very entertaining and filled with non-stop action. I would definitely recommend this book and I am curious to see how the rest of this book series unfolds.

Captain Hawkins by H. Peter Alesso is the first book in ‘The Jamie Hawkins Saga’, a science fiction story that follows a medically discharged Space Marine who is thrust into rebellion against his corrupt government. A series of circumstances that drag him further into the struggle between those from the Earth colonies and the dictatorship under those from Hellion force him into a pivotal position against both factions. His skills and personality garner him allies who aid him in his battles, but it is his determination that will be the most important factor in his struggle.
There are great elements of space opera in this story. Struggles over planets and colonies in space, possible alien contact, humans who are willing to sacrifice anything and throw themselves into the fray, scientific advances, and weapons capable of mass destruction. I was drawn into the story immediately, and sympathetic to the main character and his young associate. This is one of those stories where the villains are so evil that you want to boo and hiss every time they have their time in the spotlight.
I was a bit frustrated because Hawkins seems virtually indestructible, in the fashion of a superhero, and the characters are not well-developed, but I enjoyed much of the action as it unfolded. I do take exception with the purported romance, particularly given the tragic event that immediately precedes the long-awaited kiss, not to mention the mysteriously fortuitous intervention that tilts the struggle favorably at the end. I really hope that I was given an advance reader copy for review, as there were editing issues that were pretty distracting, especially the random commas that altered the flow of the story. Those who are bothered by shifting points of view might also be a bit disturbed by sections of the story. I think this author has a great facility for imagining other worlds and space battles and this is a fun and exciting story, it just needs to be polished a bit more. Hopefully, subsequent stories in the series will give more insight into the key characters as well as tie up some of the dangling threads.

Captain Jamie Hawkins is a jaded ex-marine who is living life by keeping his head down and staying out of things. That is until a neighbour starts to bang on his door asking for help. A war is raging and innocent people are being hurt and even though Jamie wants to do nothing more than help a friend he can’t turn a blind eye when he knows something is wrong. After saving a group of people in a hospital he is falsely sent to prison. What a corrupt government doesn’t realise is that Jamie Hawkins will not obey easily and is not will not be broken.
If he can escape will he go back to looking out for himself or is there a greater calling for Jamie Hawkins?
This is a fast-paced plot with some interesting situations and characters. As it is a start to a series the main character Jamie Hawkins is well developed and has you rooting for him to the end. There are some fantastic fight scenes that are well written which allows you to see them in your mind. The futuristic setting but with believable settings makes it easy to relate to the characters and situations.
My only quibble is that the relationship between Jamie and Alyssa feels a tad rushed at the end and there are a few moments where I needed to reread to follow the action.
This is a fast-paced futuristic plot that never stops. I enjoyed it and would happily recommend it

Unpolished, yet fun
Didn't know what to make of this story to begin with. The writing is not quite what I'm used to, rapidly jumping from scene to scene with little transition, and some of the dialogue comes across somewhat laboured. However - the action, though sometimes too swift, is good. The space warfare is believable. The characters are distinct. And the world building is decent. Glad I persevered, though I do believe it should have been stretched out into a longer, more fleshed-out novel to give the characters and the war more room to breathe. Perhaps an idea for the author for the future?

This is the first book I have read of H. Peter Alesso and I loved it.
The story starts slow and builds up tempo.
I like the characters and some I did not like. The battle scenes are very nicely described and I felt like I was in them.
I did not want the book to end. I am now on the hunt for Captain Hawkins second book titled Captain Hawkins: The Greater Lie.
I hope you read it and enjoy it.

Well done
The story is of a swashbuckling hero who fights many battles that seem hopeless. Skill and daring with a touch of bravery help Jamie get to the final battle...not exactly good and evil but more of courage and hubris. Wealthy politicians are bought and continue to line their pockets even in the midst of war. A good read.

Cliches and cardboard characters
Yawn. Really disappointed with this book. Over the top characters like bad cartoon villains and shallow dialogue that is just extremely boring. Storyline was disjointed and felt really really unpolished and clunky. Over hyped reviews and just not worth reading. Was only able to get through 30 percent before giving up.

From a guy who had to be convinced that he should be involved in the situation in his home town, the ex marine, was entangled in a world of corruption and greed. His sense of honor and righteousness saw him through.
He was a natural leader of men, showing by example and guiding with good humor and comradeship.
Yeah, against all comers, he stood his ground and won out.

Fast paced action
I really enjoyed this book. The characters were very well written. The plotting was the best I have read in a long time. Swooping through saving both the girl of his dreams and the Galaxy .

In my opinion, while the premise and characters in the book are somewhat interesting, the type of ships and artillery configurations and tactics are straight out of the 18th century. It might as well be sailing ships rather than spaceships and battles tactics.

“Captain Hawkins” the first novel in H.Peter Alesso’s imaginative and thrilling new series “The Jamie Hawkin’s Saga” opens with an uprising in the capital city of Jaxon and Jamie Hawkin’s heroic action to save the lives of the innocent in a nearby hospital only to be convicted of treason and sent to the Xeno Penal Colony. Determined to escape the brutality of the paranoid, sadistic warden and his lackeys Jamie joins forces with revolutionary Arron Hale, young Joshua Morgan and other prisoners, plotting a breakout that will have them capturing an enemy warship and heading to a rebel base in the asteroid belt.
Having felt the brunt of a despicably corrupt government Jamie Hawkins joins the rebellion capturing the warship Indefatigable and challenging not only the Jaxon Fleet and the government’s Special Forces unit, but the Hellion Fleet poised to grab colonies in the asteroid belt.
Set in the disintegrating democracy of Jaxon governed by a power-hungry, corrupt President, rebellion has erupted in a time of war with the dictatorship of Hellion. Tension mounts as the story heats up when Jamie Hawkins, falsely accused of treason joins the insurgents, escaping prison and mounting attacks not only on Hellion forces but those of Jaxon. A master at building realism and intensity into every battle scene H. Peter Alesso escalates the action as Jamie and his crew are swept up in one confrontation after another, narrowly escaping and adding captured enemy ships to their small fleet. Yet amid all the conflict a mystery is born when curious radio signals are received from space and the possibility of an alien presence ratchets up the suspense.
Although at times I found the dialogue didn’t flow naturally and the romance between Jamie and Alyssa Parker too unrealistic, the author does an exceptional job of diluting the violence with dashes of humor as well as building emotional intensity after Jamie’s deadly clashes with the enemy.
Like all his novels the author creates characters in this plot that are not only complex with all the weaknesses and strengths, but unforgettable bringing power and passion to the plot. Twenty-six year Jamie Hawkins who’s hard-boiled and cynical from past adversity is honorable, resourceful yet impulsive. With acute intelligence and a need to save lives, he constantly follows his instincts which lead he and his crew into precarious situations. In contrast his friend Arron Hale is calm, disciplined and loyal but is prone to thinking things through before taking decisive action. Both men are attracted to Alyssa Parker a principled and caring doctor. Yet it’s the paranoid, psychotic warden Jacob Steward; the ambitious, self-interested Anthony Rodriguez and the cold, calculating, power-hungry President Charles Victor that add a chill to this story.
“Captain Hawkins” is a fast-paced sci-fi thriller that will keep you captivated from the first page to the end. I liked it and can’t wait to see where the rebellion will take Jamie Hawkins next.

I enjoyed this book. It was a space adventure but wasn’t completely over the top. Hawkins was a normal person and wasn’t completely infallible.

I absolutely loved this book! Action packed and full of twists and turns, I was sitting on the edge of my seat and gripping my tablet with white knuckles most of the time! After ex military Jamie Hawkins takes action and helps protect wounded patients, women and children in a hospital during a rebel uprising, charges are brought upon him, claiming he aided rebels. Refusing to acknowledge the true facts, his trial is a farce and he ends up sentenced to life on a penal colony planet. He bands together with other prisoners and they escape during an enemy attack on their planet, and he quickly rises to become a Captain and one of the top rebel leaders in deep space. Crushed between two corrupt government factions, they're kept on their toes evading pursuit by them and a nefarious colonel from Jamie's past. There was never a dull moment during this book and it was one wild ride the entire book! I really loved how the author sometimes threw in sound effects- that made it truly unique! I really loved this space adventure and can't wait to see what the next book in the series may bring!

This is bad
Random speechifying. The hospital has shields, but they lose power and he starts a generator to get them up, but apparently the shields don't keep people out, but he has to take them down before the soldiers arrest him...bombers and artillery rain down while he rides a "motorcycle-like" flyer without getting shot at...long info dumps, but none of it information that explains what is going on...

Interesting
My only comment is that the battle sections were very long and not as dramatic in their affect. Other that that good book and worth the read.
