This is a great read and set as fiction based on history in Japan in the 1600's.

It is interesting reading about the Christians who were persecuted and is often quite harrowing to know of such things.

The one thing that stands out with this book is that the research must have been quite extensive. The writing and the story is just superb.

The main problem with this book is that it doesn't critically engage with its subject matter. The secondary problem is that it is very poorly constructed.

In my opinion, Historical Fiction should engage with the history it explores. In the case of the early 17th century Japan that history is intertwined deeply with religious, cultural and international concerns. After watching the recent Martin Scorsese film, Silence, I found this story fascinating in that it got into other details of what went on during the struggle with Christianity in Japan. It is a good piece of history to know.

Each character encounter questions of faith, endurance and love.

This story follows characters who journey through persecution, torture and death with hope in their hearts.

This was an amazing book, although fiction based on history of the persecution of Christians by the shogun in the 1600s. Was slow going for me in the beginning real life issues but the last 2 days could barely put it down. I had to finish it. This is the first in a trilogy and look forward to the rest in the series. This book was provided to me free by NetGalley but the review and thoughts are mine.
