The book ended very suddenly, which I do understand since I am aware that the book was finished by Dalene's daughter since she passed away before it was finished, but I still feel like the book was a hit and miss for me. There were some great ideas and themes ( like how we have destinies, how some paths are just meant to cross, how we are all connected by invisible threads) that just weren't developed or discussed fully and had a lot of wasted potential.

Moses isn't a character I particularly lik

It's fascinating how a writer's work can have the shadow of foreboding in it. Die uitgespoeldes was the last manuscript Matthee was working on before her death and the dialogue and plot of this story reflects it. The meditative feel of the text and of looking back over a life comes very close to what Eleanor Baker did in Die ander Martha. This is not to say that the stories are the same, they just leave the reader with the same feeling of accomplishment. As if the writer managed to do what she n ...more

I really enjoyed a couple of Dalene Matthee's books, so I really wanted to enjoy this one too (especially having bought the book while touring through Knysna, South Africa). Unfortunately, it fell short of my high expectations. The story was a little bare, and some of the more interesting characters were not explored in sufficient detail. In sticking with one of her favourite themes (self identification), Dalene Matthee touched on an interesting subject, but alas, it could have been much more ex ...more

Moses Swart grows up knowing this is his name, yet as an adult he feels there is something missing, that he doesn't know his true identity. He is told that he was found having washed up on short at the location of a shipwreck. There is a sense that there is more and he battles with finding the answers vs. not wanting to know.
Not as good as the forest books, but still very good. The inside cover states this was published posthumously by her daughter. It is an interesting selection of a title. D

A soul departing. So 'n ongelooflike skrywer en storie verteller.

This book was published after the death of Dalene Mathee. Although I really enjoyed her other works, Driftwood is a bit of a disappointment. First few chapters had the makings a really good South African tale.

Dalene Matthee (nee Scott) matriculated in 1957 and went on to study music at a conservatorium in Oudtshoorn as well as at the Holy Cross Covent in Graaff-Reinet.

Before gaining fame and wide acclaim for her first "forest novel", she also wrote stories for magazines as well as two popular novels - ’n Huis vir Nadia (A House for Nadia) (1982) and Petronella van Aarde, burgemeester (Petronella van Aa
