A haunting novel about an unusual family’s breakdown—set in South America during the time of Che Guevara and based on the life of Third Reich cinematographer Hans Ertl—from the literary star Jonathan Safran Foer calls, “a great writer.”

Inspired by real events, Affections is the story of the eccentric, fascinating Ertl clan, headed by the egocentric and extraordinary Hans,

Qui Ha ...more

Ingenui noi a sperarlo!

This is a stunning gem of a spare novel that delivers a punch through a turning of a phrase and the emotional intensity of the multiple narrators. I was attracted to this book by its photograph-like cover and the anticipation of reading a story set primarily in Bolivar. While the storyline is steeped in politics hovering in the background, it is the emotional turbulence of the characters as revealed by the narrators about themselves and other characters that had me intrigued as I read this this ...more

What a strange, mysterious, deeply compelling book. I highly recommend that people look up the history behind the characters on Wikipedia (even though the novel bluntly advises us that the novel "is not, nor does it attempt to be, a faithful portrait of any member of the Erlt family"). Still, though - even though if little of the history appears in the book (Nazis helping the CIA hunt down Che Guevara?!) - what a story!! The story that DOES appear in the book took a while for me to get into (I s ...more

Affections - Rodrigo Hasbún

Based on actual events, and set almost entirely in Bolivia, this is a sprawling novella, if there can be such a thing, in that it encompasses more than 30 years and attempts to tell the stories of five people’s lives during that time. In trying to take on so much, it is difficult to empathise or even be familiar with any of the characters. There is a lot of history crammed in as well.

Hans Ertl was a Nazi cameraman and although never a member of the party, fled with

Trigger warnings: mentions of torture, implications of Nazism. I think that's all?

I was hooked by the beginning of this tiny little book. It's about a German family living in Bolivia in the 1950s and 1960s, and the book begins with the father of the family leading an expedition to look for a lost city. Uh, YES.

From there, it covers the Bolivian revolution and the way that the various family members struggle with that.

And it was definitely an interesting and compelling read.

But.

It's only 160

Maybe only 2.5, but there were moments of beauty so I’ll go with 3. I’m just not quite sure what to make of this very brief, albeit pretty intense novel. I was unfamiliar with the real life Ertl family when I started reading but was intrigued enough to do a little research. Knowing the backstory made this fiction treatment much more interesting, but it still wasn’t enough. This felt unfinished, like the pitch for a really interesting story that wasn’t quite developed.

DNF. Good opening and characters, story full of potential, but the novel does not live up to it in the end. The metaphor of Nazism=looking for a mythical, ideal city is not used well and goes to waste. The metaphor of a young, relatively innocent and believing girl adoringly following her father wherever his craziness leads her like a citizen following a fanatic leader also falls flat. I don't understand why there is so many rave reviews of this book. I don't think it's very good.

I guess this is the kind of LitFic I just don’t get. I didn’t hate it, but I just basically feel like \_(ツ)_/. It probably would have been much more interesting if I had any background in the politics & wars in Bolivia, but honestly this book did not inspire me to learn more.

I listened to the audio, and perhaps it was a bad format/story match for me. The narrators are perfectly fine though.

Family dynamics and the way history and your environment effect the very nature of your being is what this somewhat short story dwells upon. We are introduced to the Ertl family who have escaped to Bolivia following World War 2 where the father, Hans, was a cameraman for the filmmaker/propagandist Leni Riefenstahl. Hans, ever the one for fantastic ideas, embarks on a search enlisting two of his daughters, for the lost city of Paitití, resulting in disastrous consequences.

Recommends it for: no one
"A spare novel". Yup, so spare that it was like an empty box. There's never a value, or value-laden sentence, about the Nazis who escaped to Bolivia. The patriarch, who had been Leni Riefenstahl's main cameraman, is drawn as a dream-filled adventurer. Swell guy. At one point in his "documentary"? he starts a huge fire, which rapidly becomes out of control but is doused by a sudden surprise downpour:

"He yelled like a man possessed, his arms stretched up to the sky. The rain was drenching his hair

First published in Spanish in 2015, Affections is the second novel by the Bolivian writer Rodrigo Hasbún (his first to be translated into English). Hasbún is something of a rising star in Latin American literature circles. In 2007 he was named as one of the Bogotá 39, the 39 most important Latin American writers under the age of 39; moreover, in 2010 he was included in Granta’s list of the twenty-two best young writers in Spanish. (Hasbún was born in 1981.) In light of this pedigree, I was keen ...more

A circular tale of a father who excelled as a film-maker in Nazi Germany escapes with his family to Bolivia where their relationships slowly fall apart. Impressionistic chapters written in each family member’s voice tell of the long-term effects on a family infected and destroyed by their involvement with radical politics, ending with one daughter dedicating her life to Che Guavera’s cause.
Haunting. True. Emotional. To the quick.

A story told in vignettes. Hans Ertl, Leni Riefenstahl's trusted cameraman, has moved into Bolivia and lives there for the exploration, while being a poor father for his three daughters Monika, Heidi and Trixi. Monika, known for killing the man who ordered Che Guevara's hands to be cut off, becomes the main character in this novel, with her activism in the Bolivian rebellion. Heidi is more conservative, while Trixi, the youngest of the three, just observes.

This is a little book, less than 150 pages. And it is a gem! The translation must be wonderful as it is so beautiful to read. "Timeless" was a word I kept saying to myself. Yet this story of a family disintegrating is very specifically THIS family--based on the true story of Hans Ertl and his family. Their story seems romanticized but it is gut-wrenchingly real. This is a local Houston author, already a winner of much praise for his writing. Indeed.
