Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam (Tamil: அவுல் பகீர் ஜைனுலாப்தீன் அப்துல் கலாம்) usually referred to as A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, was one of India's most distinguished scientists. He was an Aerospace engineer, professor, and chancellor of the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), who served as the 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007. During his term as President, he was popularly known as the People's President.

Before his term as India's president, he worked as an aeronautical engineer with DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation) and ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation). He was responsible for the development of India's first satellite launch vehicle,the SLV-3 He is popularly known as the Missile Man of India for his work on development of ballistic missile and space rocket technology. Kalam played a pivotal organisational, technical and political role in India's Pokhran-II nuclear test in 1998, the first since the original nuclear test by India in 1974.

He has the unique honour of receiving honorary doctorates from thirty universities and the country's three highest civilian honours - Padma Bhushan (1981), Padma Vibhushan (1990) and Bharat Ratna (1997).

Former President Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, who became popular as ‘People’s President’, passed away on July 27th, 2015 at the age of 83 in Shillong, India.

Should I review the book? There are certain classics that I have opined of attaining a position such that they don't need a review. They are self-fulfilled. Dr.A.P.J. Kalam is a personality that has influenced billions of Indians and foreigners alike. He possess a thought process that is futuristic, and pragmatic.


'Learning How to Fly- Life lessons for the youth' is a compilation of talks delivered by the great man himself at various occasions. He asks the youth to be creative and innovative. His knowledge equation -Knowledge=Creativity +Righteousness +Courage- is a cosmopolitan observation. I find it puerile reviewing the Pointe he put forth and citing the merits and demrits (which doesn't exist)
Author tells how to attain excellence.

He has always believed that reading is the key to success. In this book as well, he has reinforced the importance of books and has recommended a few. His experiences in ISRO is something that provide an adrenaline pump to the youth, not for defence or attack, but to attain excellence.


If the book doesn't influence a person, then there must be nothing that can change him. That is the level of novelty in the ideas shared. Dr. Kalam has shared his experiences to bolster the cognitive thoughts put forth by him.

I've always been inspired by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, I have always followed him and considered him as an idol and this book really has a lot for me to learn from. It contains some really great stories about personalities that I idolise and lessons given in the book for the youth is really helpful. The book tells about the the role of teachers in the life of students, the importance of books and the importance of aiming big and doing something for the nation, society and the world. The reason I'm giving this book a four star is because the same point is repeated again and again in the book, 'creativity is important for the development of youth' which I definitely agree with but I don't get the idea of repeating it everytime. Apart from that, it's a really great book, very well put together, a must read for the youth (ofc).

This book is a collection of discourses that Dr.Kalam has given across the world. It is a more relevant documentation for those seek excellence and inspiration. Dr. Kalam truly appreciates and acknowledges the work of many who in his perspective were responsible for making him the man he was.

A must read for every youth chasing excellence to learn to pursue it with integrity and curiosity.

“You have to dream before your dreams can come true”

This book is a collection of the most famous speeches given by A.P.J Abdul Kalam. Dr Abdul Kalam was an aerospace engineer and the 11th President of India. As his speeches were influential, some of them were collected and published in this book. Most of the speeches in this book were about the youth and how young minds can change the world. He gave examples of some of the most famous people who ever lived.

Not all of these speeches were about the youth. Some of them were also about science and how science can affect the entire world. He explains how scientists like Alexander Graham Bell, Subrahmanyan Chandrashekhar, and mathematicians like Ramanujan have changed the understanding of the world. He also shares his personal experiences, and how they affected him.

Most of these lectures are influential and important. I can’t say that all were good. Some were pretty boring and didn’t have much meaning. But all these speeches are worth reading.

This one is different because the endearing tone of his spoken words.

Well, I read a second book by APJ Kalam, first one was Wings of Fire. I loved this book because it has mentioned about his interactions with students all over the world. He talked about innovation, education, technology, books, nuclear power and what not. He talked about his falures more than success and how he always faced his fears with courage and spirit. He never gave up on his dreams as for him giving him on dreams meant living a life like a dead soul. I found immense strength in his character of always learning from whatever little or big books he got his hands on, considerding if you read you can win this world. I would recommend it to those who are losing their mind over something which doesn't need their attention in the first place.

It is a must read book for all the students and young generation. I would say it is the most under rated books of Indian Literature. The book is as simple as the man himself, however it contains greatest of the teachings and ideas you can ever come across. He belongs to the world. His teaching and ideas belong to the world. We are fortunate enough to call him an Indian.

His immense understanding of technology as well as spirituality along with the human behaviour is a gift to our generation and mankind at large. His writings are antidote against the bad vibes around the world. I have decided to read him fortnightly to cleanse the mind and soul. My below average stature of writing this review is merely an attempt to show the power of his teachings. My words can never tell you enough how important his words are. So please do yourself a favour and read as many of his books as possible. He has literally left us the treasure of wisdom to make our lives much much better in this ever changing and ever demanding world.

There are very few personalities who leaves behind such an impression of themselves that you can only think about positivity and motivation whenever you hear/think/feel about them. A.P.J Abdul Kalam is one such personality for whom not only I but the whole nation and world have immense respect. His contribution to this country and society has been priceless and we shall be indebted towards him always. I have always liked reading books written by Mr. Kalam which made me pick the latest release named “Learning How To Fly”. The book is said to be “Life lessons for the youth”. Rupa Publication has done a great job in compiling few of his last speeches and lectures and publishing it in the form of this book.

All the speeches and lectures sound so perfect that many a times I couldn’t believe if Mr. Kalam actually spoke them spontaneously or perfected it by preparing drafts after drafts as a writer does while writing a book. Each and every speech has a message behind it and therefore it leaves you with lot more knowledge than you had before reading it. Also every chapter shows the vision this Legend had for India and its youth. None of his speech was just a talk show. He has provided insight through each and every speech of his. He literally had bullet points actually for each and every field or area in which India needs improvement with a proper scientific planning how the same can be achieved.

All the paragraphs where Kalam had discussed how he worked in the field of aeronautics are an excellent read and you want to know more about how this man worked on several proud achievements of this country. The way he speaks in respect about his seniors and keeps on telling us again and again to be leaders and creative gives a lot of inspiration. Abdul Kalam’s vision for India to make it an accomplished nation by 2020 is repeated in many speeches which tell about his commitment towards his country.

Overall, I would say that it is one of the best books which need to be read in the genre of compilations. Anything that can bring me closer to A.P.J Abdul Kalam is a dream and the most cherished gem for me. And so is this book. I recommend this book to everyone. My rating is 4.5* out of 5. I just wished this book was double in size than it is as I wanted to read more speeches/lectures given by one of the most respected and valuable person this country has produced.

When one comes across a classic book like this one, no amount of positive review will do justice to the the words of wisdom described in this book. I'd hate to start the review of the book by quoting the book but a gem like this one cannot be introduced by any other way.

"Coming into contact with a good book and possessing it, is indeed an everlasting enrichment."

Personally, reading this book is an everlasting enrichment. This book is the collection of discourses that Dr. Kalam delivered to the youth all over the world. While the target audience for this book is youth, who needs to chase excellence and make a meaningful impact in this world, in my opinion everyone can gain wisdom from this book and inculcate the values in their own families.

In a polarized and sundered world, where people are consistently fighting over race, religion and social inequality, they fail to realize that education will uplift them from inequality not desecrating any statues. If one needs to live in a clean, disease free, equitable society, the political doctrine needs to put emphasis on the primary education rather than religious based education. Being educated does not mean proselytizing from one's beliefs, it means being open to the world around them.

Dr. Kalam known as the missile man of India, was also a man of many professions. He was a scientist, a leader, the President of India, and a teacher. You will always remain in our hearts - Thank you for everything!

It's a simple collection of some of Dr. Kalam's best lectures addressed to the youth and teachers across the world. In these lectures he tried to enlighten minds of youth about their endless capacity to do things..
He delivered a deeply optimistic lesson about believing in oneself and developing confidence to become future leaders of life, above all these he expressed a deep gratitude to some great personalities who contributed in the development of his life. The book also carries discussions about reading habit, idea of home library, concept of knowledge, creativity, righteousness and courage etc.
Learning how to fly is telling every reader, in Dr. Kalam's words that each of us have the wings and we are capable of flying high.

I have completed reading the book *Learning how to fly* life lessons for the youth by *APJ Abdul Kalam*

*Lessons Learnt:*

1. I learnt that every youth wants to be unique. You can only be YOU! But the world all around you is doing its best, day and night, to make you just like everybody else.

2. *A promise to APJ ABDUL KALAM:*
a.) I will have a goal and work hard to achieve that goal. I realize that aiming small is a crime.
b.) I will work with integrity and succeed with integrity.
c.) I will be a good member of my family, a good member of the society, a good member of the nation and a good member of the world.
d.) I will always try to save or better someone’s life, without any discrimination of caste, creed, language, religion or community.
e.) I will always protect and enhance the dignity of every human life without any bias.
f.) I will always remember the importance of time. My motto will be ‘Let not my winged days, be spent in vain’.
g.) I will always work for clean planet Earth and clean energy.
h.) My national flag flies in my heart and I will bring glory to my nation.

3. *Excellence:* Excellence in thinking and action is the foundation for any mission.
What is excellence? Friends, you all belong to the youth community, which should be filled with a culture of excellence. Excellence does not come by accident. It is a process, where an individual or organization or nation continuously strives to better oneself. The performance standards are set by themselves, they work on their dreams with focus and are prepared to take calculated risks and do not be deterred by failures as they move towards their dreams. Then they step up their dreams, as they tend to reach the original targets. They strive to work to their potential, in the process, they increase their performance thereby multiplying further their potential, and this is an unending cycle. They are not in competition with anyone else, but themselves. That is the culture of excellence. I am sure each one of you will aspire to master this culture of excellence.

4. *successful scientists surely make a lot of wealth, but their motivation is always beyond money. They think in terms of what change they can bring about in other peoples’ life. Science is driven by compassion and empathy often to alleviate the pains of humanity.*

5. I would like to ask you, what would you like to be remembered for? You have to evolve yourself and shape your life. Write your dreams down on a piece of paper. That page may be a very important page in the book of human history. You will be remembered for creating that one page in the history of the nation—whether that page is the page of invention, the page of innovation, or the page of discovery, or the page of creating societal change, or a page of removing poverty or the page of finding new technologies for humankind.

6. *While talking about good deeds, I am reminded of the advice given to Mahatma Gandhi by his mother. She said, ‘Son, in your entire lifetime, if you can save or better someone’s life, your birth as a human being and your life is a success.’ This advice made a deep impact on Gandhiji’s mind and he worked for humanity throughout his life.*

7. when you remove “I” and “me” from the mind, you will eliminate ego; if you get rid of the ego, hatred towards fellow human beings will vanish; if the hatred goes out of the mind, the violence in thinking and action will disappear; if violence in our mind is taken away, peace springs in human minds.’

8. *One day, a course participant, Stephanie, who was a school teacher before joining the course, asked me an unusual question. She asked, ‘Dr Kalam, yesterday night I was reading one of your books. You have done many tasks, so tell us what one task gave you the most bliss?’ Let me share my answer with all of you.
When we launched the first indigenous satellite launch vehicle SLV-3 in 1980, it gave me lot of happiness. When AGNI reached the target at 2,000 km in 1989, it gave me different kind of happiness. When our team successfully tested a nuclear weapon at the 52 degree centigrade heat in Pokhran desert in western India in 1998, it gave me great joy. When our team prepared the Vision 2020 document for transforming the nation into an economically developed nation, it gave me a good sense of happiness. Then Stephanie reminded me, ‘But what gave you bliss?’ I told her, that I was getting to the real answer. The experience that gave me the greatest bliss was when I played a part in creating lightweight callipers to be worn by children afflicted by polio. The removal of the pain and the freedom attained by the children gave me a state of bliss, which I never experienced during any other achievement in my life.

The multi-tasking mind and the renowned scientist in the country of India produced Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam’s inspirational and motivational book “Learning How to Fly, Life Lesson for Youth” which fired my heart to write this review, particularly for youth on the planet. First and foremost Dr. APJ insists that the world citizens create, cultivate, and develop self-confidence to lead themselves in society, Self-confidence will lead an individual to construct self-discipline, and self-discipline will grow ethics and ethics will build moral values in your life. I could define that moral value as a master science of the social norms and values which is inevitable for an individual bound to walk with the talk! Self-esteem is an image of the eternal socio-psycho of each and every character of the role played on the world’s giant stage, perhaps with different hats for different roles in sociology.

The ability to earn knowledge is an invaluable asset for the young nation, then what can I do, Dr APJ suggests a very simple solution is only reading, reading, and reading, indeed if you fail to make use of your learning with your knowledge it will be a disaster, if you use only your knowledge without learning it leads to the failure, therefore, learning and knowledge are the two lanes of the life train to continue the journey without derail. Setup a small home library will be a glory of the knowledge in a family, gather at the coffee table or dining table for a meal with a good book narrate and review it will be a healthy discussion. The interoperable system is the best practice in day-to-day life that youngsters will carry out their responsibilities with a spirit of excellence, dedication, and self-drive.

The young talents should have a fighting spirit and fight for corruption and defeat corruption, not voice out for corruption is the biggest crime, and work tirelessly to build a transplant government and protect the nation and the environment from the obnoxious entities and safely handover it the next generation. I am very humiliated that the nation and the world hostage by terrorism, dominated by corruption, and democracy swallowed by power hunger whales, so, overcome this holocaust is the young generation’s smart leadership and vibrant thinking pattern should be entered into the platform immediately. The nation and society in the world have gone through several dark eras at different times in the history of the world, starvation and poverty are the two main enemies of social destruction. I commend the young nation I am ready to lead you all in the battle, the battle not for destruction, the battle for construction in the elements of a clean environment, food security, eradicating poverty, creating new entrepreneurship for restore unemployment, renewal energy, good drinking water, social security, best healthcare and education, decent life with shelter, and transparency in governances, my Goodluck for the young solders.

Integration of science and technology is the biggest challenge but it demands value for many progress in nation building end the environmental protection, economic progress, and nation harmony. The integration should be balanced by the exploration experts in the different fields which have been receiving great responses. Leadership is an essential tool with a new dimension of knowledge for success, in this context the brilliance of technology, infrastructure, and utilization will bridge between the poor and rich, urban and rural and it will be embarked to the next level by breaking the bureaucrat and inequity and aim to create a sustainable society.

Dr. Kalam urges youngsters to develop their creative minds, the worth of a creative mind for an individual to promote and invest his/her talent, capacity, and skills for the nation’s development. Also, the “creative mind discusses ideas, not people”. Creativity conceived from good thoughts is indeed an everlasting enrichment. Have good books as our guides and permanent companions. Do decide to read a book based on the fact that the book is useful. Transforming the future of human civilization has to aim for the future prosperity of civilized society with modern infrastructures by applying “the best technologies” which could recreate the culture and tradition of human civilization with multidisciplinary global sustainable development.

In my conclusion, I convey the message to the global citizens that intellect and empathy galvanize every individual for success, and success will bring freedom to every individual's mind and heart to express their own view with self-confidence with six virtues what Kalam says generosity, ethics, tolerance, perseverance, concentration, and intelligent.

This book is a compilation of various lectures given by Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam addressing to the teachers, students and parents. Aerospace engineer Dr. Kalam had served India as the 11th president of India.

His thirst for acquiring knowledge can be realised from his thoughtful analysis. He related the stories of great people and even the lessons from the nature that we have unnoticed with his advices. “ According to the laws of aerodynamics the bumblebee should never be able to fly. Because of the size, weight and shape of its body in relationship to the total wing span, the flight of the bumblebee is scientifically impossible. But the bumblebee, being ignorant of scientific theory, goes ahead and flies anyway because it wants to fly.”

He portrayed stories of having courage to pick ourselves up after a setback from this own life. “When you set upon difficult missions, it will bring difficult challenges which may sometimes produce temporary setbacks. The test of a human being is in accepting the failure and to keep trying until he or she succeeds. Managing failures is a quality which is the essence of leadership.”

He repeatedly emphasised “If you have an aim in life, continuously acquire the knowledge, work hard with confidence to win and have the confidence to defeat problems and succeed with a righteous heart, you will definitely succeed in all your missions. It does not matter who you are.”

Most importantly he didn’t forget to mention the fact that " human beings can become a Shaitan (devil) particularly if the intellect acts without empathy."

Just finished reading this amazing book which honestly mentally stimulate you to be confident in yourself and make you trust you the Importance of having an Aim and being Righteous in life I felt like I should have read this book much more prior .
I have always been a big Fan of A.P.J. Abdul Kalam sir , a man with zero haters ,like all his books this book too was astounding.
So the book HOW TO FLY is book written in very simple English language that anyone can read
the book starts by famous verse " I will fly " by Sufi poet Rumi . The book basically tells us that you should have an passionate or dream for which you are always thirsty and keep on trying until you reach the destination . In between he also makes us clear that, we should do something good and useful and productive that others will remember us in a good way . Like how we remember Thomas Alva Edison when we see electric bulb , when we see an airplane we remember the wright brothers who proved that ' man can fly' . The entire book is for basically for students and teachers but is also good to boost up your confidence .He also says that students or children will always be forced to be someone else but he reminds us we should be unique by ourselves .The book has 13 chapter which include Dr kalams experiences ,his advice to students ,managing life , making books as friend ,being creative and many beautiful quotes . Its really a good book that you can read when you are travelling or want to build up confidence, its good for young students as well as teachers .

Learning a lot, no comments needed to tell that this, yet another book of Kalam is a master piece. Every time you read his book, there is always a lot of information in it, a lot of learning in it. Not just about Kalam but also about his teachers, teachings, books and other motivational examples shared in the book.
This book is no different, I always admired the examples that are shared in his books, from his school teachers, to neighbors, to his educational professors, mentors, and not to forget the people he met around the world.
There are always certain things that we learn anew while reading his books, for example, “When the sun shines, green plants break down water to get electrons and protons, use these particles to turn carbon dioxide into glucose and went out the oxygen as a waste product. Each mature tree in a year absorbs 20 kg of carbon dioxide and transforms into wood and reinforces the branches of tree. At the same time, it lets out into the atmosphere 14 kg of oxygen”. We all learnt a part of this but a few know the complete detail. I just gave a single example from the book, I do not want to give more details as this is a book that needs to be read, may be more than once.
Always a must and worth read. Learn how to lead, how to be a leader, how to be a visionary and most importantly a certain facts about our country and our scientists which will make us proud. A big thanks to our beloved, late President, A B J Abdul Kalam.

Dr APJ Abdul Kalam🖖... His focus and great ambition was finding ways to transform India🇮🇳 into a developed nation.. you did many things in his life - he was a scientist👨‍🔬, a leader🧍‍♂️,the President of India, and teacher👨‍🏫. All these roles, the one that give him the greatest Joy 🤩 was that of a teacher... He spoke about the concept of *ignited mind*. .. she told the children that the biggest challenge is to fight the battle within... And never stop fighting until you arrive at destined place..💪..You can only be YOU!👊 But world all around you is doing its best ,day and night, to make you just like somebody else. At home🏡,you are asked by your parents to be like the neighbours children and score good marks💯 like them. When you go to school🏫, your teachers👩‍🏫👨‍🏫 say, why can't you be among the top five5️⃣ in the class? Wherever you go, they are saying,'you have to be somebody else or like everybody else.' In his lectures he spoke about power of knowledge, ambition, moral behavior and the need to bring change in society. The lectures the lectures also tell how to prepare one best for life, to identify and overcome challenges and how to bring the best within each individual. They tell us the importance of dream and the hard work needed to turn those dreams into reality.

The book has been written in simple English and also break dow into points for better understanding.

He has also asked every one of us to start a home library of just 20 books to begin with. Out of 20, 10 books must be of children so that they can cultivate reading habit in an early age. Dr. Kalam also said that a home library is the greatest wealth.

Excellent read. It manifest how one person when starts to believe in himself can do anything.

There was a lot of insights into the things that a person can do to help not just our species but the whole word, how a small good deed a day can give someone such heavenly bliss which we can't get from completing a regular office task. It talks about things that a person can imbibe to change this world into something that we think is impossible to make like heaven. The book can be ordinary for some people but if those people try to really see the beauty of the ideas and embrace them, then they will know how the theory that a butterfly flapping its wings and causing a typoon can come true in our humanly perspective.

As he always does, Dr Kalam shared his insights and experiences to instill positivity in the young generation. The greatest asset to his thoughts is their point of origin. He takes great lessons and rather important ones in most cases from the smallest of the incidents. It amazes me and gives a new direction to think and a new perspective. It propels the readers to believe that a good change and improvement are possible with very little but continuous and sincere efforts.

'Excellence happens not by accident. It is a process.' That is my key takeaway from this collection of his speeches.

It is a great book with great quotes by APJ Abdul Kalam. It is the best book for the youth. Not only the youth but anyone who reads the book. So encouraging words by him. It will inspire you a lot to set a goal and then achieve it. I will recommend it to the readers of every stage. Everyone can relate to this book because as we grow up, our strategies, goals missions etc. change and we need motivation in every stage of our lives. This book is the best motivation and inspiration. The language is very easy. But I am a little disappointed with the quality of the pages. Hope it gets better...... Except the pages everything is just perfect. Highly recommended......

Simple and meaningful as usual.

Like every other book of his, this book is just apt. It is a collection of some of his lectures. Rarely do you see someone speak such good things about everyone and see positivity everywhere. His thoughts have a child like enthusiasm. If only the world could function as he thought, it would be great. This book also gave me a list of references to further read what this great man found good to read.
