Before rock-and-roll there was Sideshow, which captivated, mystified and enraged audiences for over a hundred years. But heading towards the end of the 20th Century, you could count the remaining Sideshows on one hand. Entertainment had become sanitized and corporatized for mass consumption; lukewarm safe with no sharp edges. That is, until a modern Sideshow came to town i ...more

This book is so odd and mesmerizing! If you were ever curious about the inner workings of a circus sideshow and the people that performed in them this book is for you.
Told by a series of diary entries the story gives the reader a first hand account of the trials and tribulations of being a performer in a sideshow. There are so many emotions in this book! The lives of the performers and the supporting cast are vividly drawn and intimately rendered.
There are also drawings and illustrations that

Circus of the Scars by Jan T. Gregor et. al. is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in late March.

Originally written and illustrated in 1998, this book is....let me try to put this a different way. Imagine that you're seated at a blackjack table, alone with the dealer, peaceably and professionally shuffling and cutting the deck. Then they start to deal; two for them, two for you, then eight more for you. Two for an invisible person on your far right side. Two for the dealer tending to a game besi

Recommends it for: any fan of sideshow
Definately a different perspective on Jim Rose's personality. This book gives a lot more info on the other founders of the Jim Rose Circus Sideshow where as Freak like me focuses only on Jim Rose.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Life inside a circus sideshow in all its brutality and glory! Touring the globe, the Jim Rose Circus Sideshow was a whirlwind of human emotions with the lives of the performers brought to life through diary entries, drawings, and also the author's voice. Fascinating.

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for a honest review. I really enjoyed this book eventhough I had no idea what it would be like. It really does give you a inside perspective on what a Circus Sideshow is and what it entails. At the start of the story, everyone seems to get on but as the countless shows add up year after year the cracks start to show. People's characters show their true colours. In the end I didn't like Jim Rose and how he was with the rest of the troupe. I thought ...more
