Elemental World #2

Blood and Sand

Rate this book
Dead women are showing up in the desert east of San Diego, and no one understands why. When the story comes to the attention of reporter Natalie Ellis, she can't help but make comparisons to the tragic deaths she'd investigated years ago. Are these women the victims of a serial killer, or something even more insidious?

Bodies may be piling up in his sire's territory, but water vampire and feared enforcer, Baojia, is stuck entertaining the rich and clueless at a club in San Diego. He's taken his exile with all the grace he could muster, but his patience is starting to thin.

Sparks fly when mortal and immortal are thrown together, and Natalie comes face to face with a reality that was lurking in the corners of her life. Pursuing the truth could cost Baojia everything, including the mortal woman who has earned his grudging respect.

BLOOD AND SAND is the second novel in the expanded Elemental World series by Elizabeth Hunter, author of the best-selling Elemental Mysteries.

Ever since I discovered Elizabeth Hunter’s stunning Elemental Series I have been unable to keep myself away from devouring book after book….in fact, it’s been a non-stop reading marathon for me…..
 photo images202_zps2csadow4.jpg
I just can’t get enough of the lives and tribulations of these extraordinary and fascinating characters that grown on you, that have become like family to me. They are a mix of all cultures whose lives are filled with humor, love, family loyalty, loss, pain, and happiness….just like everyday people. You care for them

The world that the author has created is intriguing, captivating, unique, clever and totally addicted.

I have been fascinated by the mysterious and intriguing water vampire, Baojia, since he made his first appearance in The Force of Wind, the 3rd book of the Elemental Mysteries Series.
 photo danielhenney4_zpspfd1xrov.jpg
Assigned by his sire, Don Ernesto to protect his granddaughter, Beatrice De Novo and becoming her trainer and friend, he ended up being sent into exile after the disastrous happenings at the end of that book.
He’s living in San Diego, bored, running a club owned by Don Ernesto and spends his time waiting to be called back to doing what he’s good at….a warrior.

Natalie Ellis, a friend of Beatrice, is a fearless reporter is investigating the serial killings of women in the area where Baojia is living.
 photo f9d4e9084079f6a2c748b5b57cff3b42_zpsdrjdprh8.jpg

Worlds collide and their lives will never be the same again.

The chemistry between them is explosive. Sexy, passionate and a sexual tension between two stubborn people that makes you want them to succeed in finding a HEA together.

The depth of their connection is a joy to read.
“Do you realize…” she whispered. “Do you know what loving you would mean for me? For my life?”
“Yes.” He kissed her lips gently, then he whispered in her ear, “Love me anyway.”

I loved seeing the interaction between these two strong and passionate characters. And to watch Baojia finding someone to love after being alone for so many years was another thing I loved about this story. Emotionally intense.
“Give it a chance. Us. This.” He swallowed the odd lump in his throat. “Whatever it is, it’s new for me too.”

Adding to my enjoyment was the cast of the familiar and loved characters from the previous books that appear in this story.

And as usual, the humorous dialogue continues…can I ever forget the popcorn scene with Tenzin & Giovanni???
“Tenzin said, “More popcorn, my boy.”
Giovanni ripped the plastic bag open and held the paper bag. “This is ridiculous. I’m not a kitchen appliance.”

Whilst on the subject of another of my favorites in this series..yes, that would be Tenzin…
 photo Liu-Yi-Fei_zpseekwbglk.jpg

Is there something going to happen between her and Giovanni’s adopted son Ben????
He’s turning into a very interesting and gorgeous young man…
 photo KingTomb_Final-669x1024_zpsv6aqd8im.jpg
I would love to see where these two characters will go next….in fact, I quite like the idea of them together.

Oh, yes….Let me not forget to mention…yet again…how much I love Baojia…this is some hot and gorgeous water vampire…….yes, okay, I’m gushing here…but damn..this is one fabulous vamp..
 photo download201_zpsnghvufq9.jpg

This was one of my favorite books in the series….it was such a romantic love story.

I can’t wait to read more about the love and lives of these extraordinary characters….

So, if you haven’t started reading this series……I urge you to get book 1…I promise you will get hooked just like I did……..

*Applausing*

Take a bow Ms Elizabeth Hunter, because this is just fabulous! As with her writing, she knows how to set the scene and this didn't disappoint. It has great action, pace and intrigue. Not to mention the simmering love attraction and heat; that both Baojia and Natalie share is present and is constantly teasing the reader. Love that! A special bonus is seeing the characters that I've grown to love, make their appearance in this.

This is just a great series; pick it up if you can! Enjoy.

Blood and Sand by Elizabeth Hunter
(Book #2: Elemental World series)
Source: Author/ARC for a fair and honest review
Rating: 5/5 stars

One word: Ireadthisintwosittingsandcan’tcrappin’believehowdamngoodthisbookis! Seriously, that’s just one word and every bit of it is true. :) Yet again, Elizabeth Hunter comes out swinging and delivers yet another fantastic Elemental World read.

Here’s the skinny: Baojia is still stuck in San Diego continuing to serve out the “sentence” meted out by his “father” Don Ernesto Alvaraz for “allowing” Beatrice de Novo (Don Ernesto’s great grand-daughter and Gio’s wife) to be hurt. To say Baojia’s skills are being wasted doesn’t even come close and he is bored with life in oblivion. In fact, the days (or rather nights ) have gotten so mind-numbingly boring that Baojia is considering taking his life in his hands and presenting himself to Don Ernesto to ask for a reduced sentence. Lucky for Baojia, the boredom is about to be lifted and the sweet release comes in the form of a saucy and sexy little redhead by the name of Natalie Ellis.

Here’s the skinny: Natalie Ellis is a no-nonsense kind of girl with a rabid need for the truth and very little sense of self-preservation. Natalie is an investigative reporter and once she has her sights set on a story there is nothing that is going to stop her from uncovering and reporting the truth. The night she walks into Baojia’s club and starts asking questions alters the course of not only Natalie’s life but that of Baojia’s as well.

Here’s the skinny: There are girls dying in the desert at an alarming rate and no one seems to know how they died or who is leaving the victims. Typical of Natalie, she begins poking around and asking questions that will get her answers just as fast as they will get her dead. In order to protect Natalie, Baojia takes her under his personal protection and makes his way to Don Ernesto to discuss the little murder by vampire problem they seem to be having in their territory. All kinds of hell breaks loose and Baojia and Natalie find themselves in the middle of a vampire shit-storm they are hoping can be calmed before they end up dead.

As with all of Elizabeth Hunter’s books, I fell into Blood and Sand like I fall into step with my husband of fifteen years. Everything is comfortable, interesting, suspenseful, a bit naughty, and just flat-out good! Natalie is smart, funny and like a dog with a bone where her need for answers is concerned while Baojia is tall, dark, fangy, and hot and only interested in keeping the fiery redhead safe and by his side! Along with these two are some old friends including Gio and B, Dez and Matt, Carwyn and Brigid and, Ben and Tenzin. Have I mentioned how much I LOVE TENZIN??? These characters are like old friends for me and I am so glad to see how large a role they are playing in the expanded version of Hunter’s Elemental World. Furthermore, not only does Blood and Sand have its own specific plot but its plot ties into the larger series plot about Elixir and how the drug is destroying both humans and vampires. Everything comes together flawlessly for a fast-paced, can’t put this book down read!

The Bottom Line: I have no idea (nor do I care to know!) how Elizabeth Hunter works her magic but with every new book I am completely taken in and consumed by what she has written. Blood and Sand hits all the pertinent points for me: interesting short-term plot (check); the long-term plot line is advanced (check); solid, dependable, familiar and fun characters whom I love (check) and; excellent, witty and fun dialogue which carries the story (check). I know I am gushing but this is a series and author I am passionate about and highly, highly recommend this book (and every other Elemental book by Hunter) to all fans of the paranormal, mystery, suspense and romance. It’s all here for every NA+ reader.

I am a mad fan of Elizabeth Hunter’s Elemental Mysteries books, and love that she is giving us more of her world in this spin off series.

I have been an admirer of Baojia since he was introduced in the third book of the series, The Force of Wind - the mysterious water vampire who was assigned to protect Beatrice, and ended up becoming her trainer and close friend. After things fell to pieces at the end of that book, Baojia was exiled to San Diego by his sire, where he lives a frustrating and unfulfilling life waiting to be forgiven so that he can return to his job as his sire’s Enforcer and Head of Security.

And then along comes Natalie. Intrepid reporter, and feisty as all hell, she is investigating a series of murders in the Californian desert. When her College friend, Dez, suggests she contacts Baojia to help her with her investigations, she is pulled into something she never expected.

When the two of them meet, there is an instant attraction, and quiet, unassuming Baojia shows his passionate side as he experiences some pretty strong insta-lust. But things between them move at a great pace as they flirt and get to know each other as they work together to investigate the killings. But the more they start to feel for each other, and the deeper their investigations lead them, things start to get dangerous, Baojia cannot keep his true nature hidden from the Natalie, and she is introduced into a whole world she never knew existed.

Which gives us a brilliant intro to Natalie’s other College friend – Beatrice and her gorgeously hot hubby, Gio. Oh, I’ve missed these two! Tenzin and Ben, as well as Carwyn and Brigid are also along for the ride as the entire gang comes together to figure out exactly what is going on in the desert, and planning to put a stop to it. Everybody gets the opportunity to show their badass-ness, and it all ties in brilliantly with the rest of the series and leads to an epic big finish which had me madly flipping pages.

With lots of laughs, arguments, banter and action, the scenes involving everybody are just gold! But it’s very clear Baojia and Natalie’s story, and there are also some really gorgeous moments as their friends offer advice and support to the fledgling couple.

Which brings us back to the romance. Oh wow. I LOVED seeing a different side to Boajia. He’s always been so mysterious, and although we have seen glimpses of his caring side, it takes Natalie to really bring out the passion in him, and it was sensational.

“Focus. That was part of what made him so irresistible. As quiet and distant as he could be in front of others, when Baojia turned his focus on her, the intensity of it rocked her. He kissed her as if it was his mission in life.”

And Natalie is fabulous! Strong, brave and determined, she is also really sensible. I thought her reactions to everything that unfolded were completely realistic, and loved watching her intelligent, logical side battle with what her heart wanted, and the irresistible pull of Baojia.

“Do you realise…” she whispered. “Do you know what loving you would mean for me? For my life?”
“Yes.” He kissed her lips gently, then he whispered in her ear, “Love me anyway.”

Wow. Gotta love him!

I loved this book, I love the world, and I love these characters. I’m still wanting more from this series, so I hope Elizabeth carries on with it… a grown up Ben, perhaps???

Fantastic - 4.5 stars.

4.5/5
Every time I read Elizabeth's book, I know I'm in for a treat. She skillfully combines elements of paranormal romance with an action-driven, intricate urban fantasy plot. Her male characters despite their supernatural strengths don't behave like uber macho cavemen, making asses of themselves in the eyes of the women they love and want to protect, and her women are never TSTL (too stupid to live)... So I can actually relax and enjoy the book without getting riled up every 5 minutes. *grinning*

Baojia for me became one of the most intriguing male heroes of Elemental World, and I waited for his story with baited breath. He was enigmatic, sleek, ruthless and at the same time vulnerable.

Natalie is a quintessential Luis Lane, - she has guts and perseverance in pursuing the story which she believes will bring justice to murdered women. She is strong-willed, but at the same time she has a healthy dose of fear of vampires and their powers.

Those two clicked really well as a couple and their investigation served the continuation of the plot that goes through all Hunter's books - the hunt for Elixir.

I was overjoyed to see Beatrice and Gio again, and also Corwyn with his young partner Brigid, Tenzin and Ben - they made an absolutely cracking team and as usual added an elegant solution to Baojia and Natalie's problems.

I was also relieved to see that Elizabeth avoided the problem of repetition which I complained about after reading Building From Ashes. There was none of it here.

Overall, a really enjoyable, entertaining and fast-paced read. I think that far into Elizabeth Hunter's writing I shouldn't even bother to recommend this, because if you a fan of the author it will be on your automatic buy, but if you haven't read any of her books yet, you should definitely start with Hidden Fire.

DID I THINK ANYONE WOULD TOP GIO FROM THE ELEMENTAL MYSTERIES SERIES?

DID I THINK ELIZABETH HUNTER COULD OUT DO HERSELF AND MAKE ME FALL IN LOVE AGAIN?

Honestly? NO.

BUT.SHE.DID.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 incredible stars for this amazing, wonderful read!

I didn't read the first in this series about Carwyn. I didn't think I would be lured back with another story about someone other than Gio. And honestly, if I wasn't intrigued by Baojia after reading about him in Elemental Mysteries, I wouldn't have read this either. But HOT DAMN. So glad I did, because even if you're not intrigued by Baojia, then YOU WILL BE!

I wouldn't necessarily recommend this as a standalone. Better to read Elemental Mysteries first since the richness and extensive back story behind all the characters, the incredible world-building, the EVERYTHING! would not be understood as it should.

But with that said, I didn't read the first in this series and because each book deals with a different secondary character from Elemental Mysteries, I didn't have to.

This book has it all: Mystery, intrigue, betrayal, love, action, VAMPIRES! need I say more?! And the world Elizabeth Hunter has created is nothing short of extrordinary! I want to live in this world where vamps are distiniguished by their element--so cool.

And Baojia? MY GOD. He was interesting in EM but this man, this man is....

INCREDIBLE
SENSUAL
SEXY
MOUTH-WATERING

I never thought a quiet, intense disposition could make me feel the way it did. He was astounding. I never would have thought him to be capable of all he was in this book. I loved reading about him, thinking about him, dreaming about him, gheesh! I couldn't get enough and finally realized that he had replaced Gio as the MAN in this vampire world.

Thw writing was flawless like usual and if you haven't read Hunter before you should. She has a way of weaving magic into a story and is the master of a slow-building, sensual romance. Exquisite.

My favorite vamps were back including Gio, B, Carwyn, Tenzin...One big incredible happy family. It's a stunning cast and I wish I could play!

I loved this! I loved Baojia! I loved him with Natalie, and most importantly, I loved he got his HEA.
Wonderful book!

3.5 stars.

I'm so slow reviewing these days. I have no idea when I finished this one, it was some time this month. Whatever. You see, when a book really kicks me in the butt and makes me feel numb, shocked afterwards... that's when I write a review quite fast. I couldn't care less about reviewing this one. And that's not 'cause it was that bad, but 'cause I wasn't moved in the least. It was just ok.

I really liked Baojia in the previous books, especially in The Force of Wind. His and Beatrice's chemistry was as palpable and unmistakable as it was prohibited. He was coiled power, raw and misterious. I was happy to see him find his piece of happiness. What I didn't count on was that he would be boring to me, nothing of the mentioned chemistry here. And I mean NOTHING. Damn, you'd think that when he finds his true love, it would be fireworks all over. I expected to read with my sunglasses on.

What I got was that I surely had to use glasses, but it was to find that tiny spark or two Baojia and Natalie had going.

And Natalie? Holy feck, was she annoying! I just can't put her and Baojia together. I still think there's nothing for him there. I'm sorry, that probably has nothing to do with Elizabeth's choice of heroine, more with my own likes and dislikes.
Plot? There was some, yes. The story about the Elixir unravelling slowly. But there were holes. I hope that the we'll find more out in The Scarlet Deep.

Btw. my fave character of the whole series is Ben. I hope to read his story some day. Maybe as a spinoff.

Anyway, you might ask why 3.5 stars, then? As I said, I don't think the book's bad, it's quite Okay, but that's just it. I expected more than just Okay. And it's a loyalty thing, too. The book's better than some other 3-starred books I've read, I'd have to re-rate too many books...

Is it a recommended read? Yeah, it is. It is :D

First read 13th August 2013. Gave it 4*.
Reread 10.07.2015.

So I have just finished reading this book for the second time. And it just isn't good it is better than the first time. 5 "Love is never easy. Not the real kind anyway." Stars.

We met Baojia in the Elemental Mysteries books. Annnd he had a thing for B which did not make me a happy bunny. I wasn't entirely sure that Ms. Hunter was able to pull it off by making me personally like him. Well, I personally fucking adore him.

Instead of fulfilling his assignment which was protecting B. He fought Lorenzo instead. Cast in to exile by his sire Don Ernesto he has spent the last three years in San Diego. He is bored. Very bored. That is until a certain red head walks into his club and shakes up his world.

Natalie Ellis is a reporter for the Tribune in San Diego. Natalie is like a dog with a bone and persistent to say the least. She is following a story about dead women being left on the American/Mexican border. To help her Dez gives her Baojia's name.

He doesn't want to help her at first. She wants to go to Ivan and by using his amnis he tries to stop her investigating in the story.

"Trust me. I have a Feeling that if you ever remembered this, you'd be more than a Little bit pissed off."

He can't get Natalie off his mind. She is under her Aegis. Although he isn't doing the whole human thing he starts to feel something for Nat and the feelings are mutual.

Nat realises that there might have been something with B but is all soon cleared up. Nat and George (Baojia) are so good together.

"You have super strength, right?" "Shouldn't this be going faster?" He turned Frustration evident on his dark Features. He pointed to his chest. "Water vampire." Then he spread out his arms. "Desert!"

The love between them is as clear as day.

"You can die," he said again. "And you would be gone. And I would have nothing"

To help Nat he breaks free from his sire. There are always snakes within the Family.

Ms. Hunter wrote a winner for me with this book once again and it was funny and full of suspense as usual. Although Nat seriously has no self preservation skills.

We meet new characters, Tulio is a really old vampire. We see appearances of Brigid, Carwyn, Gio and B. As well as Tenzin and Ben. I feel like so a perv when it comes to Ben.

The plot of the story was once again a hit for me. The elixir is still out there and destroying humans as well as vampires.

Nat has so much to take on board and to make life altering choices. I liked the epilogue and I didn't. They move to San Francisco under the aegis of Katya. I would like to see a book with her. Also with Lucian as well.

Mild Spoilers

This book was AMAZING! I love Boajia so much! His personality might honestly be my favorite in the Elemental World. He had the best dry sarcasm and humor, and his and Natalia's banter was the most enjoyable right up there is with Carwyn and Brigid. And besides Terry, I think Boajia loves his woman more than any of the heros in this series. He also had some of the best lines🙌 and all together, I just loved him so much.

I also really liked Natalia, though she was a bit annoying at times, I liked her character overall. There was also hardly any push and pull in their relationship which was great. I also liked the more unique ending Hunter took where this couple decides to have a baby while she is human, especially because we missed that with Gio and Bea which was sad because Gio loves kids. I didn't like the open ending BUT I think there is another novella for this couple so hopefully she turns into a vampire in that one.

I loved seeing all the side characters that I have missed too. Especially Carwyn and Brigid who have the best fights and Carwyn's jokester personality compared with Brigid's more serious one. I was laughing when he kept pushing her into the pool because she was starting to "smoke". And then Tenzin and Ben appear, and this book is already made for me because I love them so freaking much. I think I've said this in every review but Tenzin is still the ultimate bada**. I also love Lucien even though we have only got snippets of him, so I'm excited for his story.

Now the only reason I gave this a 4.5 instead of a full 5, is because I am getting a little bored of the elixir storyline. Every single book in this world has been about it and I almost want to skim all over it. We hardly ever learn any new information, and it always just turns into a fight at the end. So at this point I'm only in it for the romances.

Overall, this was still a fantastic book and their romance was the best. And now onto my love Tenzin's origin novella which I'm super excited for.

"Natalie,
You are not a prisoner here, but you’re not free to go, either."

“You are lovely beyond words,” he whispered in Chinese. “For no words deserve you.”

I have cherished every book in this series, but this installment emerges as my top pick. It offers an opportunity to delve deeper into a character who has lingered on the periphery for some time. Baojia, first encountered in the Elemental Mysteries series, is part of Don Ernesto's family and serves as his chief of security. The character development is robust, and the writing is flawless—the tone and pacing are perfectly suited to the narrative being unfolded.

Banished from Los Angeles, Baojia now finds himself in San Diego. He anticipated a brief stay; however, over two years have passed, and ennui has set in. His world is upended one evening when Natalie Ellis, a journalist, enters his club. Natalie received his name from a shared acquaintance who failed to disclose his true nature. She is probing a story with consequences beyond her comprehension—women are perishing in alarming numbers, and she is determined to uncover the perpetrator and deliver justice.

For Baojia, this investigation is a welcome distraction from mundane financial scrutiny. Yet he prefers to keep the human reporter at arm's length, which may prove complicated. This chapter also reunites us with familiar faces from previous novels—Beatrice and Giovanni, Ben, Tenzin, Carwyn, Brigid, along with Desiree and Matt—all drawn into the fray and ready to assist despite not all-seeing eye to eye with Baojia. Those acquainted with the Elixir understand its continued significance within the tale.

These novels are exceptionally crafted, riveting, and sizzling with intensity! The action sequences are equally thrilling. Moreover, Dina Pearlman's narration of the audiobook splendidly animates each character, further distinguishing them as unique entities.

All of the couples in EH's Elemental series are devoted, loving, and fiercely protective....but Natalie and Boajia's felt by far the most classic of romantic storylines. I really liked these two together. Can't wait to see how they'll pop up in future reads...

ARC received courtesy of the author in exchange for a fair and honest review. Thank you!

Aah! We are back in the Elemental World of vampires, mysteries and whirlwind romances. And I think this might be my new favorite. No, really! Don’t get me wrong, I am usually pretty tough when rating and reviewing, even when I like the novels, but this one has made me happy. Perhaps it has to do with the characters or the writer’s style but in general this spinoff series and original Elemental Mysteries have a well-deserved spot on my favorites list.

This is the second installment in the expanded Elemental World series, and it is Baojia’s book. Baojia is a water vampire, previously introduced in the Elemental Mysteries franchise. Powerful and feared by his enemies, he is loyal to his sire and family, and has been doing their bidding for over a hundred years, acting as the clan’s main enforcer and protector. But ever since the events of The Force of Wind (Elemental Mysteries #3), he has been demoted in his duties and sent away to oversee his sire’s club in San Diego. Finding little use of his skills and abilities, Baojia finds his life in San Diego excruciatingly boring, until one day a curious reporter shows up at the club to question him in connection with an ongoing investigation of murders happening across the border.

Natalie Ellis, being a reporter, is determined to uncover the truth and get justice, no matter the cost. She is smart, curious, persistent, and has little to no self-preservation sense. She is also human, and is about to find herself amidst the world of vampires, and their complex politics and intrigues; whose dangerous games are far beyond what her investigative hypotheses would construe. So, naturally she is the perfect girl for Baojia, aside from the fact that she is human and very stubborn. The two set out to solve the mystery – on an adventure that would test not only their beliefs and family ties, but also spark new love.

As always, Elizabeth Hunter’s story is filled with saucy dialogue, plot twist and turns, a cast of familiar characters, and one very argumentative yet passionate couple, who aren’t too shy about public displays of affection (cue a very hot, middle of the desert type of affection).

The returning characters including Beatrice, Gio, Tenzin, Ben, Dez and Matt Kirby, Brigid and of course Carwyn, bike in tow *swoon*, are there to aid our couple find their way in this Elemental World. It feels as if an Elemental Mysteries reunion was taking place here, with old friends all present to celebrate – time to party I say!

Villainous vampires aside, the Elixir is still wreaking mayhem this side of the universe and is the grand mystery tying together this and the prior series. Luckily, the whole gang is there to save the world once again, amidst love, friendship, and all else. Perhaps, slightly sappy and predictable at times, it is nonetheless a welcome flow of events, which kept me well-entertained throughout.

So, if you are a fan of Elizabeth Hunter’s writing and have read the previous books in her Elemental universe I have no doubts that you are eagerly anticipating the release of this novel. And if you’ve never read any of these books – go on and give it a try so you can fall in love with these books and its characters as much as I had; because truly, Ms. Hunter is getting better by the book.

4.5 stars - Blood and Sand (Elemental World) which is Water Vampire Baojia's story, ending up being my favorite book of the Hunter's Elemental World books so far. Yep, I still love Carwyn but I loved Baojia even more. I was already a big Baojia fan coming into the story and loved him from his time training B in Force of the Wind - even in a supporting role he had such a presence. So, I guess that it wasn't really surprising that I was happy to get some up close and personal time with him and it was great to see a bit of the history that made him who he is now.

With his heroine, Natalie, Hunter somehow managed to walk the line and keep the headstrong and intrepid reporter from being annoyingly TSTL - which was a real trick since with Natalie the search for the 'truth' trumps self preservation (for reasons tied to her history). And the background mystery that brings the pair together and allows for us to catch up with much of the previous cast was good too.

The icing on the cake for me, though, was how much Baojia ends up loving his heroine, it isn't easy or safe since she's human, but I was so happy for him to get a HEA since his crush on B and his core of honor cost effectively cost him his place in his immortal 'family'. And I really I liked that a common PNR ploy that is typically used in a human/immortal pairing was avoided in getting him that HEA as well.

So another great installment in Hunter's Elemental World and there is enough happening in the background “Elixer” plot that I have no doubt that there is more to come. I wonder who gets to take the spotlight next.

Yeah, well.
Strong, interesting and quirky female leads are definitely not this author's strength.

This one was even worse.

And another good and interesting male main charcter wasted.

With insta-love on top.

And I am really sick and tired of this "oho, we have this dangerous vampire-drug thing going on". It wasn't interesting in Carwyn's book and in Baojia's it was just a repetition and nothing new and exciting about it. No new revelations, no new development. Just a background for the passionate, investigative, beautiful reporter (yawn...) to get involved.

And the stupidity...all around. And especially of the females. I started to hate Brigid in this book - which says something as she had a very minor role.

Seems that all modern woman are stupid, have no self-preservation and really nothing to speak for them aside from looks and tasty blood...

This story begins with us finding Baojia running a club in San Diego as a form of punishment for his failing to protect B in a previous novel. He is vastly underutilized since he was one of the more feared enforcers in this Elemental World universe.

Natalie is a reporter that seems to have a great lack of fear or self preservation, both of which will get her into numerous situations that require Baojia to extract her from with all bodily parts and fluids intact.

This is a romance novel at heart but action filled perhaps bit more than previous novels (which I enjoyed) while not ignoring the romantic aspects of this story. The appearance of many of the characters from previous Elemental novels adds to the enjoyment and adds what I would call a “comfort” level to this book since it makes it flow more into the continuous overarching storyline from previous novels, especially concerning the “elixir”.

One of the biggest subplots of this story is the relationship between Baojia and his sire Ernesto; a story which I am wondering is actually at an end or not since Ms Hunter paints us a conflicting picture of Ernesto as being a mixture of sensitive and ruthless.

Bottom Line: This may be one of the best books in the whole series, the characters are well drawn and the story while resolved leave many things open for future plots. I have to say this was pretty much a 5 Star reading experience for me.

I'm not sure it deserves a 3 but I hate to take too many stars off just because one of the characters made me wish her a painful, slow death.

Love the author, the series, and the hero. Story was interesting and moved along apace. Loved seeing the characters from other books.

But Natalie. Oh Natalie. I am not sure the last time, if ever, I have come across a 'heroine' this self-absorbed, selfish, shallow and just downright irritating. I didn't dislike her. I loathed her.

I consider it possible that the author, who is clearly a really smart and talented woman, may have invented Natalie as the way to end the series, because I do not believe for one minute that this character would ever keep her mouth shut about the 'secret world' she is now living in. Some perceived wrong to humanity will crop up and she will feel the need to destroy many lives as she "fixes things" with her I-know-best attitude.

If that is the plan, Ms Hunter, will you make her death really grisly please? TIA.

Because no normal person would want to have even a speaking acquaintance with her, it was super hard for me to accept that a true-blue good guy like Baojia, who simply doesn't deserve it, is saddled with this ignoramus of a harpy.

Good Lord she's awful.

This wasn't my favourite of the series - but not my least favourite either. The story of Baojia and Natalie is one that takes its time getting going. These two seem more suited than Carowyn and Brigid (which is my least favourite of the stories) but they're still not Bea and Gio. One of the best things about this book is the way Hunter wraps the previous characters into the story. The plot here wasn't nearly as strong; I think this whole elixir mystery is starting to wear thin. The mystery here of the disappearing and murdered women seems like just a device to further the elixir theme - even with the interesting twists to it.

Having said all that, I just can't put down a book by Elizabeth Hunter. She is one of my auto-buy, go-to authors that never ceases to entertain me. I love her stories and I love the way she tells them. It would be really difficult to disappoint me with one of her books.

This book is classic Elizabeth Hunter style it is all about family and relationships and all of her books reflect this. I especially love how her vampires are so humanized and have such distinctive personalities and special gifts. In Blood and Sand the book begins with a mystery that takes Natalie a reporter deep into a vampire world where she finds herself being protected by a sexy vampire named Baojia. Both characters are forced to spend a lot of time together and with a big family of mortals and immortals. It is in this situation that Natalie and Baojia both become attracted to each other and the idea of family that they both crave. This book is all about vampires and humans working together and forming a family unit that is not at all normal but definitely works.
This book is 5 big stars!

I'm sorry but I could not even finish this book, the heroine to me was just to stupid to live. She was a reporter not a kick ass fighter but she just keeps saying, I can take care of myself but she can't! I did not like her and I had no reason to keep reading a book when I didn't care about the people in it.

Bojai and Natalie

Loved them. It was great to see a few other characters from the previous books help them on their adventures. All I want to know know is what she will decide after she’s all healed up. (Sigh)

OK, I really, really enjoyed this the second time around (apparently, I didn't review it the first time, which I'm sad about).

Baojia has ALWAYS been one of my favourite Elementalverse vampires, and this book helps to remind me of why. Natalie has NOT always been my favourite of the Elementalverse humans, but I can forgive her more on this read than I remember doing last time.

Also, of all the books I've read up to this point, Gio annoys me the least in this one, so that's something. Plus Carwyn and Brigid were as delightful as ever, and I will never NOT want to spend time with the two of them.

And ZOMG ALL THE BENZIN FORESHADOWING IS SOOOOO GOOD. It's really clear as I reread some of the interchanges in this book that Ms Hunter knew exactly what she was going to do with Ben and Tenzin as characters right from the get-go. I don't think I really saw it the first time around, but the second time, with the benefit of hindsight after reading the Elemental Legacy books? It's all there.

All up, this is one I could happily come back to and reread multiple times just to hang out with Baojia and the Elemental fam.

I listened to the audio version, which was a treat. If one is committed to reading this schlock, receive it in the best manner you can, and that is with a fab East Coast accented narrator. She plays all the parts and her pronunciation of "vampire" was worth the nearly 12 hours of listening. Every time she said vampire, I said it too, but like her. She did say "feral" weird and her Southern accent was terrible but otherwise she was great. She managed to make Baojia the least attractive vampire ever written though. But I'm not sure if that was her narration or the writing. When Baojia would say "I want to bite you" or something similar, I inevitably rolled my eyes and thought "ewww." It's possibly the least hot vampire story I've ever read.
Anyway, I won't go into the many ways the story itself sucked, thought I'd stick with the positives.
How on earth these are so popular is beyond me. But I can't knock the author for making money if people are willing to part with it. My advice is to save it for something better.
1 star for content and 1 star for the narrator.

This is where I started to get bored with the Elemental World series so I will stop here. I may pick up the series again later, though. It's in one of my favourite genres and I already invested much time reading the series.

This was an excellent standalone in this series. I find myself coming back to this and rereading it because I am invested in the characters. Natalie is hilarious and the perfect balance to "George." I cannot wait till s
he brings us back to this couple.

Elizabeth Hunter’s second book of the Elemental World series is as exciting as the first! Actually, I think it may be better and quite possibly the best book yet. Although I have loved them all for various reasons, Baojia’s story is a little more special (I think) because his character has always been a little vague in the previous books. Blood & Sand delves into his true nature – fierce protector, loyal son, friend, and lover.

Reporter Natalie Ellis is investigating a series of murders involving young girls. She thinks it is due to a serial killer but little does she know her world is about to change drastically when she starts asking for Baojia at the club he manages. She has no idea that vampires even exist but she finds out rather quickly after inquiring for Baojia. Their worlds collide because of her nosy nature and his desire to protect her. They are inexplicably drawn to each other and when he offers her protection, she starts to understand how much he cares for her and just how serious her situation is with the opposing vampire rulers.

As always, Elizabeth Hunter weaves a wonderful story between Baojia and Natalie, as well as the repeating characters from the previous books. The dialogue is quick and witty. The banter between Baojia and Natalie is laugh out loud. I love how she continues to build the story line without losing the feel of the previous book and the books in the Elemental Mysteries series. The book doesn’t end on a cliffhanger per se, but it did leave me with a hope that we will see how Natalie and Baojia and the other characters will continue in the next book. This one is 5 stars for me!

I received an ARC of this book for an honest review.

4.5 stars - Another amazing book in the Elemental World series!

This is the 7th book I've read by Elizabeth Hunter (well, technically 6.5 because one was a novella) and they are by far some of the most well written, intense, interesting PNR worlds I've had the pleasure of reading.

The Elemental Mysteries caught my attention immediately and after finishing those 4 books, I knew I had to read the Elemental Worlds spin-off series as well. I have not been disappointed! I love the EW books that focus on different supporting characters from the original EM series, yet still involves the other characters, and story lines, from throughout the series. Just like the previous books in the series, Blood and Sand has mystery, intrigue, scenes of violence and darkness for Boajia and Natalie, but it also had many humorous moments which often lightened the mood. In the end, it's about love and devotion, between soul mates and within families. Loved this book, and its Hero/heroine. I liked where the story left them, some closure but still some options open to them in their future together.

Can't wait for the next book in this excellent series!
