How does the heart pump blood? How do our eyes see? What does the inside of a bone look like? In all its color and complexity, our body is brought to life in the pages of this ''show-and-tell'' book. The text describes how each system in our body works independently and together with other systems to make us the complex human beings that we are. Large, cutaway illustrations explain what words can't--showing in stunning detail how our body functions to help us breathe, move, reproduce, fight germs, and more. Color illustrations.
3.5 stars. My daughter (4 years old) and I liked this book. It provided more detailed information than books that we have read and enjoyed in the past, which is what we were looking for. She was not interested in all of the details, so we read what she was interested in.
This book does have a section that covers the facts of reproduction in a clear and scientific way, so I would not leave it out for a very young child to read unless you want introduce and discuss it with them.
I really like the large format of this book and the excellent illustrations. The text is easy to understand, but not very in-depth. Well, it would work for kindergarten, maybe first grade, but I feel like it's necessary to add other books to gain more information and to get more detailed illustrations.
I would rate this book higher but there's a section on reproduction with a huge picture of the male and female parts, like a whole page each. And there are a few paragraphs that discuss what happens in detail. It's very matter-of-fact and "scientific" but it's not something I'd want just laying around for the kids to read. I think that's something we discuss together.
