Avengarde is Taveol's last refuge; a city of ice and blood, perched on the frozen edge of the known world, where he believes he is safe from the ghosts of his mercenary past. But when Taveol harbors a wounded Fae woman in the face of racial cleansing, the two outcasts are caught up in a decades-spanning conflict that threatens to tear the city and their lives apart, piece ...more

As this is the third time I’ve read this wonderful book I thought I should probably explain why. Avengarde is such an encompassing world to fall into. As one epic struggle it could have felt drawn out but every sentence pulled me along, even already knowing what comes next. You immediately feel personally connected to every character and the transparent (and many times humorous) ways the varied people of Avengarde express themselves. The imagery and language has me constantly pausing to just enj ...more

I am going to be really honest here, if I could give stars for certain criteria, this book may not end up with the five stars I gave it, reasoning being that this book frankly has a large handful of noticeable technical errors in the writing and that my copy was bound in such a way that it was susceptible to pages falling out. However, I am not here to complain about spelling and grammar and all of this, for this is not really what I look for in a book.

WOW - dark, intense and thought provoking with a little sarcasm thrown in for good measure. This book takes heavy issues and views them through the fantasy lens with great results.
I thoroughly enjoyed the descriptive scenes and character development. I could literally picture Taveol and Aerwyn in my mind while the story played out. I laughed out loud several times and my blood pressure grew steadily during the final scenes.

I'm not a fantasy reader typically, but once I picked up this book, I couldn't put it down. I loved the strong and relatable characters and the immersive atmosphere of the divided city. It's also refreshing to see such powerful and admirable female characters in Aerwyn and Imre. This book is so relevant to the challenges our society is facing today, and I think it can teach us all something valuable about overcoming differences and finding respect for each other.

A Pennsylvania transplant, Zachary Barnes is a fantasy author who has been self-publishing since 2007. Barnes, an avid reader and artist all his life, first ventured into the world of storytelling by competitively co-writing short stories with his equally-bored sister, Rachael. Only in 2005 did Barnes’ interest in writing become serious when the substantive worlds of Robert Jordan and George R. R. ...more
