‘A list of things that you should consider having and why you should have them.’
Ben lives in Tasmania, Australia. While working during the week as a Boiler Maker/Welder, specializing in Aluminum Welding, he also writes of a night as Freelance Writer and Author – his books to date: DIVORCE RECOVERY: GUIDE F0R PARENTS & COUPLES, LONG DISTANCE RELATIONSHIPS, BEING A MAN, and a children’s book THE DAY MY FART FOLLOWED ME HOME co-written with his wife Sam Lawrence. Ben is in a Long Distance Relationship with his wife Sam who lives in Canada, where she works as a full-time formatting professional, publisher, and author. An added bit of info found on his page that is new to this reader, ‘Ben Jackson is a University Lecturer in Modern History at Oxford University and a Fellow of University College. He is the author of Equality and the British Left (2007).’ Doesn’t sound like the Ben Jackson we know, but then he is all over the place with his talent!
For starters, some Internet luddites (self included) may not know SHTF, and since Amazon frowns on some words, we’ll leave it at S*** Hit The Fan. In Ben’s Introduction he lets us know where he is taking us: ‘We live in uncertain times; there is simply no denying it. Political upheaval around the world leading to terrorist attacks as well as civil wars and natural disasters. When you are facing the prospect of having to defend yourself and your family from threats, both foreign and domestic, it pays to be as prepared as possible. It isn’t just threats of terrorist attacks or civil disturbances; you have to consider biological attacks, environmental disasters, and even zombies! There are a lot of things that can happen and being as prepared as possible is the only way that people can face disasters. Do you want to be the person running around in the middle of an economic meltdown or environmental disaster trying to find food and water and other essential items, or do you want to be the person sitting at home ready for whatever comes your way?’
And so in Ben’s inimitable manner he provides a survival guide with instruction on what to do before the disaster hits, how to make it through, and how to cleanup afterwards. The shortest way to survey his content is a look at the chapters: Food Preparation and Food Items (Food Preserving Tools, Bottles, Rings and Pressure Canners, Food Preparation Tools, Cooking Utensils, Eating Utensils, Pots and Pans, Can Openers and Bottle Openers, MREs and Tinned Food, Bottled or Stored Water etc); Medical Supplies (Alcohol, Bleach for Prepping, Soap, First Aid Kit etc); Survival Items (Lighters, Matches, and Flints Bottled Water, Walter Filters, Water Tablets, and Water Purifiers, Batteries of All Kinds, Battery Chargers, and Solar Battery Chargers, etc); Hunting, Gathering, and Self-Defense (Defense Weapons, Guns, Rifles, Shotguns, Pistols, Crossbows or Compound Bows, Ammunition, Arrows, and Arrow Heads, Fishing Equipment, etc); and finally Miscellaneous Items (Scissors, Screws, Nails and Building Supplies, Cigarettes and Tobacco, Silver and Gold, How to Books, Camouflage Clothing and Boots)!
For those many of us who have thoroughly enjoyed Ben’s (and Sam’s) output, this book will be seen as both an earnest warning about making it through various disasters, but also it is rich in Ben’s terrific sense of humor. It is a must read/must have little book.
