Pre-K-1st grade
The illustrations in this book are full of natural colors found in nature; they are placed sometimes in the negative place without a frame and sometimes within a partial frame. The text is a larger font size and there are only a few sentences per page, which would make this easy to read for a new reader. This book would appeal to kids because of the content. The ugly duckling felt awkward and out of place however he was still a good duck and actually became a beautiful swan. This teaches an important lesson that people or things are not always what they look like on the outside.
Classroom Connection:
Social- Feelings (bad and good) and how to treat other with respect and kindness regardless of personal differences.
Science- Chart differences between what a duck looks like and what a swan looks like

Our youngest brought this book home from her first grade class to practice her reading. The story is a retelling of the classic story by Hans Christian Andersen with colorful illustrations and a narrative that is good for beginning readers. The tale helps children to understand the pain of exclusion. I used this book to start a discussion with our daughter about the importance of being friendly and inclusive with all of the children at school, even if, especially if they are different. We enjoyed reading this book together.
