This book was absolutely terrible (particularly the writing). I bought it from a national park visitor center to have ghost stories to read around the campfire and found it so terrible even in the absence of the internet that I couldn’t bring myself to read it. I finally finished it so as to get rid of it (to a Little Free Library—sorry) because I hate not finishing books.

Painfully outdated. There are very few specific names and locations in this book, giving the whole thing a “my classmate’s cousin’s friend’s uncle saw x” or generic ghost story vibe. The best sentence is: “Wise picked up his shovel and hurried home, never mentioning his ordeal to anyone,” on page 46. How do the authors of this book know what happened if he never told anyone? Whose story did I just read?
TL, DR: citation needed.

As a new resident of Frederick, MD I found this book entertaining and informative. I loaded my Google map with locations to seek out. The Snallygaster and Dwayoo were featured on an episode of the Lore podcast.

Terrible, badly written book, full of repetitive stories. Definitely not a recommendation.

Good, short review of local ghost stories in the area. Quick read and fun if you live in the area.

It reads more a collection of information than a ghost story. I wish there was more suspense built in but it just fell flat since most stories only had 3-4 pages each.
