This was an amazing ending for the series! It was wonderfully done in only five manga; I can't wait for Kurogane to come out!

This manga was so different from the others. It was full of more violence and angst than all the others. It created an excellent climax and resolution; it was so incredibly intense.

-2018 Reading-

My previous review actually isn't far off. This last manga had an incredible climax and resolution for the Ikedaya incident and for Tetsu's revenge. I loved the cliffhanger with Suzu's sudden madness. I loved the brief display of Toshi's humanity and relationship with Okita. I was a little confused with why Susumu didn't finish his battle with the blonde ninja; that plot felt oddly unfinished. But I am eager to move on the sequel series.

Probably the strongest volume in the series to date: lots of great character moments, especially for Tetsu Okita, and Hijikata. But then again, it would be hard to have gone wrong in a volume focused on the Ikedaya affair that features swordfighting galore, slashy subtext, tragic coughing, ninja!, and someone cradling a decapitated head. (For those of you who read less manga than me, that is a time-honored manga trope that is frequently unintentionally hilarious. As it is here--just looking at the cover cracks me up.) The action scenes are very hard to follow, though; it definitely helped that I'd seen the anime adaptation. Anyway, good stuff.
