Great story of survival after a pandemic caused by someone altering the smallpox virus and releasing it onto the world.

Harper Lee Mackenzie is celebrating what she thinks may be her birthday. The deadly virus made clocks and calendars obsolete. She lives on a boat called The Painted Lady, and for the past year she has been the last person on the face of the earth.

Every few days she goes to the shops to pick up food and supplies, avoiding the pack of wild dogs led by a husky with a mangled face

For the first time in a very long while, I read 'The Last Girl Guide' in one sitting. It was just so good, I couldn't put it down.

The story is told in form of Harper's diary entries. Harper is a 15 year old girl who is extremely lucky to be alive. One of the biggest threats is the packs of wild, rabid dogs that hunt in packs. I've been having a serious dry spell with finding good books lately, so this book was like a breath of fresh air. It's dystopian-lite and easily read in one sitting.

I liked Harper and following her on her journey was interesting. She felt real, if that makes sense, not like the Mary Sue heroines that seem so prevalent in most books lately.

I thought that the beginning of this novella was much stronger than the middle and ending. I felt like a bit too much time was spent describing the mechanics o

Simple story of survival

I liked the realism of the scenario portrayed in this book. It's a little different to your standard "science killed us all"/"zombies" approaches. The ending felt like the author had decided to end the book, so found a conclusion, rather than the story coming to a natural conclusion. Anyone who likes young adult fiction without forced romance, and post-apocalyptic stories might enjoy this.
